The Stealth Bomber.....original 10k mile Black R1
Where to start?
I stumbled upon this car on Craig's List located out in Detroit. Original owner 93 Black R1 with 10,850 miles. No bodywork, no accidents, NO mods..... I'm even talking no aftermarket stereo or alarm. Original tires, belts, spark plugs. Basically it had the recalls performed and oil/coolant changes done and that's it
My buddy Tommy 'Theorie' McBagles flew out there with me to look the car over. It was as advertised..... the owner mentioned something about 'oil pressure needle acting funny' and Tom and I both replied that it was just the sending unit. The owner didn't realize the FD experience harbored in our bodies
15 minutes after the purchase we were at a Pep Boys fixing a boost leak, and 30 minutes after we were in a McD's parking lot 'modifying' the car by installing a Power FC. I didn't want to make the long trip without monitoring coolant temps, boost etc.
More to come, including pics and progress thus far

FINALLY. I've got some pics I've been saving.
"HMMM, YES LOOKS GOOD. I'LL TAKE IT!"
"OMFGZORZ!!!11! ONLY 10k MILES!!!"
15 minutes after exchanging the check for the keys: "TOM QUIT *%!% TAKING PHOTOS AND HAND ME THE %@(^ SNIPS. POWER FC, WOO WOO BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP!!!"
"BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. YEAH, THIS CAR IS MONEY BABY, IT'S MONEY! I'M HEADED STRAIGHT TO THE GYM WITH IT, ONCE I DROP OF TOMMY McBAGELS MAN IN HIPSTERVILLE."
And in the end, there was rainbow:

Plans for the car aren't too crazy as of now, you'll be happy to know Mr. Ambrosious
The other weekend I finally got the car on a lift and was happy to see that it was super mint underneath, with areas like the trans hardware looking brand new and not one scrape or dent to be seen.
I changed the plugs, drained the trans and diff fluid and replaced with synthetic, flushed the coolant, flushed the brake fluid, and installed a new OEM R1 lip and new OEM undertray. Everything but the coolant looked to be original.
I mounted the set of '99 spec wheels off Carlisi's 20B car, which are shod with fresh Dunlop Star Spec rubber 245 front and 255 rear. Talk about a major change......going from 20 year old skinny rubber to this was a revelation
Light mods are planned: downpipe and RB dual tip catback, and a nice Nardi steering wheel and mazdaspeed shift ****. Probably some authentic '99 spec tails, and possibly some lowering springs. Not much else though. Car is super quiet, rides smooth, tracks straight, and the A/C blows cold. Plus, little things like the way the glovebox securely latches shut and how the rear bins snap into place just blows my mind. Never seen anything like it on any other FD

Secondly, Sccrreewww you mr. secure glove box. My bins are great however - they look almost unused. Its the removable interior trunk panel that is the culprit.

Sooooooooo...................lambo doors? Ebay widebody kit? HELL YES.
I'm also glad you and Tom got some special time together, what happens on the road trip stays on the road trip .
I'd be in a difficult situation with a car THAT nice and THAT low mileage, I wouldn't want to touch a damn thing. That's a time capsule for sure!

I know what you mean Dale...... I have an RB dual tip catback exhaust just kind of sitting around waiting to be installed. Not sure if I can bring myself to do it

You and I have IM'd about this thing—it's really beautiful. If it helps ease the "pain" of "modding", think about going all Mazda on it—either OE, OE-JSPEC, or Mazdaspeed, and keep it minimal.
I think, for instance, that the JSPEC downpipe had no cat it in. Mazdaspeed coilovers were supposed to be great (and comfortable), Mazdaspeed or JSPEC Nardi, shift/e-brake (if you're so inclined, there's really nothing wrong with the OE stuff). I'd consider the Mazdaspeed alluminum radiator and AST as well, even for the street. It's still 20 year old plastic.
The RB exhaust might be the one thing you go aftermarket with, if so inclined. It's a nice piece. I think Mazdaspeed made a cat back, but it would probably be horrendously expensive and tough to find.

But keep it minimal.
