Dragon FD Build

Hey Guys. Just a little backround... i have been into rotaries for over a decade now and have always owned one. I have had multiple FB/FCs over the years and I am currently selling what i believe will be my last FC (pictured below). Only reason i am selling it is to fund my dream car FD!

I have wanted an FD since i was 14 (Im 27 now) and finally came upon what i beleive was a good deal (i hope you will agree)

I Paid 6500$ for this 1993 what i beleive is an R1. (Dual oil coolers and no sunroof). Clean title, clean chassis, clean interior, needs a paintjob badly, starts and runs.

Here is the current issues

- Starts and runs, but cuts out as soon as it tries to build boost. Cuts all power (suggestions? im guessing rats nest or bad ground?)
- Body is in terrible shape and needs a paint job desperately

I love going to the tail of the dragon in NC/TN so my goal is to build the ultimate Dragon car that will also be fun on some of the local twisty roads in the country by my house. I want it to have 300-350 rwhp. Havnt looked too much into what suspension/brakes/tires i plan to run yet. First i need to get it running properly and reliably.

I am new to FD's so any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Some pics of my FC im selling to fund the FD...

My FD the day i picked it up!

I started working on the engine today. Needs alot of TLC. I changed the oil and started taking apart the intake to find out what is wrong with the cut out as boost. Here is what i found...

looks like a few things have been removed without block off plates. I am planning on replacing all hoses, spark plugs, plug wires, buying the proper block off plates, and from what i read a FC thermoswitch.

Anything else i should be doing while i am in here? I am planning on staying on stock ECU for now. Maybe after i get the body/paint in line ill get a power FC. Any suggestions/help is welcome

Take better pictures. **** is giving me a seizure over here.

Apart from all the vacuum lines which are probably rock hard. Upgrade to a better Intercooler, Rad. Get a downpipe as well. Get rid of that AST as well.

Rebuild the engine?

Here is a good read.

okay man ill work on the picture quality! Thats an awesome thread too thanks!

It already has a FMIC, koyo rad, intake, and a racing beat exhaust. Just need it run properly

Right now i am thinking i will go non-sequential and simplify this engine bay. Replace everything else that stays with new hoses. More updates to come!

I would go non seq as well, unless you want to deal with that nightmare.

PFC is very important, as is a tune. Looking forward to see the outcome of this. Glad you're bringing it back to it's former glory

Have you fully researched this plan? You should also get a rotary compression test done to assess the health of the engine before you start putting a lot of time and $s into it

^ Agreed, functioning sequential is way better than non-seq.

I agree with ZE Power MX6. I finally got mine sorted out and I'm loving how it feels. I'm so happy I went and stuck to sequential with everyone's encouragement to not give up.

Okay, well did any of you guys go "simple sequential"? After further assessment this engine is getting pulled. As you can see in the pics the engine is filthy. Its leaking coolant, oil, hoses missing. Depending on health of engine i will rebuild it, if it shows good compression i will just clean things up and get everything set up properly with engine out of the car. I just bought a power FC so my options are open now. Like i said i just want somewhere over 300whp. I am open to suggestions but right now im thinking i want to clean things up, delete stuff i dont need, maybe keep the sequentials, send my injectors off to get them cleaned, etc. I read somewhere that i can get my fuel injectors bored out. Updates to come.

Well I pulled the engine today. This was my first time pulling a motor on an FD and i think it went pretty well. If I could do it over again i would pull the tranny with it. On the FB/FC's i always felt it was easier to just pull the engine and leave the tranny. The only difference on the FD was that i didnt know about the pull type clutch until i was already halway into it. I ended up just unbolting the pressure plate from theflywheel and it came right out. Also the engine sits in there a little tighter in the engine bay.

Plans for this weekend. Strip everything down, clean it, do a compression test, decide on doing rebuild, order new parts.

More updated to come!

The slippery slope has begun. Hope you have deep pockets.

Not sure how you can do a compression test with the engine out. Maybe an electric drill with a socket attachment. Unless the engine has been rebuilt recently, you probably should go ahead and rebuild it now that you have it out of the car. It would suck to put it back in and then have to pull it out later in a year or two.

With it out, you should replace all original rubber components. Water lines, Fuel hoses, vacuum hoses, etc. Also go through your electrical harness. The oil pan looks like it needs to be addressed as well.

You should also look into a idle pulley for the water pump. There's not much contact area on that belt

Thanks tom! Yes it is a slippery slope I've been down before. Originally I just thought I'd get it running better. Now the engine is pulled. 😄 I am leaning heavily towards just rebuilding it unless for some reason the engine just shows perfect compression. I usually just hook the stArter back up to it and turn it over to test compression outside of engine bay.

I don't have super deep pockets but I have patience. This is my dream car so I want it done right. So if this takes months for me to get all the right parts in fine with it. I can rebuild it myself so that saves a lot of $$. Thanks for the suggestions I am taking everything in.
