Custom Tank and pump mounting (FC)

Here's a few shots of the currently shittily tacked-together tank I'm making for my meth/water system. I found the regular Snowperformance tank a smidge too small for my tastes and wasn't super keen on the fact that its actually just a coolant overflow. Given I want to locate it in the front right corner of the vehicle, I would like to be a little more robust then thin made-for-coolant plastic.

Also, going custom on it allowed me to maximise the real-estate I'm working with and I ended up with an approx. 50% increase in volume.

The tank when completed will be lined by my friend Dave who runs a rad shop with whatever the hell he says he's got that will stand up to methanol

I have yet to box in the top and add the piping to fill it which will be part 2" stainless mandrel, and part left over oil fill tube (so it can have a lid ) but that will be added soon enough.

Oh, and yeah - I am teh suck at welding sheet metal with the tig

Enough chit chat:

Here's the pump mounting I did. The tank will be mounted in a similar fashion with anchors on the frail rail at the front, and side and one anchor sliding over an old stud I'll use one bolt to sinch it down.

Follow the pics and you'll get the idea. And yes, the pump would be screwed to the flat plate before mounting it.

And finally here's some comparo's of the custom tank to the original. And a shot of my control unit mounting since i'm whoring these out anyway

In summary, I met my goal (and the saftey concerned girlfriends' ) of keeping all the fuel out of the cabin, managed to sneak it neatly into one corner of the car thats shielded decently from weather, and increased the capacity of the system altogether.

I would've added baffles to the tank, but that adds difficulty to coating it afterwards ( and I REALLY don't want rust in there....) and since the rear of the tank is tapered, I figure that any fluid trying to climb the rear wall during acceleration will be limited greatly, and as long as its about 30% full I shouldn't have an issue.

Enjoy and crituqe!!

Will something like this pass tech inspection? What are you planning on coating it with?

I don't forsee a problem since the plastic coolant jug seems to pass with flying colours

Its made out of the same grade steel that the gas tank is so I don't suspect the dragway raising too many questions.

As far as the coating goes I really don't know what he's going to put in. He does all kinds of fuel tanks with it and there are several grades of stuff. Bike tanks, transports, old cars, late model cars....tonnes of different fuel tanks but honestly I don't know what its called. Its more then likely some form of epoxy or urethane since most modern durable coatings are derivatives of those two.

And all the final welding I'm goign to do with my MIG here at the shop. I have a TIG at home to play around with but I can only ever get good/great welds with it on thick stainless (like the intercooler pipes you see )

I'll post up the shots of the filler later. I used some 2" stainless els and an old oil filler pedestal from an S4 GXL

Tomorrow or wednesday I'll post the shots of the filler neck.

lol yeah, my 1st ever AL welding job turned out "good" visually, but failed the pressure test. I epoxied it and tested to 40psi.....I'm painting the endtanks silver now to mask the jizz spills

Yep I did actually.

I scrapped the oil filler neck/cap in favour of of a vented setup that doesn't simply have a hole drilled into it. I scratched my head for a while but figured I'd use a gas filler neck. Turns out, the diameter is the same as the 2" els that I was using to feed the tank. Absolutely perfect, met the picture I had in my mind perfect.

Here's the pics:

There IS clearance to the hood, its a touch over an 1/8th inch.

I contemplated keepign the little flappy-deal inside the filler neck on, but after weighing out the options of me fillign this from a jug, I decided to take it off because it might slow the filling down...granted it owuld have looked cool.

Low level sensor

LL sensor installed along with the bung for the feed.

Tanks been out at my friends shop for a week or two awaiting its lining. I'll post pics of the material when I get it back.

Cheers!
