Aem 101

This will be a work in progress for sure... Images & Video are to be expected sometime soon.

This thread is mostly dead, not all dead but mostly dead (shows my age)... I'm sure we'll get a lot of interest and newer installs this spring and summer. So our support base should open up a bit.

Unless I'm missing something... Your PDF, it stops at number 5. It's good information, and I'd like to see the 6-10 numbered items from the table of contents.

I have heard from many sources that the AEM units have a hard time picking up ignition signal.

I have been looking at the ViPEC V88 as a direct competitor to the AEM Unit2

Thoughts?

If thats the case, how would the cars even work? ..they wouldn't, the car wouldn't run at all.

That sounds odd. AEM from my experience do excellent quality products the only reason id say the AEM would ever get a bad reputation would be as its so complex.

From good sources at AEM, not for a while. it will probably be the last ECU to be switched to Series 2. Not enough series 1 boxes were sold to move up priority on the 1800ECU's. there is even a redesign in the series 2 boxes that might push that back even further. but if anyone really wanted to you can convert any series 2 PNP to work on a RX-7. I even know of people using the series 2 software on the 1800 boxes

No, I have tuned a few of them so far and have never had any problems. one problem that i have found is that the 1800's come with the wrong Ref/Sync edges selected. if i remember correctly they should be on falling instead of rising. then there is no need to offset the timing to get it to line up.

The ViPec is a very good ecu for the price. I don't think the RX-7 would benefit much from the added features of the V88 though.

you haven't been around their stuff that much then. No offense to AEM at all. but they have their fair share of problems.

Any idea when that will be? you said one of the last ECU, where are they at as a whole then?

just trying to figure out what I'm going to do.

I don't know exactly. You can look at the list of series one ECU and then look at the list of Two and judge that way. Why are you so interested in the series 2? they have really fixed a lot of early issues with the Series 1's. one of the main benefits of the 2 is the software. which you can use with series one ecu's. not everything works properly but you can still use it.(disclaimer: it is not designed or meant to work but it does so don't get mad if it you try and you have problems). there isn't really a major difference with the hardware. I wouldn't wait, just buy a series 1.

If you really wanted to you can adapt a different series 2 ecu to work with the FD. let me know if you are interested in this I may be able to help.

My understanding is that the *current* version of the firmware for the Series2 *does not* work correctly at this point with firing the trailing plug. I'm not too sure that would be a good idea at this point to adapt another series2 - and at what gain?

The S1 box really is pretty damn good.

Probably the folks at AEM? I do pester one employee over there from time to time and he/she has said that the firmware isn't ready yet. Boards are done but the firmware isn't read.

Just buy the first gen box... come back here and we'll help ya get it going.

One customer of mine picked his up, new, for a stupidly cheap price from an authorized dealer (on eBay). I've always liked working with these boxes.

Knowing the people I know at AEM I am sure we have the same contact. I have been through the EMS development side of the building a few times and they have some pretty sweet equipment.
