MI 1985 GSL-SE Turbo Build

Hello My Name is Don and here is a little history about myself and my car to start things off.

Back in 2008 I was looking for a new car. While looking around my buddy told me about the rx7 and the engines they have. I looked for a while nothing in my price range. Then i checked Craigslist and found an 85 GS. I went and checked it out. Took it for a ride and fell in love with it instantly. Picked it up for well below my budget for 400 bucks drove it home. 6 months later the engine blew water seals. Looked for an engine. couldn't find anything. Then i found another 85 RX7 again on craigslist in 2011. It was my now 1985 GSL-SE Thing is in awesome shape for being a Michigan car 1500.00. Drove it home and all i have replaced is Suspension, Slave cylinder, and tires. Has one Rust spot by rear quarter.

In the build thread I will Repair the rust and plan on going turbo.
My HP Goal is not hard to reach. Just 250 to 300.
I don't plan on going internal.
I just want something to wake this beast up.

I am new to forced induction. So will be looking for some advice on what to use and whats the best thing to do. I would like to do this as cheap as possible but don't want to cut corners or sacrifice quality at all. Ill be buying used parts.

So to start it off I was thinking of using an s4 turbo, s4 exhaust manifold, And intake. But my question is. Will it work? Do i need some kind of block off plates? Or can i just bolt it on?

Will post some new pictures.

Do a search for the S4 intake swap, a memeber named "John64" did it and has a bunch of pics of the swap. It doesn't bolt right on, but it's close. As for the turbo, S5 stuff is better than S4, so if you can find that go for it. Not sure if it bolts right up to an SE block, but I assume it would.
What do you plan on using for engine management?
Oh and get some bigger pics

Actually the TII lower intake is the same bolt pattern as a 6 port block. Getting the turbo stuff on there isn't the problem. The TIIs are 4 injectors where as the GSL-SEs are only two injectors. The Computers on the GSL-SEs are fuel only where as the TII computers are fuel and spark. Fuel and engine management are going to be your most costly upgrade. Unless you want to go blowthrough carbed. Then you only have to worry about upgrading the ignition. Either or, good luck.

What should i use for engine and fuel management?

Also could i just get a turbo exhaust manifold and then up grade fuel and engine management?
Then throw a inter cooler on it and lock the distributor? Of course all the other **** that goes with the turbo

I'll let you start on page 4 of my build thread and you can decide on what route you would rather go. https://www.rx7club.com/build-threads-293/project-updates-553481/page4/

Viewed your build. That car is my dream car right there. What is the color you have on it ? In time i hope i can get my car to that stage. Have to start somewhere so a simplest turbo setup to start with is what I will have to do for now until i learn more on forced induction.

I also am in the middle of a deal i recently built a dirt bike and a guy i found on craigslist has a na fc that he wants to trade for my bike i have next to nothing invested into the bike. He says the car has one rust spot on the door size of a quarter. engine runs good needs a thermostat. And thats it dont smoke or anything. Interior is nice as well. So once i check this car out if the deal goes threw ill proly be selling it soon to also help fund my turbo

But the ports don't match or line up properly.

You gotta rig it..

Yes you have to fill and and port the lower manifold. I can post pics of my lower tii manifold if wanted. Simple to do it. I turbo'd my GSLSE motor. I think there might be some good info relevant to what you want to do in my build thread too. For 250-300whp maybe just go for a BNR turbo stage 2. A TO4B v trim with p trim turbine wheel is what I used on my last setup with standalone. Rocked socks. Very quick spoolup and response.

If you go with a tii intake setup yes you should modify the lower manifold. If not you'll be blocking the 5th and 6th ports.

There was a fella on MAZSPEED who was running a boosted gsl-se. He caimed that if you kept the boost low (5-7 psi area) the stock set-up / ecu / injectors coud keep up and you woud have yoursef a very zippy / fun car. Boosted12A was his member name and he seemed to know his stuff. You could prob still go to that website and search his user name for info.

^ Going that route woud entail fabbing an exhaust manifold for the turbo to clear the stock SE intake. Either way u slice it your in for some un-oem non-bolt on fanabbelmentation. Check out the ebay 13B turbo exhaust manifolds. For around $150 they coud at least to get you started.

Thanks to TIIDevil i checked out rotary shack in the bad guy section and yea I cant rick it. So if anyone can point me in the direction of someone with good name and good work ill pay well if they can mod a manifold for me and guilde me in the direction i need to go.

I could mod everything myself but i have never attempted anything this big before and i really don't want to try it on my lovely se. This car is my baby. So point me to that person and id love to work out a deal with them Thanks again TIIDevil.

I have a corky bell (cartech) manifold for an SE. I got it with my SE about 10 years ago and I know the previous owner had it installed on the car. It has a TO4 flange and a 38mm flange, I know he was using a turbonetics mark II wastegate... If you're interested i would probably part with it for 400.
Let me know,
Bryan

Nope. But you are better off using 2nd Gen (NORMALLY ASPIRATED) Intake.
That way you have the [total of] 4 injector bungs, and the ports line up.

After market turbo manifold, and you're almost done.
