Emissions problem. "California"
hey guys im new to rotary/carburetor car's. i recently bought my first rx7, which is a 83' gsl. im having issues trying to pass California smog. So my question is, Should i rebuild the carb? My local smog station say's its most likely the carb and not the cat's. I'm not sure whether or not he knows exactly what he is saying, since they dont deal with much cars that have carburetor's.
I would go ahead and rebuild the carb anyways just so that you know its all working right. Also make sure you run it on the freeway for a good 20-30 minutes before taking it in, and dont shut it off while you are waiting.

while you're in there make sure the Air Control Valve is working properly, if it isn't it wont pass smog no matter how many times you rebuild the carb.

i've never had a carb rebuild actually fix anything... every time i have gotten a carb rebuild as an answer the problem has turned out to be something else.
you can try setting the idle mixture, turn the screw until it runs the best and then about 1/8 - 1/2 turn richer. this gives the best emissions results.
