I do have one in the car. Originally it was just the main hoop.
Since then custom triangulated doorbars have been added along with reinforcing the top bracket plus diagonal bracing of the main hoop and a harness bar for each seat. Of course it was all chromoly tubing, TIG welded and still allows for normal operation of the top.

I do run the Tein Flexes but have the manual version. I don't think they offered the electronic stuff when I bought mine. The last thing my car needs is more damn wiring. It is still easy to adjust as I just figured out where to put a small hole in the cover directly above the shock so I can stick in the allan wrench to turn the adjustment ****.
The hardest part is getting out of the car

I think the newer Tein Flexes have a stiffer spring rate than mine. Do you know what it is...in lbs/inches?
Dave, did you notice any difference in the ride when you put just the main hoop in? Or did you really start to notice when you put in the doorbars, top bracket reinforcement and harness bars? I've been thinking about doing a similar setup to yours using the Kirk bar as a starting point or putting in a full custom cage. Got any pics of the doorbars? How tight of a squeeze is it getting in and out with your setup?

Tein Flex spring rates:
http://www.tein.com/flexdamp.html

How do you like the tein flex setup in your vert? How does it do on the street?

I did not notice any difference in ride/handling quality after putting in the roll bar since I did too many other things at the same time, one of which was swapping over to coilovers.
After modifying and adding to the main hoop, I did notice less flexing of the car, particularly with the top down.

Getting in and out of the car is almost as easy as it was to begin with. The only real difference is having to rotate my foot to fit it between the door bar and steering wheel upon entering and exiting the car. Once inside though, you don't even notive the bars are there. Rearview mirror visibility has been compromised though by the diagonal brace.

The Tein Flex coilovers are a great compromise setup. You will be happy with them.
On the full soft setting (or thereabouts) it is pretty comfortable getting around town, even in a pothole riddled City like San Francisco. Still a bit harsher than some basic Eibachs though.
I also track the car and on the full stiff setting (or thereabouts), the suspension works well but the overall spring rate could be higher. I've driven around in some of my old fc's with ridiculously stiff suspension. 400-500 lb front springs and 300-400 lb springs in the rear. They were great on the track but were murder to drive around this City and I promised myself not to do that again.

btw, the new Tein Flexes show the same spring rates as mine.

Pics of the added bracing:

Dave, thanks for all the pics and info. I like those door bars, lots more room to get in and out than the average straight door bars. Do you have any issues putting the top up with that harness bar? It looks to be a really tight fit right there. Where did you get those seats?

I figured the Flex coilovers would be decent on the street close to the full soft setting. Around here in Chicago we have some shitty roads from the snow\salt\plowing in the winter. The highways are usually pretty good though. With the EDFC I will have a highway stiff setting and a street setting near the soft side of the settings which I will switch back and forth with on the fly.

Top still functions normally. There is only about 5 mm of clearance between the harness bar and targa top when folding up or down.
Seats were ordered from Corksport.

*update*
First off, I apologize for the terrible pics. I put batteries in my nice digi cam and it turned out the batteries were dead... some ******* in my house decided it would be funny to put dead batteries in the battery drawer.... I did however have my cell phone when I stopped by A-spec today, but its not a very good camera on this phone. So anyway, here we go.

All the suspension work is done, Tein flex, bushing kit, DTSS eliminators, Mazdatrix adjustable rear camber links. As the car sits right now the hieght of the coilovers has NOT been adjusted to tein reccomended spec. They are set at whatever they were at when they were shipped.

Unadjusted rear, really low stance. I honestly kinda like it this way but its just too low I think. We'll see how they look at the recomended specs, and go from there.

Front view, not as low in the front right now. But the front isn't fully loaded bumper is off, UIM, TB, IC piping etc. not in so is would probably be slightly lower with all that stuff in. But once again not adjusted yet. Behind my car you can see Sean's beast up on a lift, gonna be one sick ride when its done too.

EDFC motors are installed on the dampener adjusters. Now heres something odd about these. This is the EDFC kit for the FC, however the motor boxes don't clear the hood. They stick up about 1/2 an inch, but the part thats sticks up is just the soft rubber that protects the motors. So the hood will close with them the way they are but its a bit snug. I'm not sure if this could end up being a problem but it seems to be ok. Soon I will be getting a lighter hood so this may end up just being a non issue. I'll get some more detailed profile pics of this with my better camera when I go back to A-Spec tommorow afternoon.

Oh boy, Whats that in the bottom rigth corner of that^ pic?!

OK, now what I'm sure most of you guys have been waiting for! The GT500R Turbo! Now, I gotta mention that this is NOT final. This is a mock up with a standard 500R compressor cover. My final turbo will have an anti-surge compressor cover(polished) and a ceramic coated exhaust side.

The orientation of the compressor cover will also be pointing the outlet down, like so:

^bad pic I know.

I'll re-update the thread tommorow night with some High resolution quality pictures from my digital camera after I hit up A-spec again. What do you guys think?

OK, I dropped by A-spec again yesterday to snap a couple more pics with a better camera. Unfortunatley, for the first couple pics I had the camera in the wrong mode so they turned out like ***.

Also, I realized that there is no problem with the EDFC motor boxes. The spot where they protrude in a non issue. There is a space in the skeleton of the hood where the motors have plenty of room. If they touch anything its the padding on the underside of the hood that sags down due to old age.

EDFC motor profile pic: Here you can see the little rubber corner that looks like it could have been an issue. Sorry for the blurry pic, it didn't look blurry on the screen on the camera after I took the pic. I gotta cut back on the caffeine.

Better pic of EDFC motor mounting:

The turbo has been removed, the exhaust housing has been sent out for coating and an antisurge compressor cover is on its way. But heres a pic of another turbo.

Oh I will. Question is when the hell it will be done. The body kit should be here Oct\Nov then its on to the body shop for that and repainting. Probably before that I gotta figure out what to do for a rollcage\bar with harnesses and seats. I may slow down on the work on this car too, since I just picked up a 20b and an FD shell... Gonna be hard to decide which one I want to get done first.

*edit*
Oh yeah, forgot to mention the work wheels that will cost an arm and a leg and take a while to be made.

*Update*

Just a quick update. The exhaust housing has come back from coating and the antisurge compressor cover has arrived. I snapped some quick pics. The Microtech wiring has begun! Then its on to the boost controller which will have a nice mounting location.

Turbo ****:

Stock MAP sensor and FCD pictured below have been removed since they are now useless.

Look at that beautiful coated snail! So clean and sexy!

Full engine bay shot as it sits. The black high temp ceramic coated manifold have an almost stockish look in the bay of a black car. Until you see the big turbo siting on top of the it.

AAHHHHH! I can almost feel the boost!

It will be up and running soon! Next week the fuel system is going in and the microtech should be in too! Had to get a new rail for the 850 primary injectors that showed up last week. I also decided I'm not gonna use my HKS SSQV in the car. I'm instead gonna go with a 50mm Tial BOV.

I'm so lazy, I been meaning to update this. I got lots of pics, but they are all at home, they will be posted soon.

Just a quick little teaser update with a pic.

The car is pretty much done, been done for a while actually. The car has yet to be Dyno tuned. Due to the cold weather here as of late A-spec has not been able to run their dyno much, can't get it up to operating temps.

We took the car out for a little test drive about a week before Xmas. The Tein Flex suspension was amazing. We couldn't do any boosting due to no tune and my brakes that are like jello due to a bad MC. The car has an amazing ammount of grip. The turbo did want to hit boost pretty easy. We dipped into 1-2psi with no effort at all.

Now one thing I gotta mention, there was a small fitment issue with my turbo kit specifically because the car is a vert. The issue was with the crossmember under the vert for extra bracing. It is right where the wastegate was supposed to go. So we removed the brace. Sean has since made me a custom brace that works around this issue. The little test drive we did was WITHOUT a brace there. I completely forgot it wasn't there until later. The interesting thing is that I could detect no extra flexing as a result of removing it. However, we weren't driving the car hard at all not even boosting at all, so under more severe conditions it may flex.

Alot has been done to this car now, its amazing. My jello brakes have been fixed with a 929 Master Cylinder + s5 TII Brake booster swap. The battery has been re-relocated to behind the driver seat. The boost controller is installed and functioning. I think I got some pics of that, the i-Color is a really cool little toy. I'll even be using it as an Oil temp guage. This week my new headlights are going in. The car is shaping up to be real nice.

Ok now for the pic. I had an idea to try to keep things looking stockish after seeing how the black ceramic coating on the turbo manifold/snail/DP had an almost stocklike appearance. Since my car and engine bay are black and will be staying that way I decided to try something interesting with some of the IC piping on the cold side to match the Bov. Check it out, what do you guys think?

Black Tial 50mm Bov and black ceramic coating on that IC pipe.

Yep, thats snow on my fender and headlight cover.

Oh, you might notice the black box to the left of the IC piping and the LS1 coils. Its a Crane HI6-di2 Ignition box. Why is this weird? Well I have the microtech X4 ignition module already. This should give even more of an ignition boost for the leading plugs. I can get a second box for the trailing later down the line. I believe this may be one of the only X4 + Crane HI6-di2 setups on this forum. We'll see how it does. Once it gets a little warmer we'll see. Also, near the top right of the pic you can see the new 929 MC.

More pics soon to come...
