WTF! Ugh tranny bearing need help.

Hey guys its been a while since I've been on the boards, I've been hella busy and finally found time to replace my second gear synchro. I'm in a jam though the front main drive shaft bearing doesnt want to come out more than half way...I dont know whats wrong but it feels like its snagging on something.....I spaced the 4th gear synchro apart from the shown gear in the manual. It just wont @#$%ing budge! What am I missing here?

I don't think you're missing anything. It should pull steadily out. Could it be that your puller is causing the bearing to come off crooked and get wedged?

In any case, I'd replace that bearing for sure - any time you have to put significant load on the outer race of a bearing that's a press fit on the inner race - you probably damaged it.

I hope not....But the thing is I dont think it is coming off crooked its even on all sides....though I did take the large snap ring around it off......It didnt even get damaged it just came off nicely....and then I tried to pull it by the groooves inside of it.....maybe I need a diffrent puller?
I cant even comprehend how one makes a puller fit that tightly around the outside of a baring that it doesnt even budge...no matter hwo I tightened the puller around the baring, and no matter how tight I tightened the pipe clamp around the bottom of the puller, it would still move. Sigh....

Check out the way the Mazda pullers are set up in the FSM pics - they are physically clamped inward against the bearing. I used some pipe hanger brackets and threaded rod to make a similar clamp for my Autozone puller.

Also, make sure that the geometry of the puller jaws has the flat parts that contact the ring angled a little bit past 90 degrees.

I think that groove in the bearing is probably too small to get sufficient grip on it. Without the snap ring in place I don't see how to remove it.

The freeking tranny bearings are the biggest pain in the *** going. As Dave knows I am going through much the same sort of problem myself.

I got the mains out but ended up screwing up the ring on the rear countershaft and you can't replace just the ring so it's time for yet another new bearing. There is no way to get the bearing out with a puller without the ring.
