Question Show of hands: Who else has a non-running FD?

Okay, so my car has been non-running for something like....one year three months 23 days 9 hours....or so.
EVERY ******* day I walk by it sitting in the garage....up on jack stands....the engine sitting out on the work bench, forlorn. There have been so many times I had the bucks to send it off and get it rebuilt, only to have the funds vanish for one reason or another.
Now....one part of me says, "Chill out....the main thing is you have the car, there really is no hurry to get it running...be cool.", while the other side is like, "DAMMIT! I am TIRED of not being able to drive you!!!"
I try to rationalize things like, "Well...look at it this way: I'm not putting miles on it...." or "just THINK of the number of tickets I have probably avoided...." and so on so forth.
Couple all this with the fact that I am basically an impatient person. This....is teaching me humility and patience and a host of other things I don't normally deal with real well.
I am reminded by two of my friends that say I have experienced nothing yet, one guy had a '69 'Vette that he did a complete frame-off restoration, it was out of commission for over 4 years, another friend had a '64 XKE that cracked a head in 1972 and he didn't get it fixed until 2000. EIGHTEEN YEARS! I guess my lot isn't so rough compared to that....sigh.

So anyway, who else is waiting to get their car going?

Mine was out for a good 6 months while I was rebuilding it. I got a thread in the forum somewhere about the rebuild. Anyway, got it running great. Put on about 1500 miles, and then spun my front main bearing. Very frustrating. I finally got most of the replacement parts for that, and I'll be putting the engine back together this weekend. It'll still be another few weeks until I get it back in the car though (and then another few weeks while I break the new bearings in). Oh well, such is life.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a 1971 'Cuda sitting in my garage. It needs a complete frame-off. Currently, the motor is on a stand next to the frame, and the body is in my dads garage waiting for me to get around to working on it. It's been sitting in that condition for over a year. At the current rate I'm going, I estimate another 36years... Maybe it can be my retirement project.

BTW - I can't believe you actually have a F&TF poster hanging up on your wall... that's just sad

Mine's been apart since November. It ran for roughly a year with the LS1 in it before I decided to "upgrade". I've had trouble settling on a setup I like (being fickle sucks), so I've suffered delay after delay.

I thought engine conversions were supposed to eliminate the downtime.

I remember that thread, I thought it coincidental that you mentioned the SwainTech ceramic coating. There was an article in the new EUROPEAN CAR magazine about this...pretty cool. YOUR project is coming along nicely....looks really good.

Mine has been out since for about 13 months. I am in school in Oklahoma so I can't do nothin about it now, and I need to save up to fix it. Trying to decide if I should try and do the rebuid myself or take it to Pineapple. I have had the car since January 2003 and have had about, oh I don't know, 9 months due to an engine fire a week and a half after purchase. This car is the epitemy of a love/hate relationship.

Mine's been out of service for approx. 18 mos. That sad part is that nothing's really wrong with other than a clutch that's slipping. We had a baby that I took to daycare in the mornings and a baby seat just wouldn't fit! Now it's been sitting in the garage and I need to drain the gas and replace before I do anything.

Thanks!

I was hoping to be done before this May, but it just didn't happen. Unfortunately, that means I'll miss most of the track season this year. I'm hoping everything will be back together, sorted, and broken in by fall so I can hit the last few events.

Yeah mine is a seemingly minor problem as well (burns a crap load of oil), but I have no idea whats wrong other then my oil seals being shot and therefore requiring a rebuild.

I'm still down ... tranny swap had me down in November... had the car up in January and right back down that same day for a blown apex seal. (Damn fuel filter)... the clock is still running on the rebuild... no idea when I'll finally be out of my Nissan's and back in my beloved Mazda.

I'm putting mine down due to a 62-1 transplant.

Does that count?

Back to the olde TII and the wonderful HT-18 turbo.

Mine's been down for almost 2 months. Went to replace the thermostat, broke some bolts, drilled them out except for one which broke off inside. Had to get a complete t-stat housing and replace. Replacing some hoses and sensors while everything is out. Currently putting it all back together.

Yep, front cover o-ring.

I thought I'd be slick and use a larger diameter O-ring instead than the normal O-ring w/ white teflon spacer. Apparently, that didn't work. I lost oil pressure at apprx 5k RPM, and a couple pounds of boost. When I tore the engine down, I found that the O-ring squeezed out under pressure. Ooops. Oh well, it was completely my fault, and I'm not trying to say other wise.

Fortunately, I wasn't really pushing the engine that hard, or there would have been significant damage. As it was, I replaced both main bearings (the front was utterly destroyed, and the back had some scrapes). 12 new side seals, 6 new apex seals. I probably could have reused some of these, but I'd rather do it the "right" way. I also replaced the e-shaft, and most of the small stuff on the front of the e-shaft (thrust bearings, thrust plates, washers, spacer, etc). Oh yeah, and I also replaced the O-ring and teflon spacer. I believe the total price of my "mistake" came to about $600. Not too bad, but enough of a slap in the face to learn my lesson.
