Fall 2020 update

this has been long over due but I have another update for anyone who is interested, on the last episode i was stuck on wiring and was trying to get the the powerfc working. i tried to contact a few people and pick their brains on the issue and the only place that was any help was any help was banzia (thank you). however, with that help i still did not get the powerfc working due to me cutting away too much of the stock harness. i then proceeded to look for a different option and after weeks of research and budget constraints i went with an adaptronic 420 i picked up on the market place. the unit was never installed and came with flying leads harness, which at the time i didnt know how to get going or even where to start. again the internet is my best friend and i decided i would not tackle this task as it was out of my realm. this is where the fun began for me. it is september and i ask my engine builder if he could do it for me and give me a quote, but he was to busy with other work to get to it in a timely manner or in the time i wanted it done (im very impatient). i then contact some other shops so i can pay for it and just have it done right and professionally. anyone looking to get this done expect to on $1k+ for just the a basic setup and add a few hundred if you want AC and other factory options. all the shops quoted me 2 months to get it done and that was not how long i wanted to wait, so i kept searching. i came across a shop that was in driving distance from me, we exchanged emails and i was quoted lets say 2 weeks to get my harness done with basic sensor connectors to only control the engine and fan. i then take my harness to the shop to drop it off, however the person i was emailing was not there and one of the workers took it and said he would let him know i left it. one week goes by and no email, no call, no update at all so i decide to call. turns out he had no idea i dropped it off, but he said he would have it done the next week and i am ok with that as long as it gets done. the next week comes and i ask when would be a good day to pick up the harness? "sorry bro, seven stock is this week and i have been busy". understandable, its a huge day in the rotary community so i let that slide and wait an other week. the next week i get an email saying they ran out of connectors but were order and should be in that weekend, that is ok with me. another week goes by and i ask when can i pick it up and i am told it is being worked on right now and should be done the coming weekend. it is now october and i am over getting the run around, i send an email stating i will be coming to retrieve the harness and will pay for whatever work had been done. i was then told that they never got to the harness and its here to pick up. a wasted month and an unprofessional shop had made me realize again that i would have to figure it out myself.
back at ground zero i searched the net for the connectors, loom and heat shrink to get the job done right. after about 2 weeks i had everything i needed except the understanding of putting it all together, back to the internet i go. after hours of reading and finding dead threads i came across some diagrams and instructions on what i needed and didnt need, but i still did not know what i was doing. i felt defeated and unmotivated to work on the car or even ask for help at this point, so i worked through the holidays and picked up some extra parts with the money i saved. January comes around and i decide to get back to it and i find a friend of mine that helped me complete my harness and its done in about 10 hours total. guys dont be afraid to take on this job, it actually not that hard. give the ecu a power source, combine all the ground to 2 points (chassis and engine) give the injectors power in a nutshell and boom, you have a harness.
i install the harness check ecu and make sure everything has a signal (crossed a CAS wire) and moved on to starting it up for the first time. of course i was going to have a hard time getting it going, this car has fought me every step of the way. got a base map from adaptronics website and set all the options to what specified for rotary engines (shout out for adaptronics customer service). still couldnt get it to fire and again i felt defeated and wanted to take it to a shop to get it going, so i contacted another shop near me and i got the run around SMH. i think its just me who cant get help and i never came off rude or aggressive, i just wanted my car to work. it is now the end of February and i learned that rotaries start by igniting fuel left behind and not being put in, so i use this to knowledge to get the motor to start by manipulating the fuel cut and i finally get it to fire after a few dead batteries haha.
i had a friend of mine come help and be a second set of eyes, which worked because we found a few vac leaks, got the fuel pressure right and got the timing pretty close to where it needed to be. drove the car up the street, but it wasnt happy at all. now it was time to move on to the next issue, tuning! which was not something i was going to mess with at all. i was referred to a tuner Daniel from garage life and he made house calls which was great, he came out a few days got a break in tune setup because the base map i got was not the right one in the slightest. ran that for a few hundred miles and got it street tuned in april so i could finally enjoy the car like it wanted to. i have to say, its one of the funnest cars i have ever driven. since then, nothing much has changed other than adding a radio, speaker, harness bar and air ducting i made from plastic. the car does need a surge tank because left turns and low fuel levels dont make a happy rx7.
