Nobody should use chemicals to clean an engine bay. The best engine bay cleaner is hot-hot-water... But yeah.. Powder coating would have been nice.... maybe next time. I'll have pictures and video of it the way it is now... and thats good enough for me.. atleast I'll know its mechanically sound.

By the way Micah, will you ever do a write up on how you made the booth?
I'd love to do that! also, do you live in a place where the driveway/garage is not seen very well from the street? Because my garage goes right out to the street, and I swear to GOD, that if I put something like that up in the driveway, people would bitch and the cops will come and tell me to tear it down or something. God, my town effin SUCKS!

I should take a picture of my house... lol its a sore thumb for sure. But, luckily I don't give a **** what my neighbors think or smell.
If I do a booth write-up, I'll post it in this thread. Stay subscribed.

Yeah, it's not that I actually care what my neighbors THINK, but rather, what they will do, ie: Call the cops, and bitch about it, then the cops come with an ordinance and tell me that I have to tear it down.... or pay a fine, and they will do it, plus charge me more for having to hire someone for it. My town sucks.

More like, "cant have ugly wierd unusual **** that distrupts the view of the neighborhood" You cant have a junker car sitting in you front driveway for eexample. I remember my dad would also not let me build a quarter pipe way back when I used to ride bmx, because of simmilar reasons. We had 4 cars in our driveway for a while, and dad was sweating that we might get a warning or something.. I know, it sucks. That's why i hate living here, and want to move. The only reason I'm staying with my parents is because of the University of Illinois being a good collage, and I don't have to pay rent!

Well, its just a carport... so, get a nice tasteful one... hang some flower baskets on it to hide the exhaust fans and what not. Strip the car in your garage, put the parts you are painting in the booth, and put the rest of the car under a tarp, then under a car cover.. that way it looks like you are covering up a NICE new car or a classic.. Then, when you are ready.. swap the car into the booth at night.. finish it up... reassemble.. then drive out your nice shiney new car. Then keep it under a car cover to confirm their beliefs. Hehe.
So tonight I paint stripped the doors in prep for new paint.. .tomorrow I'll finish removing scraps of thinner, sand the rest of the paint off, then slather the outsides in a thin layer of glazing putty and start sanding away until I get a nice uniform surface.
More news as it develops.

I did actually do a lot of thinking about the order in which I painted the items. I needed the garage space for doing this work... and I couldn't have a fully painted chassis just sitting there waiting to get scratched.... So, I painted all of the pieces of the car... after I finish a set, they go into my guess room of my house to dry/cure. That way, when I finish the chassis, I'll be able to assemble the car right away and park it in the booth to finish curing while I work on the engine in the garage.

Well, here's a little update... weather has stopped me from doing a lot.. it was cold as hell the last couple days... but I'm finally able to get some stuff done this weekend. I SHOULD have more pics by the end of the weekend.. cross you fingers for me.
But, since I couldn't do much outside in the booth, I did a little in the nice heated garage.
I followed THIS thread to paint my fogs... I put on a layer too much though and they came out orange-ish. The light that comes out is very yellow though, so I'm going to leave it for now.. I might sand it off and repaint with a lighter coat if I don't like it.
So far though, the paint looks to be very high quality, bonds very well, and doesn't scratch easy (I tested a little on accident). At first I thought it might be a little ghetto... but I'm rather pleased with the results.

Flying monkeys couldn't keep me from painting this weekend... I have the doors primered... still need sanding+more coats and MAYBE some filling if the guide goat shows that..but.. sat/sun I should have color/clear down..
This weather seriously sucks... its not insanely wet/cold.. but its JUST cold enough to **** me off. I got my propane heater going though.

Humidity
Hey Micaheli,
How do you deal with the humidity when you're painting? I moved from Beaverton last year and so I know it's humid there this time of year! We've been glass bead blasting parts (pressurized, not siphon) here in Austin and even though the humidity hasn't been bad if we don't use the in-line dessicant filter the water builds up and clumps the glass beads.
How are you drying your air when painting?

I have a refrigerated air dryer. Basically just cools the air to the dew point (34-35deg) and the water falls out of it, is collected, etc.. Poof. Super dry air comes out.

dude, you dont need more than 10 lbs of dry ice. if you crush it up to an almost powder then pour it over the surface, it works wonders. not a whole lot of cleanup of dry ice either that way. just alot of tapping the chunks of really cold and hard tar/deadening!
