My engine rebuild
Hey all. So I'm currently having my motor rebuilt and I'm getting great updates and my mechanic sent me some pics today of the state of one of my rotors and housing. There is some damage to both and he's telling me that I may want to replace them. I'd like to get some opinions by some of you guys or are far more knowledgeable than I am. Thanks.
Might want to get some rotors. The iron looks like it's just a seal that blew. Doesn't look like anything is damaged from the second pic???
Also, the housing you may want to make sure isn't scored.

Yeah my mechanic said the housing had some glazing and grooving, but he's going to see if he can wet sand it down. Hopefully the housing is ok. Both rotor pics are of one rotor, before and after he cleaned it up. The other rotor was in good condition. He's just perplexed because the rotor damage doesn't coincide with any housing damage, just doesn't make a lot of sense to him. And on top of all this, he mentioned that everything was way to easy to remove, he pulled the dowel pins out by hand. Said that never happens. Just a really strange engine. And one that can hopefully be rebuilt and be reliable.

Definitely new rotors. The housing also looks worn with quite a bit of chatter. Depends on what build you're going for and how many miles you're planning to get out of the engine. Looking at the damage on the rotors, I would speculate that the engine went through some sort of seal dislodgment. Do you know any history on the engine.

I have no clue the history of the engine. It was swapped into the car by the guy I bought it from. It's probably an ebay engine imported from Japan. So who knows the exact history, and I was too ignorant at the time I bought the car to ask. The mechanic said he can try to clean up the housing and he says the rotor can be reused, but for more normal driving and only if I wanted to reuse it. I would like to end up putting more power through the engine and obviously don't want a damaged rotor in there. I'd end having to rebuild the motor too soon in that case. Only 1 rotor is damaged, I assume it's my back rotor as that's the one that had bad compression. My front rotor was still pushing 91psi and he says it's ok. So it's only half the engine that's not healthy.
I've successfully sanded 80% the chatter out of 2 sets of housings. wrap a dowel rod with 150 grip wet sandpaper and go to town. the transparent 3m stuff from home depot is what I've used. If its a NA build, the rotor should be fine. in a turbo setup, I'd be a little more weary with high power.

It is a turbo motor. Him and myself are currently looking for rotors. I've found a couple places that sell new ones for a lot of money, and a couple guys on here that are selling used ones. Hopefully it'll work out for me. I don't want a damaged rotor put back in the engine, just not a good idea.
The combustion face isnt too much of a concern unless you are making big power with big boost (300+ HP, 15+ PSI) They may create hot spots in the crevices but more than likely they will just fill with carbon. As long as they arent dented out and look like they will contact the rotor housing I would consider using them, at stock power levels
