S5 turbo build
Hello,
I bought two turbos from a local rotary head. i want to install one of them because i believe the currently installed turbo is blown. after sitting overnight, when looking from above, i can see a pool of oil collected in the bottom of the compressor. there's lots of smoke coming out of the tailpipe when being driven. the shaft play is very noticeable.
i started to clean the turbo on the left and i have some questions.
what do i use to clean between the compressor fins? a wire brush okay? its hard to get in there with a my fingers and a rag. carb cleaner doenst remove it all,
do i need to througly remove the orange/brown gunk on the edges of the compressor?
is it okay to use the turbine housing with that crack near the ports?
the shaft play of this turbo is a lot less noticable that the one currently installed. i want to get by with this turbo because i dont have the money right now to rebuild it at BNR. think it will be okay with light to moderate use?

You can use carburetor dip. It works great, just make sure that when you clean it off, you coat it with a light oil so it won't corrode.
The last picture depicts an S4 turbo housing by the way.
Cracks are inherent. In that spot, it's not going to affect performance because the manifold is undivided anyways.
Also, this does not qualify as a build thread.
