Engine is sitting on the floor still. Just waiting on the last bit of powder coat parts to come back and slap it all back together and set in back in the car.

Nothing wild done with the engine. Cleaned it up and resealed the oil pan with a banzai brace.

Not bad... Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a fan of the integrated front lip 99spec front bumper (generally all aftermarket 99 style front bumpers).

Anywho, keep up the good work!

I know what you mean. I don't think much looks better than a 99 lip. Didn't want to do a factory 99 bumper or a Pettit plateless version so there you have it.

Have you considered maybe painting the lip area of the bumper black ? Just for a visual effect?

Actually I have, I'll paint the whole bumper to match the car, I could tape off the lip part and then plasti dip it. If it looks stupid I can peel it off. . Minor details though, I'm more interested in getting the car back on the road at this point. I can play with the paint scheme later.

True true
I was going to suggest the plastidip but decided not to cause some people dont like that.

Im going to start working on my car soon to finally finish it right and have it ready for sevensctock and since im going to be running a Sanai bumper now i was thinking on doing that to the lip, did a photoshop with my gtc and liked the idea lol.

BTW. I might bug you once i get ready to paint cause itll be pretty much my first time doing it lol

I'd dip it if I were you. Looks way easier and cheaper and you aren't married to your color choice. Honestly if I was hip to the dipping option last summer I would have went that route.

You would've dipped the entire car? Wouldn't vinyl last longer than dipping it if you didn't want a permanent color?

Yea why not?
Wrap might last longer, might not. I had one of my company fleet vehicles wrapped and it was expensive ($2700) and it didn't hold up all that well. I also had I to have it done be a 3rd party. I could have done the plasti dip myself. I've never done one but after looking at the videos it's way less work than actually painting the car. Between the two I personally would definitely go plasti dip. That's just me.

Ive thought of doing that , but the one time i tried dipping a spare wheel i didnt like the texture to the touch. Im sure i probably didnt clean it right or maybe i didnt shake the can well or something, but still lol. Ive seen how Phil has done his car time after time and it looks good in pics, but i havent had the chance to be next to one dipped car in person and be able to feel the texture.

My car is painted with the Mazda gray galaxy pearl , but since i made a custom wide body last year, we didnt have much time left before SS16 and car wasnt done right. It was done pretty much just so it wouldnt go primed. So now that i have a bit more time and body panels just need to be smoothed i want to paint it right. Probably wont be painting it again for a couple years after this.
Only reason im not set on a color yet is because ive thought of other colors just messing around, but i love the one i had and im pretty sure at the end ill just keep it the same.

What id probably bug you with is mostly for some tips about the painting process and such.

EXACTLY

i'll be "dipping" my car soon. maybe next month.

i'm going to attempt a CYM yellow color and see what happens.

if it doesn't work out, i'm out a few hours and 150$ for the spray. (my friend has a sprayer)

i've seen phil's FD up close (herblenny) and rode in the car. he has done his in several colors, and it's cost him probably less than $100 each time, and he gets a completely different look. from what i understand you just have to do a decent job masking things off, and you have to lay the rubber on THICK or it is very difficult to remove (the thicker the better when you're peeling it off).

I have no experience yet with plasti dip but I have been spraying finishes for exactly 20 years this year. Usually if you get a rough texture you are not getting enough material on the surface. Either have the gun to far away from the surface or you have the gun adjusted wrong/ not enough fluid coming through/ over atomization.

in the dipmycar.com videos he is spraying the finish with a cheap *** turbine style gun. That might be fine for plasti dip, definitely would not cut the mustard with traditional finishes. His final product looks amazing though so I have a feeling that plasti dip is pretty hard to **** up.

Anyway feel free to ask away with questions on regular painting. I would definitely recommend practicing on a few parts before tackling an entire car. It can go south on you really fast if you aren't ready to work through the problems you WILL run into.

The one question I have for Phil or anyone who has done the plasti dip is about the masking of edges. I have some in a rattle can that I will play with. I am curious how much overspray you have to prepare for in the body seams, like around the head light covers, door jambs etc.. I wonder if that has to be masked off too or whether or not you can just peel off the over spray. Either way I looked through the website and this coating seems like the way to go and I suspect will only gain in popularity.

Yea it could be one of those. Ive seen the videos and the "kit" they sell for that, my friend in Cali has the kit so i could borrow it from him but honestly im more inclined to paint it with actual paint. I know everyone has their own techniques as to how spray and everything and the only time ive done it was last year but it was in a rush. But thanks, i really appreciate the help and will hit you up once im close to that. sorry for kinda thread-jacking

Well at least on Facebook you don't have to deal with moderators who want to remind everyone of the rules everyday of the week like around here.

I still much prefer the forums for car talk regardless of a few sucky moderators. I always felt that mods should be swapped out every month or so. It tends to go to people's heads.

I would probably have stayed on at nopistons.com but after Phins handed the keys of the forum over to the new guy it just doesn't have that same zing to it. We had a good crowd here and there for a whole but it's dwindled down since the mid 2000's.

yeah i have the same feeling, but with rotary-car-club. (edit: that gets edited out to ********** really?)

there are several high quality guys, and a better "feel" over there, but it is generally very, very slow.

Just dropping a line to let the the forum know that I am moving. My wife and I decided to separate, Which is why the car project has been on hold. Marriage was on the rocks... I will be moving my fd project to my new pad.

The car is currently in hibernation. I will get back on track to wrap it up when I get settled into my new digs in two weeks.

Peace out...
