father/sons restoration

i posted a few weeks ago. my sons brought me home an 84 GS project. Motor and tranny out, motor in its individual parts. I have outsourced some good used rotor housings from a forum member and have gotten a new rotor. the plan is to rebuild the motor over the winter here in michigan. My question is should i tear the transmission down and pull out all the parts? the car was running until the previous owner blew an apex seal which destoryed the rotor housing. why he pulled out the transmission i dont know. just looking for some insight as to weather or not i should rip the transmission down to the gears.

Other then replacing the front trans seal, I wouldn't worry about the trans yet.

Also are 12a rotors front or rear specific? I bought a good used rotor but forgot to check if I needed the front or rear.

Today I cleaned the flywheel, clutch plate and one rotor. How do they look

Flywheel was all rusty.

Rotor is in pretty decent shape

Got most of the carbon off, need to hit it with a scrub pad and some simple green

Clutch plate might need replacing
have some more cleaning to do.on it

There are letters stamped in the well of each rotor. 83-85 will have "F" for front and "R" for rear along with an "N". All other 12A rotors will only have the "F" and "R".

You really want to rotors to be close in weight. Not sure of the tolerance right of hand.

This thread might help: https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generati...ights-1058848/

And this: https://mazdatrix.com/rotor-weight-a...ression-chart/

It means it's from a 1983-1985 - https://mazdatrix.com/product/rotor-nla-83-85-frnt/

My first instinct has NA (Normally Aspirated) because the turbo has TF and TR. The US never got a first gen turbo.

Those cutouts are for a large bridge port or j-port.

The 3M double sided trim tape works good. If I remember correctly, the trim has a small cutout on the back middle. The drives rear side molding is the most common piece to come off because of spilling gas during fill-ups.

Since the car already doesn't have the rats nest, you can delete the air pump (if not already removed), the ACV on the intake manifold and replace with a block off plate. You would then need to use some 20mm freeze plugs in the irons to plug the water passages and also block off the fresh air pipe on the rear of the intake to cat. The only downside would be that in the winter, the carb won't come up to heat fast. If using this car as a daily driver in cold climates like Michigan, that could be an issue. With these mods, you can remove the cat. Never run a cat if the air pump is removed. It will burn out. You'll need to piece together an exhaust. It will be loader. Also, use a qualify stainless muffler and silencer.

I'm not sure of Michigan has exhaust inspections.

bolts

the previous owner tore down the 12A . have all the parts except most of the bolts. we have the engine bolts to hold it together but we are missing the bolts for the stationary gears and oil pan and most of the other bolts needed such as the bolts to mate the transmission to the engine, bolts for the alternator, beehive oil pump, bolts for the water pump housing. does anyone know what size all these are and can i just go to the hardware store and get them.?

thanks. what is the ACV? I did see a plate on the intake manifold. maybe he did it already? where do these freeze plugs go in the irons? im not planning on running it in the winter daily. mostly summer driver fun car. the current exhaust is shot. what do i need to make it whole again.? header, presilensor, and muffler like a borla or flowmaster? the previous owner did buy blue silicone caps as i think he was starting to do the rats nest delete.

I'm not a fan of removing the rats next. It really doesn't gain anything. With that said, here is some more info.

Here is a writeup on the freeze plugs. https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-arch.../#&gid=1&pid=5

The ACV block-off plate is shown in this pic from that same thread,
