VA Adaptronic no triggering Relay

I have wired up an electric fan to a 30/40 amp relay. The issue is it is not triggering the relay. I have the adaptronic connected to the 86 terminal on the relay. If I unplug the wire coming from the adaptronic to the relay and then connect it it will trigger the relay and the fan comes on. This may be because when I unplug it the voltage increases to 10-12 v. However if it is connected it doesn't get triggered and its sitting at 4v when Aux 6 gets triggered due to water temp setup.

I did test the relay with a 9 volt battery and it triggers fine that way. I am stumped here. I haven't ever really hooked these up before. Anyways any assistance would be appreciated.

So I am being a little cautious since I wouldn't want to mess up this ECU of course.

So this is my current configuration.

87 Fan +
86 Adaptronic AUX 6
85 Ground
30 battery

I thinking of trying this when I get home. Maybe I was wrong in thinking the adaptronic would provide the voltage to switch the relay.

87 Fan +
86 Adaptronic
30 Battery

85 IGN Power

I think this would work maybe. Maybe let the Adaptronic provides the ground when it is switched with water temp.

The Adaptronic is going to control the relay by switching ground so the other side needs to be 12v switched on the trigger wire.

Thanks for reply. That is what I was thinking. I will try this tonight.

This setup worked great with the aux 6 settings.

87 Fan +
30 Battery 12V
86 Adaptronic (ground)
85 IGN Power

The Dorman 62-118 fan I used worked awesome as well. I gotta figure out what temperatures to turn it on and off at now. I figured why go to junkyard when you can get this for $75. This is a replacement the old ford thunderbird and mercury cougar fans. It had great ratings on Amazon as well and lots of talk about using this for hot rods.

ECU AUX 6 port fried maybe

My car left me stranded the other day. My wife is really wondering why I put with it lol. The car would not start after dying at a stop light. I tried to restart it and nothing. I didn't bring my laptop with me this time either. So I push the car to the side and put a shirt in the window and walked to my class since it was right out the corner. I figured maybe it died when the fan cut on or something maybe and maybe a fuel starting issue. So I leave school and walk to car and crank it right up. I decide to throw the fan on with switch and drive home. I have not driven it much since installing the electric fan. After some troubleshooting I notice the fan is not coming on when it is suppose to to. After more troubleshooting I see the relay and see the connector is melted some. Ugggh! So I put in another relay and it s still not working. So I test the relay and when I ground out the wire that goes to the adaptronic the fan cuts on like it should. So I guess I have fried the port on the ECU maybe as I checked the settings and messed with it some and nothing? I did take a quick look at the ECU and the connection seemed good still. I decided I will have to come back to this as I was tired of messing with it so I stopped for the day. I know I can ohm the wire out to make sure it is good or ground and have the fan come on from inside as well I guess. I am positive it is though. So I guess I have fried the port on the ECU? I take one step forward and two steps back on this car it seems. I am not sure why the relay melted there or if it was just bad possibly. I did research and seen people have it happen as well and sometimes just changing the relay corrects everything. I have read that a bad connection might cause it as well. So now I guess I can use a different port other then AUX 6 to correct it, but a little hesitant as I am not sure why the issue was caused in the 1st place.

Almost thought of wiring it to run whenever the car is turned on as well. I know some will say this is bad. I have read that some set it up this way as well without issues. It would be nice to use the adaptronic for it since I have it all in place though. I do not want to fry my ECU though. I haven't tested the ECU port yet, but will definitely do that. I am just pretty sure that is the issue though.

Any suggestions?

The crispy wiring means too much amperage for that wire. Likely the fan was drawing too much amperage, and lucky it did not catch on fire.
This should be your 30 or 87 wire.
I had a friend wrongly install a relay, and it melted the wires completely and the surrounding wires. He unplugged them before anything serious happened, but we had to rewire and patch a lot of stuff.

Since you know you have a working relay, you can invert the aux 6 signal to see if the relay clicks to make sure that aux 6 is still working. Inverting means the ECU will trigger during the opposite conditions. i.e. fans should turn on even when car is cold or not turned on.

Yeah gotcha. I did try to invert the signal to see if that was it. I haven't messed with it since. I hope I didn't fry that port or whatever, but just not sure. Car is getting to be a headache... lol

Just an update. I have put in an 80 Amp relay on this now and wired this into Aux 8 i believe which was the shift light indicator. Everything working as it should now. I guess I fried the other port.
