AB 92 Type R Build

Hello Everyone,
I have decided to start a build thread documenting the progress of my 1992 RX-7 Type R. I am starting this a bit late as I picked up the car on June 6, 2019 but better late than never right It was imported many years ago my the man I purchased the car from. The car sat for about 4 in a garage prior to my ownership. The only mods done to it at that time were power fc, an unknown exhaust from Japan, custom intake box, and a non-sequential conversion. The non-sequential conversion was not disclosed to me at the time of purchase but oh well. And he did add his own aesthetic mods. I'll add in a picture of the first time she was on trailer and the first time at her new home. Car was not currently running at this point.

My friend brought over his FB for some pics

After a month of struggling and some help from my favorite forum I got her running. I added a Walbro 255 to get it started as the previous pump was seized. I also added in new spark plugs. This successes was short lived sadly as I managed to blow the engine after about 2 weeks of driving

The night she left me stranded

A rare picture of her getting me to work

After the engine blew I sent her away for a rebuild and street port. Sadly this took a bit longer than originally expected (total rebuild time was about 8 months) but that wasn't too big of a deal because of the winters we get here in Alberta. Anyways, since shes been home I have installed a few new parts and have begun to break in the engine. The mods I have done include M2 style smic, Greddy elbow, bc racing coilovers, FEED style sideskirts, and a datalogit, AEM afr gauge. For now I will keep the car in this state, at least until I get back to work and save up some more $$$. Next on the list is new injectors but that may take a while haha.

My dirty engine bay

Fitment with the BC racing coils

Sideskirts installed

My slightly cleaned interior

The $20 bumper I picked up

Welcome to the forum!

Always great to see another Alberta rotary! The winters here are a blessing and a curse, as you mentioned; lots of time to work on our cars!

Where did you get the rebuild done? What are your long term plans for the car, this your first rotary? I hope you get to put some miles on her this summer

I had the rebuild done by Conroy. This is my first rotary and for the long term I’d like to go single turbo due to the less than ideal non-sequential set-up I have now. I’d like to keep it a street car that I can have a bit of fun with from time to time. End goal is right around 400hp. I hope to get as much seat time as possible this summer. Maybe I’ll even get to see that feed kit rolling around sometime

Thank you. The previous owner did have the seats reupholstered. He decided to have his companies logo and colour be added on. It’s definitely unique.

A Sad Turn of Events

Today started off terribly. After finally fixing my fan issues I'd been battling for the last week I finally had my car running great. I decided to drive it to work as a reward for all my hard work but was rewarded with more tragedy. While parked my car was hit by a large hydrovac truck. Damage could be worse and no one was hurt so I am trying to stay optimistic. Here's the damage, let me know how bad you think it is.

Alberta Job Sites eh?

Medium bad. A pro can get that out. Not sure if they'll need the back bumper off. It depends on how bent the rear panel is.

It definitely looks like it could be a lot worse. There is a bit of damage on the bumper though as well as the rear pannel.

Wow, that really blows. I can't think of a worse feeling than getting your car out for the first time and having some doofus bang it up like that. Should be repairable - at least that's all the damage there was..

Sorry for the lack of updates, but not much has changed. The damage that occurred has been repaired, and she is now parked for the winter due to Alberta winters lol. I hope everyone keeps their care safe until next year.

Nice Garage. Looks like you could at least do donuts inside.

"Oily rag" wipe down of the engine bay (15 minutes) before the spring thaw please.

Just to clean it up for photos.

I apologize for my ignorance but is the wipe down to prevent condensation from forming in the engine bay? or to get rid of cobwebs maybe? am I overthinking?

Spring Update

After a long Alberta winter, I am very happy to say that my fd is back on the road. Before doing any serious driving I changed the diff, transmission, and brake fluid and put on my new wheels. I ended up needing to raise the front about 1/8 of an inch to ensure I didn't rip off my fenders. I still have more maintenance items planned in the near future. I know the brakes are due for a change soon and I'm sure a new fuel filter wouldn't hurt. Not a huge update, but here in Alberta winter can feel like it lasts forever so just getting my car on the road is a win.

pre-season meet

Stopped for the essentials

This thread hasn't been updated for almost a year as I've been busy with school and other things, but it's about time for an update.
-At the start of last season I got my maintenance out of the way. I finally changed the fuel filter and with a bit of help from an excellent write-up by Dale, it was pretty painless. After that, I changed the fluids and hit the road. In June of 2021, I picked up a FFE step-up kit with 1700cc secondaries. Now that my fuel is taken care of I just need an ignition upgrade and I am ready to start saving for a single turbo setup
-Currently, I have the engine harness pulled and I am following an excellent single turbo harness conversion thread to simplify my harness and hopefully find my mysterious electrical issue. My harness is in very rough shape(I'll get pics soon) so I suspect my hard work will have some results come summer. I also have a few minor things to replace like sway bar mounts and the coolant level sensor but I think I can get that stuff done quick once my harness is back in. Unfortunately, I haven't been taking many pictures as I work but I'll try my best to find some update photos. I'm hoping to have her sorted for 7's day this year, I've always wanted to meet some local rx7 drivers.
-This update is a bit rambly but I'll try and update more this summer

Thanks Zac. The wheels are 17x9.5 +12 and tires are 215/45. I need some wider tires for sure lol.

Time for a quick update. Also look for advice from an outside perspective so anyone who may be reading feel free to chime in. I have just finished de-looming my engine harness and am not entirely sure what I want to do. The harness is in rough shape. Lots of exposed wires on plugs and some wires are very cracked and brittle. There is also this glob of melted electrical tape (I think) that seems impossible to remove. I’m now not sure if I should refresh my current harness or use it as a template and build one from scratch. I will be converting it to a “single turbo harness” as I am non-seq. and plan to go single turbo soon. I will be labeling all the connectors and assessing the damage more this week. Fingers crossed I can figure something out soon lol

Weird tape gob thing. It’s all melted together and super sticky

Grr tape

Once I attacked that white stuff it sharded off like snakeskin.

Sounds like you are being careful with the connectors.

Menawhile make sure you know where to get replacement connectors just in case.

It seems there are a lot of discarded Emission Harnesses about.

But the one you want to be most careful with is the gigantic "Front Harness".

Also weirdly, there is an offshoot from the emissions harness that runs back to four plugs on the transmission.

I see that strand cut off quite often , to others future puzzlement.

Very good idea to get a hold of the "Wiring Diagram" manuals.

Really depend on how much time you want to spend on the harness, a new RHD one from Japan is about $900 shipped.
