WI Kanundra's street and autocross FD build

I’ve owned several rotaries in the past including both a FC and a Rx8, but the FD has always been my dream car. Coming up on my third year of autocross last year, I decided to stop autcrossing my 2011 WRX daily driver and get something else. My intention is to have a fun car on the street that is balanced for autocross on the weekends.

The first car I autocrossed, I'm on the left:

My current DD that I autocrossed for 2 years:

I picked up a 93 VR with what was described as having a bad thrust bearing. Even though the car wasn’t fully my taste, it had good paint, a full interior, and lots of mods.

How it arrived at my house:

I pulled the motor, replaced the front stack, and put it back in. It appeared that the motor was running ok, until it locked up on me while driving.

After pulling the motor again, I pulled the oil pan and found significant bearing damage. Here's what I found:

Off to Kevin at Rotary Resurrection for a rebuild! Kevin said the motor was one of the top 3 hardest to disassemble he’s ever seen! The motor was already ported, but it still required quite a few parts for the rebuild.

Here's the block I got back:

After getting the motor back, I decided I was going to go a different route for the rebuild since autocross season was pretty much over. I painted the engine bay and began the meticulous job of assembling the motor. I most all of the recommended steps from members on this forum. Ported wastegate, simplified silicone vacuum system, and cleaned injectors.

After getting the motor back in I put in a custom intake, a Rotary Works v-mount, and custom dual oil and P/S coolers.

P/S cooler should be good enough to stop the fluid from boiling:

First filter was on the right, but I upgraded to the larger one on the left.

With this build, I knew my current limiting factor for power was injectors. I got it tuned by Steve Kan, and it made 316 RWHP. Injectors were definitely what stopped me from making more power, but I’m ok with that for now (it’s got plenty of power for my current needs).

Dyno time!

Now that the car was driving well (I need to send a shout out to Fritz Flynn, he had all the little parts I needed) it was time to focus on other stuff. I ordered a set of RPF1’s to replace the heavy rims that were on it. I also have a set of coilovers on order that I hope gets here before autocross starts.

New RPF1's:

My buddy's new S2000 that will be competing this year:

As you can see, this isn’t a dedicated track car but one that also has a good balance on the street. After I get it dialed in for autocross I may try my luck out on a real track. I’ve driven at Autobahn Country Club once, but there’s also Road America and Blackhawk Farms nearby.

Mods:
Large street port
3mm apex seals
Custom intake with K&N filter
V-Mount intercooler and radiator
Greddy Elbow
Wrapped 3” downpipe
Bonez high-flow cat
Apexi N1 catback exhaust
Dual oil coolers with -10AN lines
Additional ground wires
PC680 mini battery kit
Rewired Supra fuel pump
Unorthodox main pulley
Tweakit idler pulley
Apexi Power FC w/ Commander and dataloggit
Prosport gauges: water temp, oil temp, oil pres, boost, EGT
Greddy Profec B boost controller
ACT clutch
Stock twins w/ ported wastegate
Vacuum simplification w/ silicone lines
BUR9EQP plugs
Magnecor plug wires
180° fan switch
180° thermostat
AST and OMP delete
Removed air pump, double throttle, and A/C

Installed the RPF1s that came today. I just ordered hub centric rings so they should be here later this week.

On another note, a vacuum line split and popped off the boost controller solenoid so I overboosted once. I replaced it, but now the car won't boost over 5 psi. I'll have to look at the car again over the next few days because I didn't see any issues at a quick glance.
