This makes working on a SMIC sound easy. This is back breaking stuff right here fellas. Thank god for strong boys! Directions suck the big ****** too, you will do things twice unless you've done a few of these. None the less it's done in a day and we have room for more cars

About to get back into it. FC thermostat switch arrived! Yee haw. Bout ready to lower the SMIC and close the hood on this project. Well, still need to fit the pump, PFC, Commander, Miata antenna replacement and tune the car.

The FB showed up. Nice distraction, like I needed another one. Keeps me outa trouble I guess. Got it in the first gen section. Anyhow, be back at it this weekend is the plan amongst other chores. Little at a time

Looks great! Where's you order the FC thermoswitch from? I ordered one, but it showed up with different markings than I expected. Thought it would say 95c on the side, but mine has 97M among other things.

New design I guess or the old "new replacement part number" routine, same part that fits in a new car maybe. At least they have it. I did not think to check with them (Mazda) when looking for my thermoswitch to be honest.. really hit or miss with what they have, mostly miss locally.

mine was 97 or 98 on the stamp. got it from mazdatrix

I believe from what i read before its that the switch triggers at 97c and then turns your fan to med speed
when it turns on vs turning on at low speed

Ended up being a busy weekend for me. Not much done on the FD this weekend. Just got on it tonight. Update on the PR thermoswitch. No markings, just brass with an adapter for an FC.

Pulled, the SMIC and duct. Have it in with the hood closed. Now to take measurements on the duct and trim this week.

TX Tools and duct

Got some disks to make it easy for the air grinder. One of these ought to do the trick.

Rerouting and inspection of plumbing mounts for rad and AC lines. Have to get those right. Notice the AC bracket goes all the way over to the right over the black hose not where it was where I had it., dah. now it's right. Ok, now time to relax. Peace out

You pulled the wrong sensor for the fan switch. That is the low coolant sensor on the front of the thermostat housing, the fan switch is next to the coolant temp sensor on the back of the water pump housing. You do not need the fan switch with the PFC, the fans can be turned on at any selected temp.

The S5 FC fan switch is a direct replacement for the FD.

All be damned, glad you saved me the hassle of fubarring that whole mess up! I guess I will button it all back up and save it for the FC. Thanks for the heads up on the PFC

S4 FC in your sig does not have an electric fan unless it is an automatic. That being said, the switch you bought is not an FC part.

He got it from Pettit, I dunno what it's from/designed-for-originally. It definitely looks different.

That said, the PFC controls 2 of the 4 fan relays. The FC thermoswitch doesn't do nothing with a PFC.
You can only get low speed with 2 relays on. So the FC thermoswitch could bump you to medium speed earlier, or even high speed if you kick the AC on.

I set the PFC fan temps to 86C & 87C, water temps never get high enough to trigger the fan switch.

No, It's not an auto so no need to save it.. Now I can't wait to get home and see where the darn thing is and see why the one I got from Pettit is so different. It's got my curiosity up. Probably have to do head stands with one arm behind the back to get to it right?!?

Yeah, it's kinda tough to reach. You can see it on the back of the housing, but probably can't get to it without removing the alternator.

Hum, you know I went back and looked at the pic on Pettit and what they sent me looks nothing like what they have pictured or what you are pointing too. I guess the only good thing for me here is I really don't need to change it with the PFC.

Yeah, the pettit one doesn't have the extended probe. It's a single wire sensor, so I'm sure you're supposed to cut and crimp on what they sent you. And, it probably works fine. But, not the fitment you're looking for with your build, methinks.
