my cousins j30 infiiti runs this motor and its a dog! i recently did about 2K worth of work on the damn thing and it still runs like ***. Timing, belt, tensioner, water pump, injectors,ecu, intake gasket, the list goes on and on.
I think he needs a new mechanic

im not a magician, hes the one who bought a junkyard motor. and thinks i went to Hogwarts.

considering the labor was free and i got a shop discount parts for 1/2 off. im a pretty decent mechanic lol

not hating on your idea at all, but the sentiment of 'this is cheaper and easier' is just false.

rotaries are the simplest engines in the world. and unless you're building a lemons style car, you will blow through your budget. no doubt, or you just aren't keeping honest records.

just_startn beat me to the cam answer, lol...but he's right.

cfamily...the redline is actually the same, as stated...later years are different since Nissan started introducing separate truck/suv motors.

Rotor_venom...as you said, to each his own. just_startn is right again though, probably not doing something right with it. These motors are easy as hell to work on and even easier to maintain. Like I said, mine has just shy of 200k and it runs like a champ. Never burnt oil, never leaked any fluids, no valve tap (which is rare for basically any Nissan motor)...never gave me ANY issues and its all due to proper maintenance and care.

As for the 12a, neither rotor housing is holding compression...the one time I got it to actually run...it was running like ***, made a loud POP, blew a 4ft flame from the exhaust and another smaller flame from inside the carb. After that, it never held compression again.

And again, everyone keeps saying, "You're going to spend too much on fab/custom work blah blah". I say again, my buddy is a fab guy...he makes his own mounts, does his own metal work, the list goes on. The only thing (Other then stock Z parts) I'll have to buy is that fuel cell and pay someone to balance the driveshaft after Casey welds it. I would spend around the same amount either buying another rotary or paying for a rebuild kit for the 12a.

Oh...and fender mirrors come when I start doing the body work! lol Once I get it running, I have plans for the body!

have you ever done a large overhaul or project on a car. because you sound like someone who hasn't the way you talk about money.

again, i don't question your intent or the swap. you just sound unrealistic.

I'm not going to knock you for your swap, its your car to do with what you want, however, as somebody that has restored/customized/hot rodded cars for almost 3 decades now and has "friends" that do tons of "free" or "almost free" work, when you are dealing with a swap like you talk of doing, you will come to a point where you are either forced to spend a wad of money or junk the car. Theres only so much "fab" work in doing the swap. You are going to have to make suspension mods,driveline mods, electronic mods, and mods to stuff you havent even thought of yet. From experience, you can take your "budget" whatever that might be and double it or triple it to get the job completed and have a decent car. its not that the swap isnt possible, or that the rotary gods are going to strike you down for doing it, but I am going to tell you right now, if this is your first venture into something like this, its not as simple as it looks. Fitment issues and electronics can be a nightmare, and they have to be "right" or you cant get it working. Or end up with a pile of junk that "almost" works, nobody wants, and you wasted whatever you spent time and money wise. And I have been involved in some off the wall swaps...try a bigblock chevy in an Anglia....But, even seemingly "simple" conversions can cost a chunk to do correctly and be roadworthy. All I am saying is be careful, and be sure this is the route you want to go....might be cheaper to sell or swap the RX for a car more readily able to handle such a swap if you are determined to use that motor. You also might need to look long and hard in the mirror and make sure you are up to the task to get the swap done correctly and safely. You have to drive the car on the road, and I would hate for somebody else to pay for your inexperience when you hit them because the car wasnt built properly....the same goes for anybody doing any such swap in any chassis. You bear the responsibility of insuring that the car is roadworthy and safe. Simple stuff, such as, with this new motor are my brakes sized and balanced properly to stop it? Will the suspension handle a higher center of gravity, a different weight balance point, and more weight and still take corners properly? Serious stuff here you have to address...cars nowadays arent near as simple as when I started doing this stuff....good luck to ya, but be careful and thorough with it as you proceed...

I appreciate everyone's input, sorry its been a while since I've been back. School started up again and the weather hasn't quite been on my side...we've had a few random freak hail storms, 3 tornados and some ridiculous rain and floods lately...fuuuuu!!

Weather looks like its finally clearing up for a while, so I'm getting back to work asap.

Now, as far as my "inexperience" goes...I've done plenty of builds of my own and for other people...I'm not some noob that has no idea what he's doing. 83Limited, this is mainly for you. I guess you haven't read everything I've put so you're just addressing certain things you've read, which might make you think I don't know what I'm doing. 1) the car WILL NOT be driven on the street...its a TRACK car. I've taken the brakes and suspension into consideration...hence the mods I listed I'm going to be doing. The VG doesn't weight 1000lbs, its reasonably light for the size it is. People cram V8's in these cars all day long and they don't have nearly as many issues as you say I'm going to have (Yes, I know they run into problems as well...but you're making it sound like all hell is going to break loose if I go on with this), and I've followed enough of them. As for the electronics, I also stated what I'll be doing...I don't need to say it again. Just read my posts throughout and you'll understand.

I'm not saying I know everything, cause I don't and I'm always willing to learn something new. I just prefer someone to show me or explain it to me rather then tell me I don't know what I'm doing and scoffing at my ideas. I've worked out my budget, I know what parts I need...regardless of what you may think, a good bit of planning did go into whether or not this would work.

I'm not getting mad or hating here...just saying. So, with that said...back on topic please!

I'm heading back home to NOLA this coming weekend but I plan on heading out to work on the car weekend after that.

i understand why you are doing it and i think it could be done but i would of tried to sell or trade the pathy for a different motor to put in it. i am a big nissan man also but those motors are bad. there really is no aftermarket support cast iron block single overhead cam. i wish you all the luck and hope it turns out great

Wasnt trying to "hate" on ya, sorry if it came across as such. Was just trying to give ya a reality check if you hadnt thought the project thru. If you have, more power to ya, I hope it turns out well for you. Its just i have seen many cars end up as junk because of mods gone wrong....its easy to get in way over your head with some of these, and usually they end up as one of 2 things, a money pit or crusher fodder, would hate to see your work (or car) go to waste. Sounds like you have it all planned out (a good thing), however, so good luck with your project. If I can ever be of any help, feel free to shout, be glad to help if I can.

i was just randomly browsing and i was like a VG 30E motor going into an rx7 no ****
well i recently picked up a 1988 300zx and rebuilding that with a buddy
so far the engine has been easy, and easy to source parts for
now im a big supporter to wihat you have works...lol
and i wanna say good gas milage which is a plus no matter what.....rotaryies burn way to much gas and oil heh comes with rx7
this should be pretty cool when your done no doubt. ever think about cutting the hood for the proper fittment?
also this might be a totally random question but i need help on what size motorcycle would be ideal for me- saw that you bought the streetfighter -
ill be following this build
