The Downshift channel CYM RX7 restoration build!

Hello all, I have been on this forum some months now mainly for research and just generally checking out peoples builds, there is a lot of information on here which is proving useful to me !

My name is Liam, 26 and from the UK. My love for JDM cars started properly only around about 3 years ago, I have always loved the iconic Japanese cars but always figured they where out of reach for me. I worked hard enough a couple of years ago and saved all I could and sold my Golf R32 and bought my dream car Nissan skyline R34 GTR in bayside blue with an amazing spec and parts listing, all high end aftermarket parts which I have kept on trying to buy for the car!

Anyway on to the RX7, I would say I was looking for maybe 1 year, I had a rather tight budget and was considering buying a rolling shell for financial reasons but after a while realizing that I don't have any experience working on these cars, it would be better to buy a complete car. There was a house near me that always had RX7's outside, I would literally snap my neck checking them out, anyway I managed to find out who this guy was and got chatting to him on social media, at first it was just for insight and advise but he told me he was selling what he had and I was very interested. He basically had 2 cars to sell, a CYM + Silver FD however the silver car was in bad shape as he unfortunately rolled the car under uncontrollable circumstances. Him and his dad built the car over some time making it absolutely perfect and it was quite sad to hear the story of the car being wrote off by the insurance, luckily he was fine but I guess he gave up with it.

Him and his dad had planned to re shell it into the CYM but I guess since the accident he just lost the love and they sat for a while, I agreed on a price with him and as soon as I got home ( I was working 8 weeks away and 2 off at the time ) I had a good look at the cars and just said yes.

I am completely new to who the RX ownership and pretty sure it will be hard at first but I am in no rush to finish the car ! I got an absolute abundance of parts with it so its going to be piecing a good car together, I will list a number of parts that I know of, I was in a huge rush only having limited time at home but had to have the car.

Street ported 13B ( from the crashed car )
Poly bushed sub frames all round
Tein street coils ( on is bent from the crash )
Apexi ECU
genuine Defi gauges
Carbon intake
I got a full brake setup with brembo carriers but need to double check what they are

That's kind of all I can think of for now but ill update when I become more familiar with the car and try inventory all parts when I get home next. My plans with the car are a little undecided at the moment. I have planned to for the feed style kit from shineauto (unsure of rear fendors at the moment ) I have managed to find a seller for kelvar backed seats which do look similar to the recaro RZ's no idea how they will be, I will post some pictures on here when they arrive, I have been looking for some regamaster's for some time now but its proving difficult so maybe ill go with something else like TE37's or Works, the car needs a full paint job, full cage and chassis upgrades. The plan is to make a " reliable " street car that I can also have some fun on track days with, the street ported engine also has a single turbo strapped to it but again not entirely sure which it is.

I know this is a little vague but ill keep updating the thread when I start the work and make progress, I also have a youtube channel called " thedownshiftchannel" there is a video on the channel of the car, any support is appreciated, were just a bunch of guys who love cars, I am really looking forward to getting dug into this build and learning more about the cars, I maybe need some advise along the way so ill probably be posting frequent / checking out the threads.

Sorry for rambling on! Looks a great community!

Liam

Before getting to the "fun" stuff of bodykits or rims, take the time and get the car running solid and reliable first. Let the car tell you what it needs. When you swap the engine, take the time to do the little things -new coolant hoses, vacuum lines, check EVERYTHING and do it right the first time.

Have fun! Love me a yellow FD!

Yeah I guess it was just a rough over view if people wanted to know! Plan is to get the new engine in and all running gear and running, then strip it down and order all the goodies !
