CA Bought a TII Hood..Need Input

Hey Guys,

I bought a TII hood for my FC but it is grey. I want to paint it at home but I want it to look nice and shinny. The color that I am thinking of painting is black. I figure it will look really good because I have tinted windows all around. What steps do I need to take to make this happen and what paint should I use? OR Should I leave it this color?

if you clear it you can. spray paint will be so thin that you will probably burn through. im sure a pro shop could paint it for well under 200$ though.

Yea, they wanted $175 to do it but I figure if I ever want to learn the best way is to try it..if I screw up big time then I will take it to them.

I did this with 6 coats of rustoleum rolled on, using this link. i did not use the same compounds only the one in my picture below.

I've also used the spray on rustoleum. 3 coats heavy, wait a week, and wet sand with 1000, and 2000 thoroughly to remove orange peel. it's probably best to got higher like 3000. then using the same stuff as in the picture buff like a mother. if you do it by hand it will take forever. it takes time to get all the fine scratches from 2000.

results were the same, looks like glass.

* i guess the pick doesn't show the compound to well, but it's Mcquiars ultimate, got it from wal-mart.

Looks amazing... I will try it on and let you know.. So if I am going to use rustoleum spray I should follow these directions..

1. Wet Sand with 500 (not to bare metal)
2. Spray primer?
3. spray 3 coats of paint
4. Wait a week
5. Sand with 1000 and 2000
6. Buff with the stuff in the picture

did i get it right?

I like the look of the TII hood. I would like to get one for my car. Need to get it running first though. The hood doesn't look bad the color that it is. DIY projects are always fun though. Good luck with painting it. Hope it comes out nice. Post up a picture when you're done.

Gloss black is just about the most unforgiving color to paint.

Every- and I mean every- flaw in the surface will telegraph through and be accentuated by the dark color and the hood you thought looked great in primer will look like *** in black.

Like any major mod project, you should consider the implications of failure before beginning. If "A" doesn't work, what's Plan B?

Thanks bro..I was in the market for an aluminum hood but this on was for sale for $80 so I thought it would be a nice investment. I still might get the aluminum hood and sell the TII hood but to be honest with you, it is growing on me lol

I think for now I am going to leave it as it is. I noticed that the grey color goes great with my rims.

Plan "B" would be to sand it down and primer it again. When I paint the car I plan on putting the original hood on it for the paint job. I might as them to paint this hood as well so I can change it up whenever I get want to change things up.
