Yeah, but going into painting for the first time.. you really don't need to know HOW to paint... just read a few docs on what NOT to do and you'll be fine. Wanked is correct... its the body work that sucks. DA sanders suck, wet sanding is messy, and glazing putty stinks.... However.... hard work aside, its actually quite fun... expecially when you take something that looked like *** in the first place and you've turned it into a near-perfect piece. Its very rewarding.

More to come hopefully this weekend. I would like to start in on the engine... we'll see what my schedule looks like.

Honestly, I must have skipped over your comment... So, I'll answer it now.

No insult taken!

I'm being serious too!
Funds? eh... most of what I've been doing I either had, or have been buying slowly... The costco shelter thing is a hand-me-down.... in the beginning, I had money for a paint job and instead of having it done, I decided to spend it on shop equipment to do it myself. In the end, I'll spend about the same, have a similar quality job (maybe better, depending), and I'll have a new air compressor, garage plumbed for compressed air, refrigerated air dryer, nice new devilbiss spray guns, a fully enclosed carport with filtered air (yay?), and a bunch of tools and capabilities I didn't have before.. let alone the experience, skills learned, and the rewarding feeling of doing something myself. Plus, this time has allowed me to work with my father... Something I've been wanting to do for years.. but never had the time or opportunity to do since I moved out of their house about 10 years ago.

Good question though. I might not be able to make gold out of dog crap, but I can polish a turd up REAL good.

I saw the reference to HOK primer, but what are you using finish? 2 stage? What brand, color etc.

Give us details!

So upon request of more information... here goes.

The paint products I have been using are:
*House of Kolor Direct Metal Primer (KD2000)
*House of Kolor Koseal II (BLACK)
*PPG Deltron 2000, color code 9813 (Mazda PZ "brilliant black")
*PPG 2002 High Solids clear

I sanded the entire car down with 180 grit on a DA... down to the metal. I didnt' want any of that crappy UC paint/primer mixture coming through and messing up my paint... so it all had to go. Once down to the metal, I begun filling any larger-than-average dips and dings with glazing putty or bondo... I have used very little so far, but have a feeling I'll be using a lot of putty on the doors. I have yet to see a set of doors without dings on them.

The HOK direct to metal primer/surfacer is THICK stuff.... it goes on like cottage cheese if you don't have the right tip on your gun. Use a 1.8 or bigger fluid tip on your gun with this stuff... Even at 10% reducer, its thick as snot. On some parts we even reduced it as far as 4:1:1... The mixing directions don't even call for reducer but say up to 10% is okay... sadly, I can't imagine NOT reducing it with anything finer than a 1.8 tip. I used a 1.8 eventually, but before I bought the NICE gun, I had a 1.4... which.... don't even try it. Once on, the stuff is great... awesome product, sands easy, fills well, but leaves a lot of tool marks and pores. Thats where the sealer comes in.

HOK KoSeal II is cool stuff actually... real thin, extremely black (although it comes in other colors to help your coverage), and covers well... The primer/sealer is pretty light in color, and the sealer goes over fast, single coat, and you can't see any primer through it. When the sealer was down, I was half tempted to just clear the car and call it done. It looked pretty good.. at this point you get excited and can't wait to get the pieces finished. It flashes really fast too, so nibs aren't much of an issue. Used a 1.5 fluid tip with this. Its not thick, but its not as thin as the final coats. A tip for this stuff... do NOT sand your sealer! I lightly de-nibbed an area on one of the headlight covers and man.... the color would NOT adhere correctly.. I had to sand it down to the primer and start over.

Deltron 2000 black... well... its pretty old stuff, been around a while now... works great.. what can I say. I put this stuff on real thick so I could wet-sand nibs out without really worrying about it... and to make the black a little deeper. Used a 1.3 tip on this.

The PPG 2002 clear was actually really fun to paint. Thin as water, goes on fast, flashes pretty quick (for a clear), and looks GREAT. I used a 1.3 tip for this as it was super thin.

Anything else anybody would like to know?

Well, I got the bumpers primered this weekend, but ran out of paints.. so I'll have to wait a couple days to get the rest done.

Since you are in the PPG family, for future reference a really nice primer is K36. It can be used as a high build primer or as a primer sealer, depending how you reduce it. Kinda pricey but very nice. I sprayed it with a 1.8 tip.

I'm just about ready for color on my 90 vert. I am using DCC Concept single stage urethane. I have a little experience with single stage door ding repair on my wife's car. It is really simple to come home pissed off over a door ding and a couple of hours later, it is gone. It's quite a bit more involved with a two stage paint.

BTW, my doors are strait. They didn't start that way, but they are now. And the fenders and trunk etc. Lots of work...

Keep us posted.

I would have used that stuff, but I wanted a metal etching primer. And HOK's Direct Metal stuff that I'm using seems like good enough stuff.. I SHOULD have gotten the K36 for the bumpers and such, but I'll deal...

See? thats what I mean.. I've never seen a set of factory painted doors that are perfectly straight.. they all have massive dings in them. Mine aren't straight now.. but they WILL be. I'll try to use as little glazing putty as possible, but I have a feeling blocking it out is going to be a bitch.

Looks fantastic so far. I really want to learn how to spray my car, I have ot many colors and to many dings to not care.

Looks great!

Is there a reason you didn't use paint stripper to remove all the old paint and crap?

Micah, I'm diggin' your paint booth. I see you have sucker fans on one end, so do you have some kind of air filtration on the other end? Are you able to keep dust levels down? Excellent work for sure.

Yeah, on the other end I have a couple higher-end heater filters taped/stapled up.. I did a test, and VERY few larger particulates are getting through. I USED to have it sucking air OUT of the booth, but that is retarded... You then have negative pressure in the booth.. when you open a door, dirty air comes rushing in... makes it a bitch to keep the dust/bugs/etc down. I flipped those things around, put the filters on the other end, put holes on the other side... that way, there's a positive pressure inside the booth.. the same way cleanrooms work.. traffic in and out of the room does not allow airborn contaminations to enter the booth.
