94 Build... GT35R, RE Vmount and a whole lot more............ NOW WITH PISTONS!!
Ah, ok. I know the stock ls7 dry sump system isn't perfect as I've still heard of some oiling issues, and I know they revised it and added a larger tank in the later models but if possible I think incorporating it would be a huge plus, especially if planning on tracking it a bit. I suppose if you are going with an "off the shelf" mount kit it wouldn't matter, but I also wonder if you could mount the engine lower and further back when dry sumped.
It requires customizing the oil pan, but it's definitely been done both via the stock LS7 "damp" sump and other aftermarket dry sump setups. I've looking at doing mine several times (FC and FD have the same clearances for all intents and purposes) but my turbo stuff gets in the way.

^ I understood he said he wasn't planning on it as he posted engine specs above, I was just curious as to why. I wasn't sure if it was an issue with space or if he just decided he didn't need it.
Lost another one to the dark side. Thank you for having your build here on this forum. I have seen of lot of your set up and it has given me many ideas on where to go with my build. I bought the re-v mount based on your build and I am going to steal a few more ideas. Your build was so clean and I hate to see that you had problems with your engine. 500 plus reliable hp I believe is a lot to ask from a two rotor engine. It can be done but I dont believe it will be very reliable.
I will also say that I am a big fan of the v-8 engine but I am also a big fan of the rotary engine. Well hell I am just a car guy I love all high performance cars foriegn and domestic. Each car has its own personality. With that said the one thing that makes a rx7 a rx7 is that rotary engine at least for me. Dont get it twisted I am currently on a build for my car because the my engine blew. I flittered with the idea of going to the dark side also. I can buy a v-8 engine and make some good reliable hp with no turbo. My car will be a street car with its occasional circuit track days. I also understand the whole being grown up thing and not just throwing money into a car all the time. Hell taking a lightwieght car and throwing a v-8 in it is nothing new, ever heard of Carol Shelby(R.I.P). I know you are getting a lot of grief from some of the rotor heads in this forum but I think you will have a good build and maybe less problems. As for me I am not giving up on the rotary. I will give my car to tries at a reliable 420hp. First choice will be a single turbo two rotor engine and if that blows I will place a N/A 3 rotor engine. If this does not work I will not buy a v-8 engine. I will just sell the car and buy a reliable sport car like a porsche. Hate to see you going to the other side but I do understand. It is tough when you put your foot in it and wonder if you will be blowing another 3 thousand or so. I will have Kilo Racing doing my motor so that does give me a little insurance.
Did you notice he addressed most of the stuff I listed in his engine build?
He isn't paying me any mind, he's doing that because it's best practice.
The ls7 is gonna be sick, but it aint no junkyard dog. Don't believe the homers.

I cant believe this thread went from 5 stars to 3 stars just because there is a V8 going in the car.
really unbelievable
Mods, seriously the thread is worth 5 stars because all that great stuff that's in here up until the motor blew.
Can anything be done about this.
It seems like just a bunch of upset people just ruined the rating by giving it 1 star.

^ Who seriously cares about thread ratings?
The mods can not change the thread votes and there is no need to change it.
So nothing can, nor will be done with the rating.

Josh, Good to see you doing this.. and get her done and bring it to DGRR
Regarding this whole thing about LSx swap in rotary chasis. I've seen many and many are former rotorheads who respect rotaries. Many have tried building a rotary and they have gone far more than many of us here. I think trying something different because they have tried is a respectable decision and MUCH better than some (again some, not all) of you just reading on the forum(s) and spewing what you've read. I personally, have too much invested in rotaries to change over.. Maybe one day, but definitely not now. I did however thought about it several years ago as Hinson Supercars are local to me. But after a good friend of mine went from rotaries to LS FD, than to a vette. If I were to do an LSx, I would just buy an 06+ Z06. Mainly because time and money I'll spending, I could get a more modernized car. But than why stop there if I were to give up and move towards pistons... So many more choices!

OK, I'll say it another way.
I cant believe people gave the thread bad reviews just because hes putting a V8 in his car.
So basically, god I hate to use this term, but haters just voted a bunch of single stars and brought it down.
Its not the stars Im bitching about really, its the fact that there were enough people to disregard all the hard work that Josh put into his car and now shunned him out of there life just because he went to the dark side and purposely voted negatively.
Basically its a low blow.
You gotta look deeper into what it really all means.
p.s. some people look at thread ratings to see how good a thread is before they open it up, and new people use it a lot more.

Perhaps the people negatively voting this thread are not hating, they just do not agree with a v8 swap in a FD. Those people are entitled to their opinion.
Judging by the amount of views this thread has recieved in the last 3 weeks (almost 10,000) plenty of people are glued to this thread, regardless of the thread rating.
Trust me, it is not important.
I would say this thread is a 5 up until the v8 came in. I keep up with the thread in hopes that Josh changes his mind and throws a 3 rotor or 4 rotor N/A in the car. Either which way the information in this thread up until fhe v8 is a 5 rating for sure. I am a fan of the v8 just not in a rx7. This is just my opinion and I think everyone has a different opinion. This does not mean that my opinion is right and all others are wrong. Josh thank you for your thread the information is great regardless of those who have had there feelings hurt because you gave up the fight and went v8. The rotary world is not an easy road and is full of shady *** mechanics and money that can be spent very quickly with ill results. I have been shafted by a few shady people and almost have given up the fight myself. Trust me I have had dark thoughts at times too. I just cant do it though.
I guess its just me then, fine. probably because I pay attention to all the details when I make something.

I agree 100% on their right to their own opinion, I just think it wasnt right to slam it.
You know thats it, im going to hire my blogger from CSR racing to get my stars and respect back.....lol

Well folks, basically all of my parts are either sold or spoken for. I should pick up the LS7 by the end of next week. The oil pan is being modified and bolted up. I chose the wet sump out of simplicity really. I will be using the Improved Racing baffle, and that should be more than enough to keep things happy on spirited back road drives.
For the ratings.. hey... it is what it is. As some have commented, my thread has helped give them ideas. If it helps people on what, or even what not to do, then that makes me happy.

Josh are you going start a new build thread or update this one? Be a shame if this one dies, a lot if good info in here and who cares of haters brought it down in starts. We all know it's a five start build

I will be updating both this thread, and my new thread over at NoRotors. I will definitely not be letting this thread die. Too much documented work.
