Micahs Build-up
As an update, I bought one of those forced air tornado type kerosene fans... I'm sure I'm asking for contamination from exhaust... but we'll see.
Not like I'll be painting WITH it on.

I have a husky sander, and a craftsman sander.. they are nowhere near the same thing.... though, that craftsman DA is pretty old.. and it just keeps working. The husky works great too... and I've beat the hell out of it.

If you burn up most of the oxygen, then the beast will be producing carbon monoxide. That is also the time that the burner, by definition, is producing incomplete combustion. That means smoke, residue, and other unburned hydrocarbons that will stick to every surface, especially your paint. Fisheyes, pinholes, you don't want to go there.
You will be better off getting several dual head halogen lights and using them to warm up the car. They will also warm the air up.
Good luck!
The kerosene heater won't be burning while the paint is curing... just for the hour or so before washing it down for paint.. to heat the surface up and get some warmth inside the booth. I doubt I'll be burning it inside after I spray. AFAIK, fisheye only happens within the first couple hours of drying when the paint is still tacky and will mix with outside contaminants.. but, I still have a lot to learn about paint, so I could be wrong.
You are right though, the kerosene heater (tested it last night) makes your clothes and EVERYTHING stink like fumes afterwards.. and I was only in there for a couple moments. Got my booth up to 80deg though, and it was like 35 outside the booth. But yeah.... hmm. maybe I'll take it back.

I envy the patience - I want to attempt my first paint job this spring, but there is no way I'd do it going into winter.
Get that thing back together so I can buy, uh I mean see, a clean black FC.

very nice work, that will be one beautiful NA for sure
You are right, the whole shunning friends for the car isnt the greatest thing, but a sense of completion is way better than social friends

Well, a little update... I took back that Kerosene thing... jackhild59 was right.. insane amounts of fumes... I tried like hell to find a cheap used gas unit heater (externally vented).. I found a 200,000 BTU natural gas one that I was gonna hook up.. but miles away from the guys house, he called me to tell me somebody just picked it up. Pissed off, I drove to home depot and picked up a 200,000 BTU propane convection heater.
I'm extremely happy with this thing. Propane fumes aren't NEARLY as horrible as the kerosene nightmare. Also, 200,000 BTUs (for anybody who doesn't know) is an insane amount of heat. It was ~35degrees when I first started this thing up and my 20Wx30Lx10H paint booth was 95degrees in about 20-25minutes WITH the ventilation fans on! The fumes are extremely tolerable even at full heat if you can stand the sweating.
I should have some good progress next weekend for you guys... <unpause>

Got the chassis re-primered... Let me say.. I'm going to write a review on the paint products I've used. I switched from House Of Kolor products for primer back to PPG... I must say.. PPG makes a GOOD primer.. Thin to spray, but builds good.. sticks well.. and flashes fast. Its also NOT MUCH more expensive than HOK stuff.. Also, I'll NEVER again use direct to metal primer over a primer-wash THEN normal primer... There's NO reason not to go the REAL way... price isn't really an issue.. nor is time.. not by much anyways.
Anyways.. onto the pics!

I also got a new toy:

My friend gave this to me for free.
Got it last friday.. rebuilt the carb, tuned it up a little.. put my FC spark plugs in (cuz i had some extras) and now it runs great! Drives okay.. has a wheel out of balance.. so I'm gonna get a new set...
I should have even more progress tomorrow!

Wow, screw black, that car looks GREAT in primer micah!
Nice progress man! I've also been thinking of just getting a first gen myself for now to have some fun with if I can't find that elusive T2 "in good condition for the right price.":

So, bad news on that front... My daily driver died, so I'm concentrating on getting one of my FB's running since they are in closer-to-working condition than the FC. I do feel terrible about putting this project off... expecially when I was so close.. but, this has to happen for now. I hate December for this reason... everything bad always happens all at once in December for me.
December is a bad month for me too..
I agree w/ you on the PPG products. IMHO - much better than HOK. My FC was all PPG for the engine bay and I plan to do the body/interior with the same. It was a little pricey, but not bad for how it turned out...
Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing this thing done!

^^ yeah... So far I've used Martin Seniour (NAPA), House Of Kolor (HOK), and PPG... So far, I like PPG the best with NAPA paints being an extremely close second. Not as high quality, but definitely an incredibly easy to use paint with no adhesion problems and great color matching... its also super cheap.
I plan to paint my FB w/ the NAPA paint in the spring - I just want a solid color car, lol - it doesnt have to be perfect.
I may have missed it earlier but what HPLV gun and compressor are you using?

I *DID* mention it.. and usually I would tell you to read the f'ing thread.. but its the holiday season, and I'm already beat into submission.. so...
60gal compressor (13.4cfm @ 90psi) with a refrigerated air dryer from harbor freight (works awesome) and a Devilbiss gun with 1.3, 1.5 and 1.8 tips. Though, 1.8 is no longer needed now that I've ditched HOK DTM.
