Your FD Condition
I'm always wondering why, once I fix something, something else comes up. So, i'm here just letting off some steam. I also want to know, what kind of problems are other drivers facing with their cars. For example:
I was driving to work last Tuesday, and I had duty, so it was very early in the morning, approximately 6:30AM. I'm driving up the Coronado bridge here in San Diego, and my clutch finally gives out on me. So to make a long story short. **** broke. Shop replaced my clutch with a Exedy Hyper Single (purchased from Jason at Rx7store), a 10k mile rebuilt tranny (from Rich's (Goodfellasfd3s)father, new slave, new tb, new pb & seal, and of course some new royal purple tranny oil. NOW, I have an oil leak, since I didn't do so well at sealing my new oil pan (Pineapple Racing Oil Pan). I also have a minor vacuum leak(off idles once in a while but still boost fine, but sometimes feels like it's lagging). I'll be getting all of that fixed in February, and it's goung to cost me 5.1 hours of labor for the pan, and freaking another $600 not including the viton hoses for the hose job (I know I should have done this sooner, I had it coming). I just feel like venting, and I know there are other FD owners out there, that may not have the same exact problems as I do, but would love to vent.

Yeah, I know what you mean.
There are a handful of minor but not significant things I intend to fix on mine, but I tend to wait until I have convinced myself of the cheapest and or best way to fix it. Or I'm just being patient to find a cheaper used part. Since I don't drive my car all the time, I sometimes sit down and look around and see a whole bunch of little meaningless things that need fixed, and it's a little depressing.

I understand that whole depressing thing. I have a list of parts I want to get also, but what kills it is this damn classified on the forum. I always end up buying some small thing I feel I might need later. I add up all the money I spent on those little things, and I could have got one or two of the things on my list. HAHA!

i don't even know where to start with my FD's problems. the biggest thing is the rebuild i'm facing, it's got a bad coolant seal. i'm in the process of pulling the engine (waiting for my roommate to finish his DSM and get it out of my garage so i have more room). the primary turbo has a little shaft play (dunno about the secondary yet). the speedo and tach don't work. the car has 4 different types of tires on it (previous owner's doing). and that's just the obvious stuff. the previous owner beat the crap out of the car, so i'm doing a ton of work to get it back to where it should be.
I'm in the process of rebuilding my motor right now. This motor only had 2400 miles on it from getting a streetport and full rebuild. I don'y know how but my main rear stationary gear bearing got destroyed. I never even got it tuned yet. So I'm pissed as all hell. I learned one thing , no one will ever touch my motor again. It it ***** up then I know it was something I did.

Ummm... yeah, other than the guy who posted above you, it looks like a lot of work for you.

I am extremely grateful my Rx-7 is in almost mint condition. A friend of mine has an R1 and man does it have a lot of problems. Not huge problems, but a lot of little problems that would probably drive me bonkers like broken interior/exterior door handles, switches, and erratic idle. Best wishes to you guys.
First my motor blew so got a street port. Then i had to replace my cat. 2 months after that i had a starting problem. I replaced the thermal sensor thinking it would help (mechanique ran a few tests and said that was the problem). Once i did that, the car started for a few days then went back to naving problems. I now have to replace my NOK sensor and the Crank sensor. These cars are begging for trouble.
the two golden rules of happy FD motoring:
- simplify as much as possible
- get plenty of fuel
chuck all the emissions crap, go full non-sequential or single, upgrade very single component on the fuel system
if you do these things, and don't go crazy with the boost, these cars can be fairly reliable

Reading the first post makes me realize all the money Ive saved by doing my own work and getting my friend to help.
Currently my car needs the odometer fixed and the climate control stuff decided to just go crazy a while back. Also need to put in the bigger fuel pump and figure out why my water temp readings are funny. Also need to finish tuning.

luckily, i don't have a whole lot of trouble with my car either. But if you have a hobby shop on the base, which you should, just get a few guys together that know how to do it and fix it, saves a heck of a lot of money. especially when there's always something new.
Heh, mine is pretty close to this right now. Not quite a shell but I have most of the interior out and about half the engine bay stripped. I'm having to replace the big ring wiring harness, engine harness and a smaller harness by the ECU. While it's up on stands I'm replacing the rear wheel bearings & studs.. might do the pillow bushings while I'm at it but that's still up in the air. I guess it was a good deal, but man it's taking way longer than I expected. As soon as I get ahold of an engine harness & ECU I can move forward on it.

Yet another screen name for you? Did you get banned again YZF-R1, errrr......KX500FD, or whatever you're calling yourself now. Can't you just get along? :-) LOL.
I just finished going through a rebuild with mine. Now I need to do all new pillow bushing because mine are shot & I too have many little things that I have to fix up. I got the car about a year ago & the previous owner really didn't take good car of it! I am just fixing it as I get the money. Just 1 step at a time. It is expensive, but I really love this car. I am hoping that someday I will have it in mint condition and hopefully I will have good luck like some of these other guys!
O jeez, where do i start lol
I wanna start off by saying my FD is running at about 80%.
The car drives, drives normal but little stuff does annoy me.
For example, i have been meaning to change my suspension cause my ride is HARD. There is also some rattling noise, i have no f'in idea what it is but it sounds like something rattling that occurs from like 1800-2500rpm's. Sounds like theres a crack in the exhaust somewhere although my exhaust is like 2 years old and my downpipe is fairly new, unless theres a crack in the main cat? I have another one in my basement anyway so ill change that soon.
Also my idle is too high, stays at about 1500rpm all the time.
My horn doesnt work (i have a quick disconnect steering wheel) so i have to rig it to get it working again.
Then theres a couple cosmetic flaws that i wanna fix but this car is not my DD so i dont really care about them, i can do them little at a time.
Overall, the car put me through some pains with little **** going wrong. The engine/turbos actually are pretty strong, never gave me a problem (knock on wood), although the turbos are starting to smoke for 1-2 seconds upon startup after it sitting couple days. But some people say thats normal.
So im not gonna complain right now, it seems like alot of you are in worse conditions lol
