look at those welds.

I’m really pleased.

So the fabrication is being done by my father in law. Who retired as a welder in the Air Force and has been at it in the private sector for years. So it’s taking time, as he has other obligations.

It started.

I think my throttle body is a bit off adjustment. Ran at 4000 rpm. So I definitely did not run it long. Chasing loose ends…

Pre silencer hangs low… perhaps too low. Also the starter just died. I bench tested it. But it just went “click” setbacks.

I've got the same unit and have the same problem. It's just a big component, but it really helps the tone so in my mind it's worth it.

On my vehicle it does hit some speed bumps, but I'm also a little over 2" below stock ride height. You likely won't run into too many issues with it, although if it can be pushed further up I would do so. Mine just barely clears the heat shield.

Thanks, I’ll admit it’s a tad louder than I hoped. But it’s idling around 1300rpm. Throttle body needs adjustment. It does sound solid though.

Just as a recap for the exhaust and how I got this sound.

Equal length runners turbo manifold to BNR turbo, 3” downpipe to GESI catalytic converter. 3” Racing Beat universal presilencer and 3” Racing Beat PR Extreme muffler.

holy god does this rev quick. Considering my kids GSLSE has essentially the same engine as mine. Both GSLSE power plants. Same porting… except I have the RB light weight steel flywheel. That and the S4 intake and modern engine management. It almost feel like I’m getting pulled from an outside source. As if an ethereal tow chain is wanting to snap the car down the road as I’m trying to be prudent with a fresh engine on a maiden drive. For a non track dedicated car, I may have done too good of a job.

rats.

We all share in your disappointment.

I'm sure some other member will be willing to take this car off your hands, and then you can start over and amend your "may have done too good of a job" ways.

On a more serious note .. congrats on a really great job!

More pictures

Heat management has been a concern and I think I’ve got it into acceptable numbers. As a recap. The turbo manifold is sprayed with Cerakote and wrapped with DEI header wrap. Turbo blanket is from PTP. Had to replace the charge pipe from 90* to 80* that got me some air gap between the turbo and the intake pipe. Wrapped the intake pipe wit PTP gold thermal barrier and added a heat shield to the turbo manifold and some 1/8 fiberglass PTP insulation to the pipe coming off the compressor. As an aside I needed to reroute my oil drain. Too close to the exhaust system.

previously I was hitting 130* at idle. My data show that was happening within two minutes. Since I had made the changes I was at idle for twelve minutes and I reached 80*. With some reving up to 4k anyways… here is the pictures

Beautifully done!! It sounds like the changes you made will solve the heating issues. It's always tough when you have a turbo that's close to the intake piping.

my original plan was to make a carbon fiber charge pipe that routed away from the turbo a bit more. That had unforeseen challenges, so I went the way I did.

Well folks, I am pivoting a bit.

While the intake temperatures had been... managed for moderate half hour runs... I am a bit concerned about sustained freeway travel. I have procured a TII upper manifold. I'm just going to copy Aaron Cake and his FD to six port LIM to be honest. Ill need a different IC. but hey, I'm not out much from the first one. (old Audi) . I have also started back on working on the seats again. Nothing exciting at this point.

Dang, I find it really surprising how much trouble those intake temps are giving you. You're pulling fresh air in, have insulated charge piping, a better quality turbo blanket, and (I think) a larger intercooler than me but you're running into IAT issues? It just doesn't add up. Are you certain temps are reading correctly? My car pulls air from right behind the radiator and even in the heat of the summer temps were reasonable (warm, but not too warm).

Hopefully you can get the issue sorted out without too much more work.

Data from August 24. Mercury was in the mid90s. My area hits the 110's easy. Mind you this isn't disaster. But after a half hour of driving the trend was temperatures creeping slowly. I would like to drive to meets without fretting over IAT. I'm surprised how well the heat management worked... If iwas at the strip, it wouldhave been fine. Why riskit? Besides, I have seen greater deviant from the course with other projects. This is small.

By all means do what you're comfortable with, but 105F cruising with ambient in the mid 90's is nothing to fret about, and in stop and go in the heat of the summer temps as high as 130F aren't at all uncommon. 40C (104F) is on the lower end of most rx folks' cruising IAT with ambient above ~90F so I would personally say you're doing great. I keep on the boost until I see ~120F, and that's running a high compression engine at 14psi. Heck, IAT retard often doesn't even begin kicking in until at least 50-55C (122-131F) for a lot of the setups I've seen when I looked into this myself a while back. That's about where mine is set as well otherwise heatsoak after parking for a bit pulls timing on startup.

Anywho, again, your car is a darn masterpiece and if you don't feel safe with those temps then do what you need to do, I just believe you're perhaps overthinking it a smidge.

You could have a fascinating conversation with my wife on the topic of my overthinking.

honestly, I tried to research what was acceptable IATs but always returned with vague answers. Your info you shared helps tremendously putting these numbers in perspective. Thank you.

yours is ~15f over ambient which isn't bad. my FC, which has the biggest intercooler i can fit in the car without cutting, is about the same

if you want to really lower intake temps, you'd need to move!

Velocity was limited, as the current alignment is set up to teleport me into a different dimension. 50mph was the limit. I also average 4.5psi peak on the T04b. which seems low for the turbo. Oddly enough I have no record of boost over 5psi. Average peak boost is 4.5 psi. At this time the rebuilt engine is still in a break in period and I haven't flogged on it yet. I have done a few brisk acceleration runs to about 50mph. that peaked at 4.5 psi. Boost managed through MAC valve and the Aux ports functional as well. There is a cathartic feeling seeing the Aux port engagement on the data logs. I have a 7psi spring so I feel I should have seen more. Changing things up intake wise will smooth out the charge pipe travel. I can get a more efficient IC... Slight setback, but not by much. It may also solve some small inconveniences I backed myself into a corner with as well.
