NC Best coils to run?

I just bought the adaptronic FD specific version. Sorry for the noob questions ahead.

If running stock coils, does it run off the stock igniter? If so, would it be best to use a HKS twinpower?

If running direct fire, AEM smart coils? or would it still go through the stock igniter and use AEM dumb coils.

Or would you guys suggest not running the AEM ones at all and use say MSD coils instead?

I'm very happy with my AEM "smart" coils. I've bypassed the stock igniter altogether. I don't think that the stock ignitor can handle the current of the "dumb" coils.

If you stay with the stock coils the stock igniter is used. I sold my twin power but don't see why this wouldn't work. I had one. It misfired when idling. I was tired of playing with 20 year old stock parts and so switched to the AEM. I haven't given it a second thought.

AEM Smart coils here as well.

It's important to remember that coils are only part of an ignitions equation. The system performs as a whole. Quality plugs and wires also contribute to a hot consistent spark.

I am running NGK Race plugs, and would recommend nothing else for a high power application.

I'm running stock trailing with a MSD GM dual post coil and a MSD 6al on leading only, 590hp at 28 psi no issues, now running E85 at 25psi with 10.2afr with no issues.

And yes I need to pull fuel off the E85 map, to rich.

I found a great deal on some AC Delco LS coils, same used on a 2013 ZR1. So I decided to use those. I was told they have beastly output and dirt cheap,.. and yes they were only 140 dollars shipped for a set new from Rock Auto.

Made a boo boo. I meant they were 2nd Gen LS2/7 coils. Still good though.

we did some coil testing, the best thing you can do is to ditch the wastespark. doing that doubles the available charge time on the leadings, which means you can fully charge the coil all the way up to redline.

the best cheap set up seems to be FC trailing coils (just the coil, not the whole coil pack assembly) with a 4 channel ignitor of your choice.

the IG1A's are nice too, as are the Rx8 coils

yeah i thought the best part about Adaptronic PnP was that I could run 4 coils w/o having to use wasted spark

On mine, I'm running the LS2 / LS7 D585 coils. If I had known about the AEM ones at the time I probably would have put those on. These have been fine for me up to about 22 psi which is all I'm using. However, they also need good plugs.

Running stock plugs, for some reason I get a misfire at about 15 psi with these coils (and custom leads). Running the HKS race plugs (9 leading, 10 trailing) they're fine with the same coils / leads. The problem with the race plugs is that if you start it and just drive it on/off the trailer half a dozen times they foul up. For what I'm doing right now I don't need a lot of power so I'm on factory plugs again (7/9 surface discharge).

+1 on this.

NGK race plugs will fire under water at the Exxon oil spill. I ran stock 9's on all 4 spots at around 400whp. Above that, I moved to the NGK R6725 10.5's. They are fine around town, and have had no issues as a "street" plug. Yes, they are pricey, but they are top notch capability. I have seen 500whp with these plugs on stock coils and an HKS Twin Power.

I haven't bought my adaptronic ECU yet, but am in the process of making a new front loom. I have IGN-1A coils that I do not want to run in waste spark. I know what the wiring requirement coil side is, just wondering how they terminate into the ecu.

Thanks

if you don't use electronic omp and move to single turbo I would go with 440 universal comes with universal wire harness and its cheaper

Shamefully I'm using the OMP & sequential twins. I'm quite happy making wiring harnesses, though. Just need to know what I need to make!

Check with C.ludwig or www.lms-efi.com

He can make you a custom harness for the ign-1a coils. I got mine from him

Thanks, but I already have the plugs, relay & fuse etc. for the coil harness. Just need to know if I can connect these to the rx7 specific adaptronic ECU and not in a wastespark configuration.

Anyone have any tech specs on the D585 coils?
I've called AC Delco and delphi to try to get some data but no luck yet. All I found were scattered bits on forums mentioning 120mJ at 5ms dwell but not much else...

AEM lists the specs of the smart coils and I was curious how the D585 coils compare

This coil has been available since, at least, the mid-90s. AEM rebadges it and suddenly everyone thinks they invented the damn thing.

The only spec you need to know on the D585 is that they are known to randomly auto-disharge as a current over protection "feature". When big name Chevy tuners won't touch them anymore, everyone else would be wise to follow. Yellowbullet.com and the efi101 forums have some good reads on the issue.
