Worked with Chris from LMS-EFI back in 2018 on an R-Spec+ harness

Version 1 was uncut

Version 2 had some built in future proof ease with the mil-spec bulk head connection

Version 3 had us swap out the Fan 1 / Fan 2 outputs to the DBW circuits swapped out with the IGN 7 / IGN 8 circuits since the DBW circuits rest at ground when the ECU is powered off creating a power loop through the fan relays keeping the ECU powered up even when the key is off (moved over to positions 17 and 18)

I also prematurely spoke with Renna on dialing in the ECU and he mentioned that we can set up boost by gear on the backend, so we added a VR signal conditioner to the build

Griptape was cool in my skateboarding days, but this raised foot racing with the carpet out was not sustainable

Went with Benny's extended heel plate, will be refinished in black with some griptape to keep it rad

AEM 12 position trim pots look good, but wasn't a fan of the stainless style decals (PM me if interested - I have a few set), so I redesigned positions on the HVAC panel

Great to find things that you think might be NLA can be found with some digging

Center channel speaker cover in place of the Tripower dual gauge pod (for sale - PM me if interested)

Atkins coming in clutch on this one too - replacing the Autometer triple gauge pod (for sale - PM me if interested)

Cracked my door cup, but Henry had this lying around - thank you sir!

and a little FIA safety from across the Atlantic

Lifeline Zero 360 Novec kit with the plan to be mounted in the passenger foot well

the fact that this can be turned on and off with a switch is awesome - I was afraid I might get a curios passenger or passerby with the external button to be mounted by the windshield louver wondering "what this button does"

Cartek Battery Isolator XR - a little old on design but the new standard on "killswitches"

and a three-mode Cartek rain light - thing's ridiculously bright and has a few settings for constant or flashing. A standard addition in some racing clubs, with some running certain settings for warm up laps (solid) and hot laps (flashing or vise versa)

Had a few designs on a seamless install. Going with a reverse mounted bracket with as minimal amount of cutting as possible. Thanks for the help on the precision trim, Joe!

Here's where I am thinking on position - having it wired in to the dash now, and will install the actual light on the backend

Alright - not much as far as an update on my build goes, just what we're going with here (for those that have been here for a while, I always used to post up mundane pictures until flickr and photobucket took them all - some bad habits are hard to break)

Cheers!

Nice parts you've selected and fine work to boot! Your build is way up on my personal awesome scale. I also really appreciate all of the small details you put into it. Keep it up!

Happy Veterans Day to all active and retired military Club members, and to all your friends and loved ones who have served living and past

Both of my parents were active military when I was born on an Army base. Both are now retired, but we live everyday with the toll of that time of service.

It is often said in passing, but from the bottom of my heart with full gratitude for what it takes, thank you for your service

There is a fantastic JDM site of the RHD persuasion that has been out there for years that is great, but a little dangerous... and addictive

But mostly great!

Some of these parts literally arrived from Japan overnight - the logistics are crazy. I'll get a shipping update at night that everything is ready in Osaka, and the next afternoon I am signing for them in Massachusetts at my doorstep. Great service, open communication, underpromising and overdelivering is still the gold standard no matter what. Sadly some shops these days have forgotten that

A little added stiffness from Autoexe front and rear

Good bye Cusco and R1 strut tower bar option up front, and Rotary Extreme harness bar in the rear (made redundant with the roll bar)

I had read the weights on the site, and somehow just mistook the pounds for shipping weight... Nope, these things are beefy! Just about negated the passenger seat removal with these adds

Stout build though

Clearly a mock up with the old setup, but I believe we may have to work somethings around underhood to make this magic happen

Part of the danger with this site is that some of the items feel like "well I might as well add X, Y, and Z to make importing these parts worth it"

These are by no means check out lane impulse buys, but are too easy to justify adding

Not exactly Maou performance upgrades, but some FEED pieces of flare

Not sure if I am 100% sold on Amemiya-san's hood diffusers here, but some runs with felt ribbons taped to the hood and a close eye on temps may prove their efficacy

They are rivnutted on, so these could just be track pieces only

Then again, maybe the look might grow on me

It's mostly this angle that I am not a fan of. I mean, I have goofy carbon fiber hanging off of every end of my FD, why is this suddenly across the line?!

And this bad larry has already been installed with the 4.777

I have some ideas on how I'd like to fully seal my v-mount intercooler core possibly trying my hands with some composite crafting (Rock West has some playskool my first baking kits - we'll see), but this Knight Sports piece is a great start

I have had a B&M short shifter for a few years that has started feeling sloppy out on track (or my transmission has started dancing around a bit more... see above post on transmission brace in the works)

Will buy some shifter refresher pieces and try this D1-spec piece. Might try my hand on Ryan's C's or Mazdaspeed unit in the spring if he finds his favorite and I get lucky enough with the one he is willing to part with (hear either one is like butter!)

I had ran into the dreaded door handle sticking issue. Paul and I worked out a solution on the driver side handle, key mechanism, and new keys with some astronomical seemingly just about NLA prices. With prices on these handles at less than 250% than the North America sourced price, I figured I'd grab the passenger-side (and a spare driver-side to make it a full set) for a full eventual fix on the passenger side

As mentioned above, my plan is to run my RX-7 primarily as a single seater (for sure around the track - no passenger seat means no one will ask for track day pony laps). I picked up the same FX-style FIA fixed seat mount for my passenger side.

I am not a fan of the prospect on running the Bride Xero RS driver and Sparco Evo on the passenger... I have a feeling another snug fit super aramid piece will be en route one of these months when my OCD wins over my logic

Lil man watched some old school Best Motoring DVD's with me while we unpackaged today's shipment

Visually inspected and approved

My son and I went through my DVD's and collected some of my favorites.

Actually watched two BMI's while my wife and daughter were out at the ballet. I absolutely don't want him anywhere near racecars, but I have a feeling my actions are nothing but counterproductive to that goal...

And these are the secondary X, Y, and Z purchases that I typically add on "while I'm at it"

This was actually the primary reason for this last order. A solid recommendation from Mr. Hahn after some street driving on his Exedy led him to looking into this fix

Having gone with a Compe-R rigid disc twin cerametallic clutch from Exedy, I have a feeling I am going to be getting a workout and picked up this Fujita Engineering clutch slave cylinder preemptively

and here's the aforementioned Compe-R - big thanks to Chris at Banzai for special ordering this for me

Insert rant: speaking to gold standard service, I had returned an $800 duplicative package I received from a Club favorite company and promptly notified them of their mistake, and I returned it. They were grateful and offered an "any item at our cost" deal for my honesty. I went to phone in that favor on this clutch, and they came back with a price $300 more than Chris. Long rant long, I was disappointed

This on the other hand, was a nothing piece that broke during install of the Cartek XR. Pegasus Racing overnight delivered a replacement cap and bolt, no questions asked - solid gold

Here's something that I should have ordered months (years) ago. I had dropped off an indoor car cover for sun protection out in the parking lot, but with the storms we've had lately...

exhibit A:

...and the crazy rain we had out east all summer, something more diesel will be needed. Not sure when my car will be safely tucked back in my garage, so went with this custom cut for my front diffuser, canards, and wing outdoor weathershield cover

Figured bright red might make it easier to see around the garage for the kids and their bikes and wagons - my wife thinks that's going to backfire and be more like a light to the moths...

And rounding it all out, this was an added free gesture from RHDJapan that I had no idea what to do with (these bags somehow multiply like mogwai's with no effort)

Problem solved on storage for my car cover

hah

Starting to get my ducks back in a row for what I am going to do with my take offs on the back end of this phase of my project. Will have (had) enough spares engine, transmission, interior, exterior to have built a complete roller, but the prospect of a second (third?) toy is out of the picture

Lil man approved take offs list. Somehow he has about 15 (1:43) FD's, but I shouldn't get a (1:1) nother?!

See anything you need?!

The AutoExe 6pt front / 4pt rear strut combo are stout to say the least! I was personally very surprised by their weight(s) imo. I've run the rx8 version on my 'track' car for a couple years now; they can definitely make working on / accessing certain things much more challenging. You also might have an issue with where it mounts to the fender / firewall area since your fenders are carbon. I'm not in the industry so it may or may not require material re-enforcement, etc but I do know it is a tedious install / removal process for the bar. I've since returned to the oem 3pt up front and removed the 4pt rear in favor of a half-cage I'm having fab'd + installed. If I were to consider upgrading my front strut bar in the future, it would need to be aluminum or lighter to aid further weight reduction, etc (rx8 needs it). Not long ago I purchased a Revolution aluminum 4pt but it was lost at the shipping facility here in SF (supposedly, I got a refund but not the point); actually still super bummed about that.

I also recently purchased the Amemiya 'hood garnish' and agree that I'm not too crazy about its' side profile either. I feel I've gone so deep into 'jdm tuner' culture that I don't particularly like cars that haven't been transformed into crazy 'tuner' vehicles anymore, ha. Imo, the RE garnish is reminiscent of the TCP Magic fender gurney flap. I do love all the choice parts and very much appreciate your build.

And how come no Opera? I personally would much rather attend a fine arts event than motorsports. Don't get me wrong, I take great pleasure in attending motorsports events with my vehicle but I enjoy learning and being exposed to culture(s) much more. My belief is that if we live by example today, the future should have nothing to worry about

Thanks again for the compliment!

Yea, maintenance isn't going to be what it used to be with the Autoexe where I could detach one side of the Cusco, raise the bar, and get to work. I have a feeling it is going to take some getting used to, but it will get easier after a few go rounds. That Revolution 4-point looked good (everything Aoki-san touches is!) - sorry to hear that

I was really surprised when the bars arrived and I first lifted them up. Obviously much more support but is the added weight a good sacrifice?

I went on a diet kick chasing weight to get a little faster out of the twin turbo set up. I picked up 295/265 A048's to upgrade the 285/285 AD08R's but would have had to swap to the R1 strut tower bar to stay in class with the 200TW to 60TW swap. I stripped the carpet and sound deadening, and will now run without the passenger seat. I am adding a good amount of weight back with safety, but am losing a solid amount going from a yellowtop to a smaller Braille... Hmmmm will throw it up on the scales to dial in the JRZ's - not sure where I am expecting to be, but I'll report back later.

***Note: some of these weights on the +/- 's were back of napkin unverified while I troubleshot solutions

As for tor the RE Amemiya duct garnish, conceptually, the potential makes perfect sense. My car isn't full on race spec, I mean I still drive my car to and from the track, and this piece isn't exactly the carbon fiber rug that will really tie this aero hodge podge room together.... We'll see

I hear you on the deep into JDM tuner culture - have been there ever since my friend Chuck tossed me a Sport Compact Car in 8th grade gym class. I had religiously read SCC, Turbo, Super Street and Import Tuner cover to cover before I got my license, it all went overboard when I got my learners permit and Integra GSR. It has been a lot of fun since, expensive, but mostly fun

I usually join our family trips to the ballet. My wife's friend's daughter is in the company, and we typically bring my daughter to the lighter, kid friendly, Q/A session dress rehearsal once a year.

My daughter is now doing ballet and tap, so she's been dancing around the house since her show. My tiny dancer still dresses up as her favorite princesses and uses my stripped, seatless interior as Ahtohallan. Hoping she still has some interest in coming back to the track with me (reiterating forever out of racecars, just around them)

It sounds like you and I share some similar interests and life experiences.

The GS-R is an awesome first car. Bet you've got quite a few stories revving the heck out of it. I have tons of early 2000's memories going to the illegal drag races around here, etc. You don't still happen to have it? My firs car was a blue '90 GTU. Definitely still wish I had it.

And the pic of you and your daughter on the grass is wonderful. Love seeing the hearing protection too Dad!

Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work!

Maybe consider drilling lightening holes in the front and back braces?

Speed holes would make the car faster - you might be on to something

Considered that but I can picture myself at my friend's press (he has the solid equipment for these kinds of things vs me trying my luck with a dremel) in analysis paralysis trying to figure out where best to drill while not hurting the integrity of the bars

There's still a lot of weight to be lost in my car before I resort to this - simplify and add lightness!

That GTU must have been a really fun first car. I still love looking back at them today (RX-7Club - obviously a little biased). Do you still have it?

Bet you've got quite a few stories revving the heck out of it.
Absolutely! I was too young (naive? 15 years old) to fully understand that my N/A 1.8L 170hp FWD wasn't the fastest thing out there (Stephen Papadakis and Lisa Kubo used to make it look so easy!).

I had a cold air intake, cat back exhaust, hi flow catalytic converter, coilovers, and an upgraded clutch. I learned to drive a manual around our property at 14 on a Suzuki Sidekick, but didn't reaaally learn until my Mom taught me a lesson with my GS-R on a hill in traffic in Waterbury where rolling into the car behind me was not an option... The clutch did not like the lesson, but I can now drive a manual - thanks Mom! I eventually killed that clutch and moved to an ACT.

My sister and I once lined up with her in our Mom's Pontiac Grand Am GT sedan (red - plastic looking but was a cool Mom's car then in my opinion) and me in the Integra and she smoked me! Embarrassing!

Here's a picture of the day I bought it. The pictures towards the tail end are embarrassing from a "huh, you thought that was a good idea?" 2021 perspective

You don't still happen to have it?
Sadly no, it met an early demise. I had started collecting parts for a replacement GS-R or Type R build after. I had actually test drove a low mileage <3 2001 Phoenix Yellow Type R. I looked way too young but had some money from the totaled GS-R gap insurance to justify someone letting a child test drive a Type R. Such a fun test drive! I still to this day would love a stock Type R in my stable. I'd prefer that over a stock 3rd Gen RX-7 these days.

My friend Andy had sold a Laser for a 1997 MKIV Supra TT and I knew I'd need more than an FWD B18C5 to keep up....

...insert FD3S 5 months before graduating high school.

I traded all of my Integra parts for an HKS Racing Suction Kit and A'PEXi N1 exhaust for the RX-7. I had an authentic Bomex bumper then; I lost out on the deal (aesthetically no in hind sight; monetarily absolutely!)

And here's a shot of my Mom's Pontiac replacement - a 2004 Winning Blue RX-8 6MT next to my FD and BE 2.5GT 5MT (would trade my E92 in for the thing today if I could)

Here's something fun I tripped over while looking for pictures of my Integra on my external hard drive. Found a field trip to one of Ihor's old shops when I gave a local FD owner a ride to pick up his car from NJ.

You have come a long way to your pristine new shop

And here's one while I am stuck in nostalgia that makes me a little sad. This car has come a long way. For the better? Debateable.

If I could just have one of these back...

My wife and I had some fun with the Type FX seat rail and Xero RS last night - will post up a comparison to my other rails shortly

These cars are getting a lot louder these days - I might be needing my own ear protection for the next race (old man's getting old!). I'll post on that in a little bit

Amazing thread.
Thanks Ben - so much good stuff on the Club build threads lately!

You're in luck; today is all throw back pics!

In looking through some old family pictures, re-reading some of the great advice the Club gave me before and after my daughter was born, and what I have learned since, I boiled down my parenting lessons over a goofball picture retrospective

Preparation - plan as best as you can, expect the unexpected, and adjust where needed

Patience - you'll get your point by next turn, next lap, or never.

Acknowledge that you don't know everything, know when to hang back and watch - you might learn a thing or two

Relax - don't take yourself too seriously and know when to laugh at yourself

Unwind - know when to take a break to recharge

Adapt - lean into and embrace the discomfort

Safety - first, second and third

ALWAYS LOOK BOTH WAYS ! !! !!!

Introspection - don't be afraid to be critical of yourself and know when you can do better - aspire to be the best you you can be

Kindness - treat others as you would like to be treated, do a good turn daily, leave it nicer than you found it, help where you can, be the change you want to see

Creativity - think outside the box, embrace differences

Friendship - if you want to go fast, go it alone; if you want to go far, go it together

Surround yourself with good people and you'll find wonder in the levels you can reach together

Keep those you have lost in your heart, be better for them

Bravery - try new things, don't be afraid to fall, fail forward

Openness - know when you are out of your element and when to ask for help

Success - take pride in your accomplishments, but don't rest on your laurels

Keep moving - some times you're just left with your head in your hands; it gets better. Seize the day, forward is the only option

Evolve - times change, hold true to your values, be brave, adapt and grow

Forward. Always.

Love - hold on tight to that which you hold most dear

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Krampus, and Happy Holidays from my family to yours!

Wow that's so cool you have all those physical pictures from the past! Aww bummer, the GS-R was totaled huh? No I unfortunately don't still have the GTU, wish I did though. It definitely was a blast and first cars are always special for nostalgic reasons. Lots of fun memories being young ripping around with car friends. Funny enough, I too picked up the 3rd gen around the time of graduating high school as a gift to myself (very long story). Back then, I had a friend who's Dad kept buying him Type-R's that he'd swap jdm front end conversion/interior and fully build n/a engine's. This was when Skunk2 still had their facility in Hayward, CA. I used to know a bunch of people over there before the brand completely blew up. Guarantee he wishes he still owned any of them, ha. Let alone my buddy who had the E30 M3 in HS, yikes. He's come to term with it these days but I can tell you with absolute certainty that the E30 M3 is not that nice of a car. He wasn't crazy about it then and (from what I remember combined with the relative experience of a 18 yo) the performance / driving dynamics were barely greater than that of my stock GTU.

Yeah I always wear hearing protection on track and my car isn't particularly very loud by comparison. Imo, it's little insurance to protect yourself from a permanent hearing impairment. I know way too many technicians (and fathers for that matter) with a range of professional (or hobby) related disabilities. Primary reason I stopped wrenching.

Happy Holidays

That's right, you did say you no longer had your GTU - sorry for your loss. What color was it?

There's a saying, you shouldn't meet your heroes. I found my drive in an E30 M3 and a few non-turbo 964's sadly underwhelming. They are both two of my favorites of all time from a looks perspective, but I would say appreciating garage queens be damned and mold them both to my whim for maximum track fun if I owned them. Having test drove two F80 M3's, one manual and one DCT, as daily driver replacement considerations, I found they checked all the right boxes but were too big for track fun but just the right size for daycare and kindergarten drop off. E30 would be my choice in M3, but with some serious bastardization. I haven't driven my brother's E36 M3 yet, but his style isn't far from my own (most blokes are going to be playing at 10; what we do for that extra push is turn it up to 11) - maybe the E36 could be the one?

The one time my expectations were perfectly aligned with reality in a run in with my hero was in my friend Klay's R35 GTR when he was generous enough to give me a session up at Club Motorsport in Tamworth, New Hampshire. The old joke that the car is good enough to drive itself is relatively true, but in a faster than your mental capacity 550whp (in his build), point and shoot, instant gratification kind of a way. Wouldn't be my track weapon of choice (open checkbook hypothetical), but damn is it good!

Rest in peace my dear friend (the GTR - not Klay)

What's your name Mr. Federighi? I am enjoying our conversations and am a bit old school in formalities (hence why I stay in my own RX7Club corner versus any social media platform).

My GTU was that really nice sapphire blue metallic; one of mazdas' best colors imo. It was a wonderful first car and I loved nearly every minute of it. The awful part of this story is that I left it parked in front of a friends house while I was in between apartments and as luck would have it, had really lame neighbors with nothing better to do so it was eventually towed. Now for the kicker, the tow company claims they never received it. I'm still kinda irritated by that to this day to be honest.

Yeah I couldn't agree more that I also thoroughly appreciate fine German 80's vehicles. I was lucky to have friends with either good taste or parents with deep pockets because there were always nice cars in our group. The like 'leader' of the HS group had a purple e36 m3 (not sure the year but it was brand new with wheels, exhaust, you name it, people literally hated this dude for it) and another friend (after HS) picked up a 190E 2.3-16V. What a cool car that was being a sedan powered by a Cosworth. IIRC, 1st gear is down where 2nd is typically found. And a new German vehicle (performance or not) would be perfect for dad / daily duties. I get to use my wife's '16 x1 from time to time and for what it is, is a fairly nice vehicle.

Your friends' old GT-R seriously looks the business; I bet it was a wild ride for sure! How funny you mention the R35 can practically drive itself, I remember evo 8/9's having a similar temperament.

Oh and my name is Paul (Federighi), it's been great getting to chat with you as well

Here's my silly car for reference. Last time it'll look this tame. Currently under the knife.

My name is Rick - it's great to meet you! Eeeep - zero closure on that GTU, huh? Really sorry to hear that. Sounds like some pretty solid hardware in high school - we were way more ragamuffin, but it was fun

Wow - your RX-8 is beautiful! Some great looking exterior choices - what do you have there?! Please share some pictures here after you get it back. It's going to look killer with those Advan R6's - holy super meaty on the 18x11's!

Klay's GTR is (was?) my favorite friend's car to date (if that's a thing?). He has been a track rat since the 90's, old school friend of Barry Primus, with a few Supras, Type R's, Evo's, M3's, then the GTR. His final version was almost my aero twin, but in more of a boss mode kind of a way

Penultimate battle mode for him with Anthony's GT4 in the middle

The GTR met an early demise then he found his way into a 2018 Porsche GT3 - very nice, but I preferred the R35 (well visually...)

Sticking with Klay for this update and will share some pictures from our two season (well karting for longer, but not "officially" - my sister and I used to have a caged go kart that we carved a track around the woods of our childhood house... not too far fetched that I'd find my way onto race tracks. We were doing time trials when I would have thought time attack was clock assault) ran karting championship league that we ran.

Full point system, qualifying sessions, reverse grids and a few mid-season updates to keep the races fair and interesting, multiple races per event, and trophies. Some hard fought battles and some yelling - so good! Honestly just as good or better than a track day

Should hopefully be getting the league back up and running next spring. The outdoor track we used to run is no longer opened - we had a few racers lose wheels mid-race and one racer lose his steering wheel in his hands mid-corner.... it's probably for the best. We'll find a new option indoors or outdoors - any Northeast takers for grown man karting shenanigans?!

Barry took season two overall - but we're coming for him! (I mean, the dude has his own Tony Kart and wins many league championships - but we gave him a good fight!)

Update from this morning's supposed "world championship" standards example - proud to say our karting championship was fair, consistently called, and not politically charged by a muppet

Hey Rich! Great to become officially acquainted, it's been a blast getting to chat and I really enjoy your posts. And you always get the best pictures, seriously! What an amazing story about turning your childhood home backyard into a track. Wow I bet it was fun, paid a lot of 'dues' out there too I bet. Funny enough I too was exposed to karting as a youth; those are some of my best memories. And Wow Clay's GT3 is very nice, how does he like it in comparison? A few years ago I was lucky enough to get a ride-along in a 997.2 GT3 around Thunderhill. Whoo-wee that was an experience to sat the least and let's just say the driver was not only very comfortable with his vehicle but knew the track like the back of his hand. I was practically ill after the session. I've never been a 'German car guy' by any means but I did consider picking up a used 718 GTS / GT4 instead of building up my 8. You can't deny their performance / heritage and aren't too bad on the eyes either. Good price point these days too imo.

And thank you for the kind words guys. My R3 Rx8 has the Knight Sports Type-03 front bumper with their under sweep panel + fender canard(s), RE-A carbon hood, RE-A carbon skirts, RE-A dry roof, APR GT3 carbon mirrors, R-Magic carbon exhaust flares, Seibon carbon trunk (wet carbon with jdm LED 3rd light), Plastics4Performance lexan 4mm hardcoated rear windows (UK brand), jdm 4th brake light and Odula 1450mm carbon GT wing. Sitting on ADVAN RS-DF 18x9.5 +22 with R888R 255/35's. I wasn't trying to do the 'blacked out' thing, just how it turned out. Looks nice for what it is.

I will most certainly share pictures when it's finally returned! ETA is mid Feb - early March. It's being outfitted with the LEG 2018 WTAC frp fenders (+ carbon vents), frp / hybrid carbon side skirts (it's a kind of lamination, not the best final result imo) and wet carbon rear flares (riveted to cut / shaped quarter panels, left exposed and faux vent gill things opened up by body shop), front / rear frp door sets (with Odula carbon pillar guards and p4p lexan 4mm hardcoat front / rear windows), reshape / cut rear oem bumper, removable Seibon dry carbon trunk with Voltex 7.5 1800mm custom chassis mount pedestal inside and the RE-A hood garnish thing, etc. Also a full paint job from my wife as a x-mas gift; my thoughts are to just have the shop respray it as close to the oem color as they can get. Interior is getting a pair of Recaro RMS 2700g's with Schroth 6 pt harness, carbon dash delete and trying to decide what standalone / monitoring system to use. Leanng towards a MoTec.

Couple more
