Yes, its already setting in with him. No countdowns yet lol, I have him learning about the basics about how the engines work and part locations to help him understand what and why we are fixing what we are.

It sounds like you've done the requisite homework and have formulated a well-reasoned plan for the car overall. Most owners remove the pre-cat in favor of a downpipe. The logic behind this is that the pre-cat is prone to spewing its guts due to heat failure. The result is that it trashes the entire exhaust system as was the case on my 1987 GXL when I bought it in 2007. My advice is to get a proper downpipe (Racing Beat is a prime choice here) and leave the pre-cat in the garage for when you need to get an emissions test.

The previous owner of my car poorly cobbled it back together with miscellaneous parts prior to my purchase. And thanks to a backfire ripping one of the mufflers entirely off, I had to redo the entire system. Went with a Racing Beat Turbo II power pulse catback and have been completely happy with it ever since. Even with the 20B-REW, it still sounds nice and quiet despite having a only straight-through resonator, a downpipe made of autozone flex pipe and the RB mufflers. My car is one hell of a sleeper

One thing I would highly, HIGHLY recommend is upgrading your alternator. S4s are notorious for alternator failure as the stock one is rated for only 70 amps and are heavily stressed from the factory. S5s were given 80 amp alternators and fare marginally better. Most owners upgrade to a FD one (100 Amps) with the proper pulley available from Mazdatrix or Racing Beat, although my personal recommendation is to go straight to your local junkyard and get an alternator out of a 92-95 3.8L Ford Taurus. They put out a massive 130 Amps from the factory and can be easily adapted to a RX7 with a pair of flat brackets with two 10mm holes spaced about 1.5" apart (center to center). The exact spacing doesn't matter too much, but you may have to adjust it to clear the stock intercooler. You'll need the same pulley from Mazdatrix/Racing Beat as one would when using a FD alternator.

Wiring is here:

The alternator upgrade would make the most sense when paired with the power/ground cable work, as it needs a 4awg output cable. Also, due to the positive battery terminal needing three cables attached (Starter, Alternator & input to underhood fuse panel), I'd highly recommend spending $4 on a pair of Marine Battery Terminals from Autozone/Walmart. They're the kind with the wing nuts on them and work really well when you need to attach multiple cables while delivering much better performance than other varieties of terminals. It's just a good, cheap upgrade that any car can benefit from. Between good, fresh cables, marine battery terminals and a Taurus alternator, I can guarantee that you'll never have charging issues again unless your battery is junk. Then I'd suggest getting a Deka Intimidator AGM battery

ok back with some updates. did a junkyard run and found some good stuff. got a reman taurus alternator works great tested it right away, picked up a villager fan this thing is huge. then i was looking under random cars for ideas on intake stuff. found a full aem cold air pipe on a 2000 something eclipse got that for $15, with the angles i can make it work for piping for the intake. ill post pictures of everything and after i clean them up and such. now i have a question for you guys. while at my local junkyard i came across an old 4 door mx6 or 626 there was no badging for the model on the back just said mazda. i opened the hood and it had a freakin 2.2 turbo from the mx-6 gt in it.... my questions are is there anything off this car that i can use on my rx7? i think it has a vented molding on the front for airflow. the car had everything still turbo, intercooler whole engine intact would be a good core if i had a car to put it in... either way just wondering if anyone has had any experiences with parts from these cars i saw the thread about it. dont know how long it will be at the yard. thanks guys ill be doing some more work on the car tomorrow so hopefully i can put up some updated pics.

IIRC, the F2 engine found in the MX-6, 626 & first generation Probe is basically a 4-cylinder version of a 13B for front-wheel drive applications. Same for its turbocharged variant, the F2-T, being analogous to a 13B Turbo of the same age.

My knowledge of it is a bit lacking aside from knowing they both use a FC clutch, NA for NA (N326), TII for Turbo (N318). As for the remainder, I'd really have to dig deeper in the catalogs. Turbo may be similar, but I'll check into it later.

There are a couple interior parts I know of that carry over, but I can't recall them at the moment. Will check when I check the turbo's info.
