FL complete car swap/ rebuild

I have two Rx-7's in my Dad's back yard. One runs, well kind-of limps really, the other is a shell with an unknown tranny. I've not gotten around to checking the serial number or if it even works.

The one that runs is a 1988 Tii, the shell is claimed to be a 1987 Tii as well.

My goal is to make the shell into a drifter/daily driver with the engine and all the other little corks from the '88. (the '88 is rusted to hell and back then to hell again + I accidentally deleted the title.)

After cleaning the 88' so it didn't smoke up the whole neighborhood anymore I replaced the starter and upgraded the alternator. Now, the salve and/or master cylinder is out and this is where the fun begins!

'87
Today I've stripped down the red interior pieces all the way to the dashboard. I plan on reupholstering my first pair of seats and I was wondering what color/fabric I should use. (I do plan on selling them for some money for this project.) I'm decent at sewing and have patience... a lot of it.

'88
Started up, a little bit of white smoke sputtered out. Now there's a grinding/ squeaking/ nails-on-chalk-board sound coming from my power steering pulley (the cluster of three pulleys just to the right on the engine) that wasn't there a while back when it was my DD. I know I need a rebuild it smokes and has 142,xxx miles and reading around stated the Tii's last 125,000 ~ 172,000 with few exceptions.

Me
I'm completely new to the car-scene but, My Boyfriend, Justin, and his father , Steve, have worked on cars pretty much there whole life. So, I have a little guidance but, they don't know jack about rotarys. I read a lot and love to learn. I've watched Aaron's rebuild video and looked through the Haynes manual one or two times ;p. I'm always reading threads in the archives as well.

I don't have any pics yet.

As stated previously I plan on taking everything out of the '88 and putting it into the '87.

I was originally going to let the project span out over two~three years in my fathers back yard. Now I want to drive it around again and eventually get all the parts I need.

So I was thinking about getting the engine rebuilt or rebuilding it my self... a little hesitant considering I don't want to **** up. But, on the other hand I'm really throughout and I have all you guys to help if I run into a predicaments.

I know I need new brakes and an engine to get her up an running.

In order this is what I was going to do:

Strip down the '87 to bare bones. (btw the interior is maroon and if you want anything I'll sell it)

Take out the engine and either rebuild or get it rebuilt.

Inspect the transmission (nothing should be wrong but... while it's out might as well.) Upgrade the flywheel and change the clutch and pressure plate to the Exedy stage 1 HD from Racing Beat.

I picked up some low mileage stock struts and springs to get me by 'til I can get either tein coilovers or kyb agx + coilsprings also from Racing Beat

upgrade the brakes to...? (Haven't looked into a lot of options. I do plan on drifting though. suggestions?)

Drive it around with the new engine and upgraded transmission.

Save up for the roll cage & suspension.

Get a new cat back.

And any other odds and ends I might need.

Suggestions, comments, concerns? All feed back is welcome (:

Thanks, Charlana

Ignore that... this isn't the lounge. Stay out of that section of the forum

Anyway... how long have the cars been sitting?

The goal is to get it running, and running well. Then you should upgrade.

Good luck

I'll take your word on that. I get a lot of crud about it anyways.

the '88 has been sitting for 5~6 months but, I start it up when ever I get a chance (roughly 1~2 weeks) the slave cylinder is out and why it's down in the first place.

I'm heading over to my dads again Thanksgiving to get pics and take apart the dash on the '87.
