My BB R1 Build

I made this thread to serve two purposes, one is so that others and I could see the progress on my project. The other is kind of a second introduction thread. Some of you might know me, but most don't. I've been a member for a couple years now, but was a complete noob at the time so I've mostly been spending the past couple of years reading and trying to learn as much as I could before posting and looking like an idiot. I'm still learning and still kind of a noob so feel free to throw advice or point something out if I make a wrong statement or anything.

Anyways, a little back story: This is my second FD, first one was a MB touring. Memphisraines82 was the one who helped me the most and taught me everything I know so far about rotaries/FDs. Well the MB ended up getting totalled while I was on leave from Iraq (bad weather, ended up sliding off the road into a tree). I picked up a BB R1 from David Jerome a couple months ago which I'm in the process of working on. Luckily I was able to get all my old parts off my old FD to put on this one. This one is completely bone stock. The only thing I've done so far is a new paint job and put the 99 spec wing on.

My plans for it are to keep it mostly street but also use it for autocross and maybe some dragging. Long term plans, depending on when I have the money is to do a complete 99 spec conversion and a gt35r t4 and rebuild engine. As for now though just installing the smaller parts I removed off my last one.

Anyways without furthur rambling here's pics of the car after it got it's new paint job. The pictures don't really do it justice, but the best I can do for now. Will keep updating as I go along.

Your paint looks really good. If you dont mind how much did it run you? Also what did you use to clean it? (wash and wax type)

Ewww......Clarksville. Brent told me about you and your FD on the "other" forum. I've only got a couple of months and I'll be back, then I'll be picking up an FD of my own. Good luck with your project!

Not to mention, Justin's R1 only had 41,000 original miles on it when he picked it up a couple of months ago Nothing like a mint condition, low mileage R1!! David Jerome at Speed For Sale gave him a killer deal on this car.

MX722/rx74lyfe - Yep the lip was repainted aswell. cost me $1700 with military discount for the best paint job they could do, aswell as some minor body work such as a couple dents and filling some holes where the r1 spoiler was removed. As for cleaning it, haven't really done any extensive cleaning other than by hand. I was told not to use any high pressure cleaning or wax it for 60 days after the paint job. So just been keeping it clean by hand.

The pictures don't really do the paint job justice at all. it's hard to get a good pic of it because every little thing is reflected off the paint.

And yep like Brent said, David Jerome really hooked me up with this car. Only 43K on the body right now, and around 4K on the engine. I owe a huge thanks to David aswell for working with me on getting the car. I was in Iraq at the time and he was willing to work with me 100% on trying to buy it, dealing with parents, power of attorneys, holding the car for me, etc. He helped me a great deal. One of the best guys there is.

Thanks for the kind words, glad to see you restored the body to match the cleanliness of the rest of the car. It had been years since I had ridden in such a nice and comfortable fd. Just give me a call and let me know when you want to schedule the clutch install.

Installed the PFC & Commander, Apexi intakes, and Pettit AST. And of course I got the deep throaty sound now under light acceleration due to the intakes. I'm hoping it goes away once I get the DP, MP, and N1 installed.

Car looks sweet, congrats

I know what it's like to be deployed to Iraq dodging IEDs with your FD sitting back in the rear collecting dust, welcome back bud

Well I haven't posted in here in awhile, but have been working on the FD the whole time. Here's some new pics I took after cleaning her for Zoom Fest tomorrow.

Finally got my profec b installed.

Also put the 99 spec taillights on

Yeah I know the steering wheel looks pretty bad, I'm working on replacing it with a Flying M one.

Really starting to regret having the front lip painted. it's getting scratched to hell. guess i should get some touch up paint.

As you can see, I also replaced the emblems with Efini emblems.

In all, I think it's coming together nicely. Still got some more parts I need to install. I'm learning a ton though from it all. My last FD I pretty much had everyone else install parts for me, whereas this one I've done pretty much all the work myself. A special thanks though to those who have helped guide me and answered my many many questions along the way, such as memphisraines82 who's helped me with all the tuning and been my main go to guy with questions haha. Looking forward to taking the car down to Zoom Fest tomorrow!

Yeah that's a good idea. I'll have to start looking around for one. It really is frustrating having such a clean FD then seeing the front lip just brings the whole thing down.

I'm ordering a Nflow here within the next couple of days. Haha my luck is starting to run out though, problems are already starting to come up. Rear shocks are going bad, have a bad solenoid (secondary turbo isn't kicking on anymore when car is warmed up), and no AC because the car gets way too hot with the AC fan relay fuse plugged in so had to take it out. Still got a lot of work haha, but hey story of our lives right.

well it's been awhile since I've done anything to the car and just been grabbing deals on parts as they come along. Well I recently started running into a couple problems with the car. Have a major boost leak that I haven't been able to find yet, and the turbos have an oil seal leak. Well now that it's summer and wayyyy too hot to be on a track here, I decided to go ahead and finally start building the car back up and doing some modifications. Here's some of the parts I've gathered so far.

M2/ASP intercooler and duct. As you can see it definitely needs some cleaning up and the duct has all kinds of holes from the previous owners water injection. I'm currently working on cleaning it up and it's gonna look like new by the time I'm done. Also gonna have to get some pipes fabbed since I don't have any lol

blockoff plate kit from Banzai Racing for switching my twins to non sequential

IC couplers and hose from Hose Techniques. Their new NX500 series

Greddy Elbow

You're going to have a lot of fun installing all of those goodies, consider a pair of Samco silicone radiator hoses to go along with all of it

Ninja,

Before you get pipes "fabbed", give 2dperformance.com a look see. I am pretty sure they make pipes specific to the M2/ASP. They are an upstanding bunch of guys who know their stuff, so give 'em a shout. It has been over a year since I had ordered pipes from them for my ASP medium. Just a heads up.

Nice build by the way!

Mike

Good to see you and the 7 are still alive Justin! Missing Campbell much?! My engine took a **** so I'm getting it rebuilt while I'm gone. Trying to make the decision to stay with the twins or go single. I'm just pissed I can't drive my 7 before I leave!

Ryan! was wondering how your car was doing. Haha, nah I'm enjoying the civilian life for the most part, but I do miss the guys quite a bit. I'm wanting to go single too, but simply just can't afford it right now so figured I'd just go non seq since I use the car mostly for the track and won't be at rpms low enough for it to matter. When are you heading out and where? Any more FDs new to the area?

Heading out pretty soon, got all my bags packed! There's one more that I know of that got here a few months ago. A 93 VR R1. I think the guy was in 1st BCT, can't remember. I don't see anyone else around here anymore because most of the post is deployed! Enjoy the civilian life man! Can't wait to see more of your project!

Well I finally got time to start working on the car. Of course the rotary curse kicked in the second I started. Pulled out the battery tray and found that somehow the battery had leaked (no cracks or anything in battery....?) and got acid all over the drivers side of the bay so been wasting a lot of time cleaning that up. and of course multiple seized bolts and all. anywho here's some pics so far.

the starting point. only battery removed so far.

here you can see all the acid:

RPF1s 18x9.5 +45. courtesy of Rishie

the track tires that I'll be starting off with. Toyo R888s, 265/35/18 all around. not sure how it's gonna fit up front, seems like from what I've read that it'll be extremely close. anyone know how they'll fit? and of course the westco miata battery.

this is where the bay is at now. all coolant drained, hoses removed, ast removed, sway bar removed, battery reloc started.
