Silver Streak FD
Yet another FD build thread, because there are never enough.
First of all, heres the pics:
RX7Club.com - ROTRHEAD718's Album: Silver Streak FD
Technically I don't own the FD, but me and my dad share it.
Last year, he was driving in a heavy rain on bald german tires. As he was coming around a bend on the way home, the car started to slide. He could not control it and it hit the curb, flew up, and landed in the dirt. Fortunately, the damage was not bad, and the engine still runs. The bad part was that two of the wheels broke, and there is a hole in the radiator.
So now we have to find rims. The radiator has already been ordered, and I will post pics when it gets here. We are on a budget, but absoloutely love Fikse FM10s. Anyone know of rims like these that are less expensive?

Okay, big update, all of the parts have been decided! If the insurance company pays us for the replacement of the rims, we will be getting CCW LM20s. If not, Work EMOTION XD-9s will soon sit on the car. If we do end up with CCWs however, we will also be getting Apex'i N1 EXV coilovers with softer rear springs. Pics soon!

Yeah. we're thinking the XD9s might be the best choice. What color you think would go best with silver paint? Not sure about the coilover source yet, planning to look at some stuff right after this reply

Okay everybody, the rims are being ordered today and will arive in about 4 weeks. The rims we are getting are CCW LM20s in Comp Grey:

Pix will be up when the rims get here!

Also, we want to go ahead and get the N1 EXVs, but want them with softer spring rates in the back.
Is there a way we can get them softer in the back without having to get extra springs?

Thanks man, its been really slow progress (no progress) since last year
And now, suddenly we're on a 1 month speed build to get it running. Unfortuanetly, there wont be much done to it after that. Except for a secret project.

I sorry to hear about the crash. Glad to see you're putting it back together. Tires are always important to check and maintain for just this reason.
I am a fan of CCW wheels. The LM20's are good and an update of the ever so popular CCW Classics.
I am also a fan of SSM paint on the FD. I am currently looking to buy one.

Still waiting to hear back from CCW, though I knew things were delayed. Just getting a bit impatient.
In the meantime, I finally solved another long-standing problem dating back to my last smog check. I pulled out my airbox to get to the radiator fans and the darn thing was so brittle it cracked in a couple of places. The bad thing was, the hose to the air pump got stuck and broke the plastic pipe that it fits onto right off. I taped it back on and managed to pass smog, though the tech said he technically should have failed me because of that. Did I mention we're in California?
I could not justify buying another plastic air box (Mazda wants over $300) that would just get brittle and break again. I think it's Mazdatrix that has just the top listed on their website, which I considered... but decided instead to upgrade the intake.
I was holding out for a "cold" air intake but realized that was just not possible in Cali if you want to stay legal. Yes, I could swap it out for the smog checks, but buying two intakes doesn't make a lot of sense. I reasoned that I could fashion a heat shield out of sheet aluminum or something, that could easily be removed come inspection time. Months of searching later, I finally figured out how to look up smog exempt modifications in CARB's database. There are basically only 3 possible choices: Racing Sport Akimoto (which seems to have disappeared off the planet), Greddy Airinx, and HKS Mega Flow. I was leaning towards the Greddy because of the sexy polished pipes (and it was cheaper), but it's been discontinued.
So that leaves the HKS, which I ordered from rx7store.net. Jason originally told me they didn't make them anymore, which freaked me out, but turns out he looked up the wrong part number. And the proof arrived yesterday morning. Problem solved!

I left the details up to CCW, they seemed to know exactly what would fit. They even showed me pics of an FD with the exact same setup (even with the same tires I'm getting). They guarantee the wheels will fit, so I feel pretty safe.
