Also, for what it's worth, a combustion specialist that I've been working with claims that Ultramar has no ethanol in its gasoline.

No more 94 octane.

 

I assume it will be called petro 94 instead. Probably a good thing for us since there are more locations. I don't think they will just drop the octane level. Not so good for the independent Sunoco operator.

 

Possibly it might lead to more availability - depending on whether PetroCan has both the capacity, and the interest in providing 94. If it doesn't fit in with their marketing plans, they could just as easily dump it. From the earlier post about the Sunoco retailer's suing Suncor, it appears the current plan of the merged PetroCan-Suncor might be to just dump the Sunoco franchise, not maintain it.

 

Some of the "local to me" Petro-Can stations are selling 94 octane now, i only have 3 within 50KM of my home. You can search for them here:

Don't forget they'll be re branding some of the sunoco locations. Plus the existing petro canada locations may require additional underground tanks prior to being able to add 94 to their repertoire.

That is all assuming they want to offer 94 octane, which I hope and think they will.

 

They'll probably just continue with their "one-tank-different-pumps" approach that's worked so well for them and others for years

 

damn, in Montreal and all the surrounding all the petro-canada have 94 ... its been like that for over 15 years ...
but ive heard its not really 94,
ive talk with the owner of a Shell gas station, and he told me the shell 91 v-power is the same then petro-can 94.

Bumping this thread from the past.

I finally remember to go back to the gas station. Jim, was right they will not sell the fuel to anyone. You must have a flex vehicle that has a proper VIN.

I asked why, and the man told me it is because it can damage your car if it's not designed to use it.

I said people can modify the vehicle to use the fuel, he responded your VIN must be on the list.....

I do not understand this argument. There has to be another reason as to why they will not sell the fuel to the general public, other than it can damage your engine.....

What happens if I put diesel in a car that is suppose to use gasoline? Or the other way around? What happens when you tune your car to use 94 octane and then run **** cheap gas?

I don't get it.

Anyway the price of the E85 is the same as regular gas. It was 97 cents today.

 

I only use Sunoco 94 on my FD, my car is pretty much stock, just a few mods~

So Sunoco will all changed to Petro now eventually, so for the ones who uses Sunoco 94 before, will now change to use Petro 94 or what??

 

I went to a Sunoco that had been converted. I ended up getting their 94 after asking them 10 times are you sure its identical to the sunoco 94.

Ethanol damages the metal inside the tanks, lines and rails. It has slightly acidic qualities enough to damage the fuel system, this isn't instant but it happens after a period of time.

I also wanted to add that the other advantage to higher octane is that the flame front propagates slower, which burns all of the molecules of the fuel. In a lower octane fuel, the flame front propagates faster, so it misses some of the fuel molecules..causing multiple smaller explosions. Basically when the flame fronts collide from these small explosions it can damage components.

 

We are loosing all our Sunoco's. in Burlington. They are either being converted to either Petro Canada or Husky. They both serve 94, so I have no choice. I feel more comfortable using Petro Canada though.

 

When I first got the car it would detonate even on Sunoco 94, now that I've been driving it a while, it doesn't detonate even on 91 (I usually get 94 - but every now and then I can't find it). I don't know if that's a function of the fuel system being dirty when I got it, because it was a JDM so who knows how long it had been sitting. OR maybe the ECU's gotten used to the lower-than-JDM octane and pulled timing? I have no idea if the ECU is smart enough for that, I would think not but I don't know for sure. I should disconnect the battery sometime and try the car then see if it makes a difference.

 

I'm going to fill up at one of the local Petro Can's that offer 94 octane and get the car retuned this evening, we'll report if there is any difference in knock.

 

If you could hear audible detonation, your engine would have blown. What you were hearing was probably a misfire or something else. Japan doesn't have any special pump fuel. However, you may be able to buy race gas easier, that I wouldn't know.
