APU 500hp Daily Driver you take to the Show
We often do not get the time to document a build once it enters the shop due to a weighing deadline. But this one was for a very loyal local customer and were able to spend more time documenting the process. He originally contacted us looking for a solid FD platform to start a build on. We just happened to stumble on a project car that was never completed that was being stored in a barn in NC.
At this point the car was a roller with faded paint and needed some desperate TLC. The Chassis was a great starting point though being an Original R1 with 72k miles on it. The car car then was brought to our shop for the tear down, Beginning with a new motor being built and a checklist of new parts to go on. The customer then inquired that he would like a single kit to be installed along with all the supporting mods.
We then recommended him take the car straight to Ray @ PFS for the tune on the car. He agreed and pulled the car straight out of the shop with 0 miles on the motor to start on a 2k mile journey up the east coast to ensure proper break in before the tune. He ended up staying very conservative with the tune and keeping it on the waste gate spring to net 408whp. After the tune was done he was very content with the power and reliability of the car to put right at 17k miles on the car the first year and followed our service regimen to a tee.
Fast forward to the beginning of this summer the car started another chapter in the build. We had our painter go through and do a complete color change and correct any blemishes in the body. After a year of driving the car he decided he would like to open the car up some and get a race gas tune for the summer. So we worked with Ray again sending us a base tune to get it started and went to logging the car on the street. The car on 24psi(110 octane) ended up netting 486WHP and 399 FT Lbs of Torque. This was a very conservative tune because we had a few limiting factors and a small AR on the Turbo.
The owner has been great to deal with and has done a lot of small things to really take the car over the top cosmetically along with a great service regimen. This car last time it was in the shop after the tune still managed to pull 120 compression after 17k miles of abuse. This is a testament to how a properly built and maintained Rotary can run if taken care of right. This is not the end of the road for this car and we look forward to taking it to the next level in the near future.
There are many other who helped on this build and we would like to thank them for there efforts.
Ray @ PFS for both tunes
Our in house painter Billy for the Top Notch Paint Job
Shaun @ Radioactive for being a true car enthusiast and trusting us to build this car for him.
Kevin Landers @ Rotary Resurrection for building another strong engine for us
Here are all the specs on the car in category
Engine-Rebuild that contains Resurfaced housings, Brand new rotor bearings, Brand new front and Main bearings, cleaned up ports, Great condition Irons, brand new side seals and corner seals, front and main seals, Rx-8 e-shaft among other things including our all time favorite..... ALS seals. Omp delete with premix since day 1.
Turbo- We had a good start with a good used A-spec long running 500r kit. Custom 67mm Gt35r. Car made great torque and also offers a very well balanced power band all the way to the 8000 rpm redline.
Fuel- We used stock primaries with Bosch 1600 secondary injectors with FJO injector driver. We started out with a Supra fuel pump then later on bumped up to an Apexi fuel pump. Rx7store Rail with an Aeromotive fuel reg.
Ecu-Apexi PFC with tune From Ray through us. On a conservative tune with "out of the pump" 110 octane with 11.2-11.3 Afs.
Exterior- many mods including Re sleek headlight kit, Seibon cf hood, 99 spec spoiler, feed sides, 5zigen rims, Pettit front bumper, Pettit rear flares, 99 tail lights, among many other things and topped all off with a Red candy paint
These are the pictures from start to finish..Enjoy
That is how the car left us the first time!
This is how it sits now after some cosmetic upgrades and new paint..

We will be doing a full kit from us including an 11-blade billet bws476, Injector dynamics 2200cc, New Adaptronic Ecu, and c16. And other supporting modifications.
Thanks Gordon
Like the tough-looking color job, flares, mazdaspeed bumper, and blacked out engine. Not big on the black hood, but, hey. The dyne numbers are very nice, smooth build of torque and it carries to 8500 and still carries 300 foot lbs at 8000. Whatever you did, you did it right.

It looks like the owner has decided to finish up some cosmetic stuff before the new build begins...A custom Wilwood BBK that was finished off with our powder coating and a new set of wheels with some meat for when we reach that 700whp mark
Incase you are wondering the wheels will also be powder coated black

the car's looking even better this time around. i'm sure it'll turn out even better when finished.
the new wheels look HUGE. what size are they?
have you thought about adding fender flares to the front of the car? they'd go well since the rears are already flared.
also, are the calipers staying the single color or are you guys gonna do the wilwood letters a different color? I think they'd look even better with black lettering and they'd definitely go with the color theme.
keep up the great work and keep the updates coming as well.

Thanks for all the kind words... We have talked about doing something with the front fenders for some time now! So that may change in the future. But we are gonna stick with the color on the calipers for now but I agree on the lettering.
But the tires are 315's mounted on a 11" Wheel.
We will have more updates very soon with the car and the newest FD he just added to his garage. Stay tuned

We finally got in the custom built turbo that we had specifically designed for Shaun's Build. It is a BW S476 with a Custom 6 Blade Billet Wheel, 87mm Turbine Wheel and a 1.25 AR with a T4 Exhaust Housing. This will be added on top of the SP Quick Spool Valve and a Custom Built Exhaust Manifold.
While the engine was out we also decided to switch up the paint color a little as the pearl paint job was very hard to maintain.
Stay tuned! We hope to have this car finished up within the next month or so.
