Installed AEM today any pointers?

I installed my AEM today and it ran like absolute crap. It is probably my fault though since I have never tuned a car. It took a few cranks for the car to start and when it did it was very rough at first. It smoothed out however I could not rev the car above ~2500 rpm. You guys say that you have messed with this and that and been up and running I was wondering if you could give me some DETAILED info on what you did. If you do not feel like typing PM me your phone number and I will be happy to call you. I am going to go meet with Carson Fischer this evening and see if he can offer some pointers. If you could start posting your calibration files in here. I think there are VERY few of us that are braving running this ECU, at least that post on here anyways. We need to stick together and help each other out! Thanks in advance.

Please post more details as each of us have different set-ups. (i.e. my single set-up may not work out great for your set-up).

For starting, I had to increase my warm enrichment map so my car would cold start. It still takes a few turns to start, but at least it starts from the cold. I'm starting to mess with engine crank to get the car to start faster.

Thanks,
J

Well my engine cranked up after a few tries. I could not get it to rev it at all. I got to looking at all the tables for the boost tables and maps and it seems like they are all flat. I used the latest configuration files from their website. It seems like some people used their previous veersion and had no problems. On their website they say to calibrate the TPS with the engine running but when I calibrate it I get a message to make sure the engine is not running. Should I just ignore it? My mods as far as engine go are just an M2 intakeand a downpipe.

I used all the latest files from the AEMpower website.
0.85 gin and fin files.
My car ran fine for a pretty good time until I calibrated the TPS. It was off by about 10% on the low end.

The fuel map was a bit inconsistent on the low rpm low load areas. I smoothed it some and it idles pretty good (a bit higher now).

How did your car run before the AEM install? It's important you start at some sort of reference.

I had my 94 G-Force ECU in the car for debug (since I had cold start problems when I first installed it). Now, it starts fine (although it takes a few extra cranks) and idles great.

You can PM me your files and I can check it out.

Also, call the tech support at AEM. They were pretty helpful.

Ok. I gotta ressurect an old thread.

Are either of you still running the EMS (provided you even still visit this forum, of course)?

I'm having problems similar to Rated R1, in that I can't rev. But I also had start problems. Idle wouldn't catch at all until I added some "Start Extra". Now that it does idle, it's well rich (11.5) and when I lean it out any, it dies on me.

Have either of you (or anyone else) got developed maps you'd be willing to post, or a discussion of the sequence you used to tune the maps?

You can adjust the closed throttle setting with the engine running, I believe they just don't want you trying to adjust the wide open throttle with the engine running! Do you have a wideband on the car, what is your afr when you get to the point where it quits trying to rev?

The leanest I can get the idle to without it dying is about 11.5 AFR. The second I leave the idle area of the map it dies, after leaning to about 13.

My PowerFC idles at 13 just fine. This is very strange. AJatx suggested dropping back to version 0.89. I'm gonna give that a shot next weekend and see what happens.

Interesting, make sure the parameter Stat sync'd is staying on, I had a bad ref sensor on my car that acted similar to this. It worked o.k. on the stock ecu, but was borderline, and the EMS didn't find the signal sufficient enough. With all the heat under the hood on these things, it didn't suprise me too much. I replaced it, and it was perfectly fine.

Interesting. I am still trying to decide which one to buy.

You were waiting on someone to tune yours, weren't you??

I am also at the point where I will be buying a programmable ECU and I have been set on getting the AEM for a while now, but with this thread I might be changing my mind! I've been told that the AEM, being that it's windows based, is easier and more user friendly but then again the Pfc has been tuned by more people and seems easier to get help if needed. I am to the point where I'm going to tune my car (have been waiting to put any performance parts on it) but I can't guess when it comes to tuning. Either I can get accutate information or else I will have to take it to KDRotary 275 miles away and get it tuned there which I don't really want to do. So does it come down to More options and a easier system or less options and a tested system? I wish they didn't cost so much because it would make my decision easier!

I just bought the PFC. I read on the AEM forum for awhile. Talked to Goblin ( thanks again Goblin ). And finally decided it would be easier to start w/ the PFC.

I have basic mods RB Cold Air Intake, K&N, DP, Free Flow Borla Cat, 3" cat back.
