Saving and FC! ‘88 GXL (picture heavy)

I was told I should start a build thread, so here is my first car, a 1988 GXL for $400.

Some things to know is that it’s from Chicago, was there until about 2013 and made its way to Los Angeles. 113k on the odometer but it was sold again and the next owner started to rip out a lot in the engine bay, lost interest, and let it sit for like two years .

My friends and I have been doing our research on the forums and installing it all back on though

I’ve been saving to get fluids and little bits missing then I’ll see how it goes, if everything goes well she should crank and we’ll be able to do any other tests to see if anything else is missing

Any suggestions? What I want to do is get some Crown Vic 16s, a Tii spoiler, coilovers, and I want to get a special front bumper that others don’t have. I really love the RE Amemiya type I front bumper but the price is even more than what my whole car costed

welcome to the board.

i like it. that's actually my favorite OEM color. so i would really love to see it when you get it all cleaned up and functional again.

i'm not a fan of the wheels, but that's neither here nor there because you said you want to switch to the Crown Vic wheels and i really, REALLY dig those!

i'm looking forward to see your progress.

Welcome

Always glad to see another Rx7 being fixed up and enjoyed.

I also really like the Crown Vic wheels. I think our cars look great with multi-spoke or mesh style rims

Update!!
So I visited my uncle’s close friend house with lots of rotary powered cars; 2 Fbs, and 3 rx2s! When I was there he gave me a KN filter as a gift so I got that on.

I also got oil, coolant, a battery, a oil filter, brake fluid and a new upper radiator hose and I’m gonna do all that tomorrow then hand crank the car for a little then start to see how it goes!

gonna need to tighten the belt on the right, and get some of those tighteners for the new rad hose. any other tips would be really helpful, the car has been sitting for a while so would there be something specifically to look for if the car doesn’t start?

another update!
installed the clamps onto everything, did oil, coolant, battery, and looped some openings on the bottom of the radiator for automatic tranny cooling and well- my car is a manual

we tried turning the car over and it didn’t even crank or anything jacked up the car and there’s not even a starter! gonna look into buying a good starter then try turning the car on again

The AT bungs on the bottom of the radiator are for ATF are they not?

i was told they’re for auto tranny cooling from someone with a auto fc and if i just looped them it wouldn’t make a difference

They are for cooling, but typically ATF pumps through the radiator via the pump behind the torque converter so I don't think it's necessary to plug the ports on the radiator off if your using an auto radiator in a manual car.

You could try filling the radiator with water and see if any drips out of those ports.

Used an AT radiator in my MT car for awhile (came with it), if the ATF cooler ports on the radiator are left open it makes no difference.

Should coolant come out of the ATF ports, you need a radiator.

You will want to turn your airflow meter flat or it won't read correctly.

Looks like you're off to a good start, good luck!

thank you, i'll fix that when i get home

my springs are pretty bad and i'm sure they'll ride really rough so should i just save up a little to buy some lowering springs? i'm 15 so getting money is a little tough but i'm sure i could save for some semi-decent springs until i can get a job and buy some good coilovers. going to get a starter soon then if the car runs fine i'll start looking into non-necessary things such as wheels, coils, paint, tii wing, etc. i have big plans for this car once i get a steady income :goodrebuild

*side note, i hate that i titled the thread saving AND fc, i meant to put an fc lol*

sorry guys i’ve been a little busy trying to get some money for the fc! i recently designed some stickers for this little Rx7 car group my friends and i have so i slapped those on my car and onto his

ALSO! this build most likely will be going to be a kyusha inspired build. 15 in rims, wing (Tii or the RE wing), lowwww. it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but i love that style and it’s really rare to see on fcs

hey yall, back for a second till I do some more to the car. recently got a starter!!! handcranked it today and it went well and cranked with no issues, but after I put the starter I can finally start my car under its own power. I need the starter bolt('s) size, and the forum's answers aren't being exact, so any help would be appreciated

other than that I bought a Turbo II spoiler and a set of 14 in Epsilon Southern meshies!

a lil photochop of how theyd look

and little knick nacks like a computer laser disco from the 80s, https:youtu.be/f2vldovMoy8 here's a video of it for those who don't know.
also visited Eddy RENOWN RX7 shop with my friend, he just got his fc rebuilt and streetported

I know people aren't going to like that I got some 14s, but think about it this way: at least I didn't convert down to 4 lug
