Thank you in advance.

Not saying they will all be like this but a buddy of mine is going through a lot of issues with a turbo he ordered on ebay for his Caliber SRT4. The first turbo the oil seals were gone on from day one. The second turbo lasted maybe 300 KMs before its seals went out again too. As of now he has taken the turbo to a shop here in Calgary and they are going to rebuild it for him with quality parts. But he money he has spent already just would have bought a T04 turbo from a quality manufacturer.

Can't say all turbos end up like this but this is what I have seen personally! Good luck with whatever route you take!

I would check out the hybrid turbo post on this forum. The cost to rebuild your stock turbocharger with the better parts is close to the same and it can actually last/not send shrapnel into your engine. And a hybrid turbo can make 300rwhp easily. This also allows the use of already proven stock exhaust manifold and downpipes already made for the car. While the stock log is not the best option in terms of performance it is a simple design that does what it is supposed to do.

Added bonus you get to see how another part of the car works and how to repair it.
Edit: The stock turbo has a lot of downfalls that a hybrid gets rid of, you can get you close to those numbers but putting a larger compressor wheel and housing can make the same and more power with lower psi.
porting the wastegate is also explained on this website and is basically needed when making a hybrid setup, This is another benefit you get for almost no cost.

there's a different brand of chinese turbo for each day of the year. whether you get lucky and get a decent manufacturer or not is all up to the dice.

the downside of hybrids is exhaust efficiency and the more you lopside the turbo along with that the more erratic the boost can be.

you can if you do not want to do it yourself, could be cheaper if you source the parts though. But bnr does make it easy find one ya like send in a core and good to go.

i didn't say that at all. hybrids are the easiest option but definitely not the better option.

there are no hybrid turbos for the RX7 on ebay(at least not usually), you have to build it yourself, have a turbo shop put it together or have Bryan at BNR build you one off a core turbo.

if you're finding something listed as working for the car with the title "hybrid turbo" it's probably not what you're thinking. some sellers are just retarded and throw up any definition they feel like, just to make a sale.

For 300rwhp i doubt if the stage1 will suffice, would spend a little more

Buy it cheap, buy it twice..

Our FD Lemon has an undivided FC manifold that fits like *** (had to notch frame) - but hey, its LeMons and we got it for cheap.

We are running an Ebay T04B. They cost $150- Shipped.

We make 330hp to the ground. Car is a half bridgeported 13B-REW with an S4 NA rotating assembly.

I had very low expectations for the turbo but so far I am very impressed! We have bought the same turbo for our LeMons FC AND a team mate is ditching his BNR hybrid and getting one.

We have had terrible luck with FC hybrids in the past. No matter what you do to the wastegate, they just suck and its a terrible bandaid in my opinion. If you go the $150 turbo route with an ebay turbo and wastegate - it can be cheaper than a hybrid as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying ebay turbos are perfect and your results may vary - but from what we have discovered, they aren't ALL that bad.

Turbo brand is Emusa.

Several ebay vendors sell them. The only real bummer is that they do not come with a v-band even though almost all the descriptions say they do.

The FC manifold is just some thing I got from a craigslist motor I picked up. It looks like a copy of a log manifold -only made out of tubing.

If I was gonna buy a manifold for an FC with an ebay turbo, I would get a cheap divided tubular manifold with a T4 footprint. The turbo is pretty small so I wouldn't worry too much about it cracking the manifold.

If you're really on a budget, don't even worry if the manifold is divided. The one on the Lemon isn't.

One more thing. What really impresses me about the ebay turbo on the FD:

^^^ That is an exhaust sleeve that melted and grenaded. The pieces went through the turbo. Even though this happened, we raced an entire day on a damaged turbo (figure about 6 hours) and it held together. In fact, we set the fastest lap of the entire race on a damaged turbo.

When the turbo was disassembled and we found the sleeve pieces wedged in the turbine housing... the blades were chipped - but still no noticeable shaft play or oil leakage. I'd call that success.

Wow! Glad I bought one of those EMUSA turbos. Cost me $170 shipped. Haven't installed it yet.

How did you deal with the lack of a v-band?

Weld them on! They can be had for cheap on ebay.

Tack the v-band in place
Heat up the cast (charcoal grill works good)
Gas weld into position

i have tons of issues with boost drop off at higher RPMs on the hybrid stock turbos, messing with helper springs and aftermarket wastegates is just a pain in the ***.

My problem with hybrid turbos is finding a good used core to rebuild. Sometimes its not just a matter of replacing seals. I'm looking into a full upgrade
