Accellerater pump
Accellerater pump
HI all new to forum, just joined I have problem with the accellerater pump.
It does"t seem to want to make a good steady pressurized stream when i stuff down the throttle. Result cant get the car stay running very rough idleing because the feul is just pouring into the carb at start up. This car haas been setting for 4 or 5 years and i have put a new diaphram in the pump still the same .My question there is an adustment screw but dont know if i should re adjust as it worked fine when it was parked 4 years ago.Has this ever happened to any of others or does anbody have any suggestions

It sounds like you have 2 problems. Your accelerator pump problem is probably caused by dirt in that circuit. It can be a pain to get it working perfectly again... try removing the actual accelerator pump nozzle and diaphram and using carb cleaner and pressurized air to clean all the parts and the circuit. I'm pretty sure there's a bearing sitting under the nozzle so make sure to remove it 1st. You shouldnt need to play around with the adjustment screw if it's still in the stock spot.
If fuel is continually pouring into the barrels while the fuel pump is on, you most likely have a stuck needle valve (the part that's actuated by the floats). Remove the top part of the carb and clean out your needles and make sure you floats are set to the right height/drop. This could also be causing your accel pump problems since the pump gets it's fuel from the bowls (and the amount of fuel in the bowls is controled by the floats).
Do all that, re-adjust your idle mixture and speed and you should be good to go.
