85 L6 GS/SE project restoration
#256
The car has been sitting all winter and it was high time to dig it out and put some work into cleaning the car from sitting and put some miles on it. On the first trip down the road, I am fairly certain the pre-cats exploded into the main cat. The engine runs but there is a lot of pressure being built up in the exhaust system, or so it sounds. So I parked it and started cleaning the interior and today I will remove the exhaust system and inspect it for clogging and report back. For now, here is a picture of the interior from yesterday:

My oldest son and I took some time and washed a couple cars yesterday. He was really into my 85 and is debating selling his 88 GXL to buy an FB. I can't argue that logic, as I have always loved my SA's and FB's. I was raised on them and have learned so much about cars by working on them and diagnosing issues. I took a couple pics before the rain set in and ruined our fun and wanted to share!

The engine is currently not running very well. Seems as though its being choked out while its running. Converter is getting super hot while its running. I checked spark, which I have, plugs and wires were inspected and are fine, fuel to the engine, compression, which is perfect, main cat was removed and pre cats inspected. All are good and engine was run without the exhaust. no change. Seems like its flooding. I'm suspecting a faulty injector. Once i get back in town later in the week I will remove the dynamic chamber and attached manifold and inspect the injectors and the wiring for the injectors.

Haven't had a chance to dig into the issue much as I have been focused on everything but this car. We are expecting some warmer weather in the next couple weeks. The plan is to remove the injectors and send them off for testing, cleaning, and flow balancing. I figure it's a good place to start.

I decided to pull the upper intake manifold and dynamic chamber to check the injectors. I removed both injectors and only one is functioning properly. The plan is to send them both into witchhunter for cleaning and flow testing. Hoping maybe the one that's barely functioning can be revived.

After checking with Witchhunter, I learned that they are three to four weeks out on service. I ordered a fuel injector pulse machine and decided to try and service them myself. The tester is handheld and works great. I had to make a harness to adapt to the little machine to my injectors but it works fantastic.
I was able to get the clogged injector pulsing, though not as strongly as the other injector. That guy hits pretty hard. I'm going to sonic clean the injectors in my sonic tank and continue to work some cleaner through the injectors every night after work with my little machine. I got a new intake manifold gasket on order and it should be here by the weekend. Hoping to have the car back together by then.
I'll post some pictures of the little machine as well. For what I paid, it's an amazing investment for injector diag!!!

Curious to see injector pulser you're referring to. I have an injector pulser kit i believe made by Matco i've had for many years. It's been very reliable. I bought it to do pressure/volume drop tests to help diagnose dirty/faulty injectors without disassembling engines to do so. Handy tool.
Will post a pic later today.

Following up, I snapped some pictures of the injector pulser last night. I ordered it from Amazon for right around $20 and it works very well!! It does require an adapter harness to be made so that it can work with different injectors. You would either have to buy the pigtail or snip one off of a harness like I did. Happened to have a cut harness from an 87 RX-7 that had the same injector pigtails as the SE. It worked perfectly, though still dirty. The unit comes in a nice zip up puch that nicely lined with padding and a velcro strap to hold the unit in place. Very cool indeed!!

I was able to get the injectors cleaned last night. The one that was giving me trouble is flowing nicely now with strong pulses. I also got my new upper intake gasket in from Atkins Rotary so that means the car gets to go back together today and get all cleaned up and ready to get back on the road!

Well, the rear rotor's injector is dumping in fuel at an alarming rate. The plugs are fouling as the engine is running and the converter was red hot after running the engine in an attempt to get it to smooth out. Back to square one with the injectors. Time to find a known good set and just replace them.
I did wash the car yesterday and I was happy with the results! I will drive this car this year, that's my goal.

Dave, did you check duty cycle of both injectors to be certain it’s not a control problem and rule out a compromised injector harness/wiring issue?
Did you reinstall injectors in original positions by marking them somehow? Was flooding condition present on rear rotor originally?

I was able to use the injector pulse tool to pulse each injector separately and comparatively, the both appeared to flow the same.
The injectors were installed in the spots they came out of with respect to the front and rear rotor. Flooding was not present originally. One injector just stopped working the last time I drive it. The car fell flat on is face and I thought I lost compression but when I got it home I verified compression with my rotary compression tester. Exhaust was red hot and I figured I was running way leanna the engine had low power and was running poorly. I pulled the injectors and when testing the injectors, I found that one would not click when 12V was applied to it. I then used my injectors pulse tool and verified that the injector was hanging up considerably most of the time and not working the other half of the time. I thought the flow looked ok on the bench but apparently I was wrong as the flow may have been too much...though it didn't look like it was.

Cleaned up the interior after work just to keep it decent. Going to pull the injectors again this week and send them off to be professionally flow tested and cleaned. Would love to have the car back on the road this summer. It's been far too long since it's been driven. Plus I have another GSL-SE project coming and I want to make sure I'm on top of everything before I bring another restoration in the mix.

Got the injectors in and the engine is still having a hard time running. Its not always getting fuel when cranking and then sometimes the engine is flooding whe cranking. Plus I found a bad coil. Looks like I still have some stuff to sort out.

My buddy Sean, 82TransAm here on the forum, came to visit from New Jerse. He and I went through the car today on a whim and figured out I was not getting adequate spark. We traced the issue to chewed wiring for the coils. The wiring was near the ecu and was part of the ground circuit for the coils. On top of that, the spark plugs were toast. I repaired the wiring and installed a set of spark plugs and the car is up and running as good as new. Zero issues as of now! Will definitely get some current pictures up! Very happy the car is back on the right path!
