IN 1985 rx-7 gs

Hey all!

Back again with a different RX.

Last night I picked up an impeccably clean 1985 GS with an automatic transmission. It has 90,000 miles on it

It has a brand new black paint job with a red cloth interior, crank windows, manual locks, but does have AC and the power fuel door release that still works. It isn't as loaded as my last one (84 GSL with 43k on the clock and a red leather interior), but we wanted one with an automatic transmission (getting harder to drive a stick with a bad knee.)

I had some initial questions pertaining to some conversion options.

First, I want to convert it to power windows and locks. I couldn't find any write ups on how to do so, or if it were possible. Anyone got the details on these ideas? Same with power mirrors (this seems to just be a find the switch and mirrors and wire it up type of deal).

Next, I want to find one of those roof band targa things that go on the B-pillars, as well as the lower door covers that are metal. Any secret to mounting them if I find them?

I do eventually want to find a GSL or SE with the LSD rear end and rear disc to swap, just to make it more fun. Can I do that without swapping to a five speed?

And also, I'm looking for read leather seat skins. Is there a place that sells new skins for these? I really don't want to take it to an upholstery shop and have them charge me an arm and a leg for new leather.

Basically just trying to make this as GSL-ish as possible.

I live in Indiana, and it's really hard to find parts in junk yards, or even part outs on local CraigsLists.

I'll have pics up tonight. It's a cool car!

Here's a pic of the car, pre-claybar and wax.

Anyone have insight on what to do with the above mentioned desires for conversion?

Looks pretty sweet. I wouldn't touch it! Save your money for any engine maintenance that may come up (along with other wear and tear stuff like Drive Shafts, engine mounts, and steering boxes LOL). The Roof Bands are pretty tacky IMHO.

All of that stuff has been replaced. Nearly every maintenance component on the car has been done within the last year: Totaling up to nearly $3,600 in work done on the car last December.

I love the roof band. It gives the car a distinguished look, especially when the piece is cleaned up.

Thanks for the compliment!

car looks great, can't wait to see more pics of the car!!!

you can swap in a 5spd and have a GSL-SE or GSL rear end swapped in as well. if you do decide to swap in a 5spd and need some guidance, I did a writeup on it with pics detailing what you need to do to complete the conversion.

Thanks!

Yeah, I'd like a stick and the LSD rear but due to knee problems between my father and myself, driving a stick is uncomfortable many times.

I've considered going no-pistons on it, but we'll see.

Went to the yard today and was able to snag a black shift ****, rear hatch courtesy light, and a power trunk popper off of an RX that was equipped with said features!

Oh yes. Every gas station seems to have someone who has no idea what it is.

Thanks!

It's fun, albeit slow, but still fun.

It seems like everything in this car is pre-wired for higher-end options. Looks like I just need to keep hitting various junk yards to find one with power locks and windows!

It'll be a "GSL-S" soon enough :P (No E)

Thanks!

We were able to snag a set of rear window louvers and an OEM "whale tail" spoiler locally as well.

Sometimes it just pays to ask people on CraigsList if they'll sell misc parts off of their car!

Louvers are on, spoiler needs to be painted and installed.

Next up is wheels (Hopefully).
