Stock Twins FD to Single E85 Build

Hey guys, My name is Ryan - I purchased this 93 FD about a year ago now and have been slowly making my way through the ups and downs. My goal when initially searching for a car was decent paint and a fresh motor that could be built for a really fun summer daily driver.

like any project, plans change quickly . Basically I had the car apart to fix some fuel issues and seeing all the useless emissions components and ability to simplify with going single turbo, I ordered the Turblown cast manifold and EFR 8374. Things basically exploded from that point forward.

I want a really fun, “reliable” car that can be daily driven here in Michigan over the summers and taken to auto x and track events a couple times a year. Full AC and heat is a must.

Really do not want to butcher such a traditional car so my goal its to "modify" but not go too crazy in terms of crazy body kit, screens all over the place on the interior etc.

I will dump pics into this until we are up to date on where the build is today.

So the car I found was a 2 owner fd. Original owner drove it (based on NY emissions information and carfax) for about 4 years and 40k miles until it lost compression/ had issues and sat for about 20 years in his garage. The second owner (the guy I got it from) was a long time rotary race car builder and had gone through and rebuilt the motor doing a mild street port and while the engine was out, a respray of the exterior and engine bay... and also completed some additional mods that were not really my style. It had some eBay coilovers, power FC, knock off 99 spec front bumper and some 19s.

Not that CarFax is the end all of information but I added that as it helps tell the story of the car and backs up the information from the guy I purchased it from that he acquired it from the original owner and it had been sitting for 21ish years.

Some initial pics of the drive home from picking it up in Ohio, taking off the nasty 19” wheels it came with and cleaning it up a bit.

After seeing how nasty the stock plastic was and attempting to strip, sand and paint myself I decided to send it off to be refinished. At the same time I removed the oem seats and drove around to upholstery shops trying to find a decent price to get them redone. After getting 3 quotes and all of them being $1,000+ I decided to start researching aftermarket options.

Also notice all the wiring still in place from a nice sub in the trunk... yes that was removed.

The car is very clean and rust free from the low miles and sitting in a garage but 20 + years with gas evaporating and sitting that long it was full of rust in and around the tank. First “mod” was going to be a fuel pump rewire but once things were opened up, decided to go a little deeper down the rabbit hole.

swapped out the no name pump to a hellcat unit (Walbro 525), new wiring, -8 fittings and removed the rust + zinc plated the hanger.

Sourced a rust free tank on eBay and swapped them to make sure everything is clean. Zprecision slosh cover in the new tank as well.

At this point I thought I was going to be good for the summer once the interior was back in. Went ahead and put some Fortune Auto coilovers with 10k front and 8k rear spring rates to replace the no-name ones that were installed. At the same time I put on some Titan 7 wheels and new tires. T-R10 18x10 +50 with 285/30 Dunlop Direzza ZIII tires. Also found a local with an oem VR front bumper and swapped out the 99 - spec.

Some parts started to arrive and I couldn’t help but take the stock twins out and test fit the turblown manifold, efr turbo and CJ fuel rails. Went with 1300cc and 1700cc injectors based on the ability for them to run E85.

At the same time, pulled the stock oil cooler and pieced together a DIY “kit” from one of the threads in here using 2 x Setrab cores to handle some of the cooling responsibly.

Basically around this point when I decided to ditch the OEM wiring harness and Power FC for a Rywire unit + Haltech was the point I decided this was over my head and I needing help big time. The good news is Andrew aka AZieger and owner of Z Precision lives a mile away from me.

Andrew came and we loaded up the car to move to his shop/ house for his skills on this build.

One of the first things noticed was a crack in the heater core lines. To get to the core, the dash needed to come out. Sadly, Andrew had to destroy a nice mouse home during the process. Everything was cleaned and reassembled.

With the oil coolers not being part of an actual kit, we needed a proper way to secure the thermostat. Andrew designed this:

-8 AN fuel lines, flex fuel sensor and fuel filter being sorted. Trans was pulled in prep for a future clutch and transmission diagnostics.

With the trans out, it was time to inspect clean and grease up everything.

This also was a good time to take care of the oil pan and brace. The original pan was beat up pretty bad from running so low. Replaced with an OEM new one and Chips Motorsports brace.

Andrew makes this awesome battery relocation kit, that frees space up in the engine bay and saves some significant lbs with a lighter battery. While he was at it some sound proofing, custom brackets and padding were all added to combat rattles.

Excellent build. I like that you're getting into the details (stuff people won't even see) to make it a better overall car.

I've been looking at the Titans as well. Looks like a killer wheel for the money. 18x10 +50 all the way around? That really fits? Are those fenders rolled at all?

After exploring powder coat, cerakote and just trying to paint myself (previous owner had painted everything black), we decided to go for the oem look of bead blasting the oem upper/lower IM, GReddy elbow and alternator. It turned out really clean looking!

To be honest, I never really got to test them well once they were put on because the interior was still out. The car seems to roll around fine without any rubbing for the time being but that might change once it gets an alignment. The fenders are very slightly rolled. If the car does have an issue it would be in the rear (see pic above on how tight of a fit that is) and I got some 5mm spacers to give it a little more clearance.

I think the picture you posted in the previous post isn't displaying (or it's not for me).

Exedy twin clutch was decided based on reviews of other users on here and the potential power levels that the car can make. Keep in mind I really want it to be nice and streetable.
