Ethanol Conditioner

Wonder if this is something we should be doing to our E85 powered cars?

i have a hard time trusting a fuel conditioner that they use testimonials of pump gas on ethanol conditioner..

if you plan on leaving the car for extended periods it may help a bit, otherwise i would drain the tank and seal it as best you can until it's time to bring it back out.

the big question is will it keep the fuel from deteriorating or collecting water. i can guarantee it won't fix the most common issues of rust in the tank fouling your fuel system.

the best alternative for E85 guys would be to ditch the metal tanks we have and find an ABS plastic tank that will fit in the OEM location and shield it well. you can't foul the system if it won't rust.

Haven't had that problem, but it's my understanding that E85 plays havoc on a certain part of the fuel injectors if left for long periods of time.
I am taking mine out and sending them to Injector Dynamics so they can take a peek. I got one of the first sets of them, so it will be a good test.

you do have one benefit that most others do not, castor oil is already somewhat conditioning your fuel and protecting parts. in other ways it could be detrimental if left it could also dry out and become sticky versus other synthetic 2 stroke oils, since ethanol 2 stroke lubricants are very limited.

best thing to do is just run the engine periodically even if it is in storage.

i just have learned to accept that 99% of these products are just snake oil that do next to nothing, playing off the few who have a mindfuck that it made an engine run great and testify as such. the irony being that most gasoline coditioners and cleaners have ethanol/methanol in them.

Yeah... I tend to premix pretty heavy too.
Funny to see the people behind me waving their hands in front of their face because of the smell!
I never let it sit longer than a week without starting it.

Also note that one of the testimonials that came up for me when i went to that site is from Ralph Wiggins

So take that as you will.

Sta-bil is also making an ethanol version of their traditional Sta-bil product now it seems. But again looks to be pointed toward E10 not E85.

Golden Eagle (the manufacturer of Sta-bil) has the following white paper about gasoline on their website. They do talk about Ethanol blended fuels (but nor specifically E85) and the challenges with them. E85 will have the same issues just more so.

Most of the "challenges" you hear about E85 on the internet are pure bunk!
I have had it my car for almost 3 years and have had zero problems thus far.

why don't you just pump pump gas in your car when you are going to let it sit for long periods of time, or run pump gas in your tank like every 5 or 10 fill-ups?

I start my car, even in the Winter at least once a week, so this would be more of a maintenance solution if it actually works.
Right now my injectors have been sent to Injector Dynamics so they can take a peak at what happens with long term E85 use on their injectors. I'm kind of one of their guinea pigs.
I am planning on getting one of those flex fuel sensors so I can add pump gas when I want.

My car sat for 2.5 yrs with 1/2 tank of e85 in it and no engine and lines were not sealed. In MN this means ranging temps and humidity of -30 to 90deg and 0-90%. When I got an engine back in it I thought I would have issues...nothing, started right up and was perfect...food for thought.

this is good news to me- mine has been sitting since October with benol in it.
It has been in a climate controlled garage indoors as well.
was waiting to get back on the dyno then I had meant to burn that tank out and let it sit for the winter with regular gas in it ( have easily switchable dual maps ) but we got the hurricane and I just havent had the time to take the car out since.

only negative affect I have noticed is E85 drys out the nylon fuel line ends and they sometimes start to leak.
Good idea to check these every once in a while.

the bitch of it is once you put the oil in the gas its a pain in the *** to dispose of, usually you can just leave it in a bucket on a sunny day and it evaporates pretty darn quick but you still have the oil.

Well I drove the car this past week, was only a 15 minute drive but AFR seemed normal enough, car ran good. Still going to try to take it easy until I run that tank out.
