Im BACK. (1993 RZ)

Ok....sooooooooooo everyone was right. LS swapping my FD was the nail in the coffin for me... I sold the car...lost interest...blah blah blah.. Fast FWD to now. I began importing cars a bout 3 years ago and since the FD has become 25yr eligible, the thoughts of having an FD again have been racing through my head....well, I found one i couldnt pass, and its on the way! Say hello to my new FD! a 1 of 150 1993 type RZ!

not sure what direction im going with this yet but for now ill be just waiting for the slow boat from Japan to arrive....should be by the end of the year!

Im just glad to be back at this point.

Thumbs up

Welcome back! That's a sweet FD!! and its a RZ !! Very cool!!

It's always interesting to see a LS guy/guys come back to the rotary.
I wonder what the percentage is on that happening.

Can't wait to see future updates on the RZ!

yea as the years went by I realized how special the Rotary really is....I swore I would never go back but the time healed my wounds and the bug bit again haha!!
I have a friend who still has his FD(LS swapped) and he seems pretty content overall, but I know that once he sees my RZ it will give him some feels. My GF is also a diehard rotary fan so it didnt hurt feeding off of her energy. I think the biggest factor at play now for me is the fact that I have the shop space and resources to maintain and care for the car correctly without worrying or relying on the car for transportation or performance. It will be a completely different experience for me this time.

I think you probably have noticed that people figured out how to build reliable rotaries some time ago. I think today people can build a reliable rotary whether stock or 400+ hp following pretty well known techniques. Much less reason to do LS swaps, I think.

thats what I have noticed!....long gone is the notion that the rotary has to be unreliable or dirty. My first order of business will be to convert the fuel system to ethanol in order to benefit from the cooling properties. Assuming the motor is in good working order I plan to utilize the original equipment for as much potential as possible. I would like to see 300whp at or around 12 psi on the stock sequential system and mostly original parts. I will be running stock primary injectors with 2200cc secondaries along with a Supra fuel pump and Haltech ECU. If everything is healthy i dont think this will be very difficult!

I do like the RZ package. Cool KS SMIC and AutoEXE intake. JDM goodness.

Yeah, you big time scored on the intake/intercooler! That's the U-groove IC, probably $1500-2000, and big money on the CF intake too.

The Mazdaspeed muffler is a little quiet/not super high performance but it's a gorgeous piece and if you want something different you can get good money for it.

Any particular plans for it at this stage?

Dale

thank you!......yea the intercooler is actually called the "SUPER -U". I have also added a Haltech Elite 2000 and already tuned it on the dyno..300whp as it is now(res MP/Stock DP) and I plan to keep it sequential. next round of upgrades are brakes(stop tech rotors and pads for now), tires(yokohama AO52), and suspension(HKS SP coilovers). This will get me to the point I want to be with this car. Maybe add a FEED wing at some point too. Cat back wise I like the MS but would like the FEED Sonic Ti. lets see how it goes!

Tires and brakes addressed! I went ahead and did stoptech slotted rotors with hawk HPS pads to update the brakes, and Yokohama Advan A052 tires to give it some grip. So far i love it! We will see how it fares with time. Ultimately i will go to a bigger brake setup but not now.

Wow thats a pretty nice base to start off with and all those cool JDM bits to boot. I almost contemplated finding a JDM one just to get all the rare parts in one go. Looking forward to your progress...

Must be an early '93 to not get the bigger brakes, have the yellow fogs and the early strut bar. It would have also had the OEM Enkei 16's from factory. They changed all those from July onwards. Cool car, I've always liked those RZ rims, just needs some spacers and it'll look ace .

Been eyeballing that exhaust too. Full TI right? How's the volume? Take a sound clip, if you don't mind. Did they not ship it in a box?!?

Don't do it...

That car is already making over 300rwhp and changing out ECU and fuel system for E85 isn't going to help reliability.

Now, I can see eliminating the safety net of stock ECU if you are intent on 350rwhp +.

i Already put the Haltech in. These cars make 220whp on my Dyno in stock form. It’s at 300whp now with the mods. The stock ecu is dangerous with the full bolt ons. Now it is nice and safe.

17’s were the only change for 93. The bigger brakes came in the next years.

No sir, a good few of these have passed my hands over the years, the changes came in July and this car had the 16's for sure, they're pretty rare the early ones .

If you wanted any more specific info on your model, pm me the VIN.
