Unhappy WTF is the side scoop for? Brakes?

I cant believe I never really thought about the functionality of the side scoops. What do they do? I was just suprised I never really knew or thought to find out after someone asked me.

That vent allows air that passes over the oil cooler to exit from behind the fender.

It is actually functional.

There for the oil cooler(s) mounted in the nose of the car. The air goes threw the cooler, up over the wheel well, and out the vents.

Yeah, they are functional.....as is everything else I have seen on the FD......no silly "boy racer" fake stuff.....just pure, functional sports car stuff.

wait a minute... the vents on the side of the car are for the brakes. They pull hot air out of the wheel well.

The vents are for the oil coolers, not for the brakes.

If you remove the fender liner, you will see the plastic duct which leads from the oil cooler to the vent behind the front wheel.

How are the vents goint to pull air out of the wheel well if there is a plastic fender liner in front of them? I think you are thinking of the ducts on the front of the R2 lip that shoot air at the brakes. The vents are for the oil coolers hot air to pass over the fender (inside) and not blow at the brakes and add heat.

Thanks guys!

Hmmm...

I was wondering the same kind of questions...

Now that I thought about it, yea, they are probably for the oil coolers

The air to cool the brakes goes through a duct from the front intakes and onto the brakes and just out the wheels.

I'm not positive, but I think thats how it is.

Talking Sorting out the ducts

Donavan's right. Ducts in the nose - oil cooler inlet. Ducts in R1 lip - brake cooling inlet. Ducts on the fenders - Oil cooler outlet. So that should get all our ducts in a row!

Anybody wanna sell their R1 brake ducts? Not just the part behind the hub but the part that goes behind the lip too. I already have the lip (it fact people keep saying I have too much lip).

The ducting is integrated right INTO the fender liner. It is VERY functional.

Maybe I should take a pic of that fender liner I have out right now..

Here's website which has a diagram explaining the oil cooler duct/vent. It is in the middle of the page.

I stand corrected.... I was thinking of this picture (below) when I made the comment, but, obviously, I remebered the picture incorrectly.

Ok, since I only have one oil cooler (touring) has anyone come up with a way to use the passenger side duct for engine bay heat extraction? Those ducts look like they would create a very functional low pressure area to "suck" heat out!

Has anyone run duct (or shield facing up) from R1 lip into area ahead of oil coolers? Would this work to keep oil any cooler?

It also routes the air to help cool the brakes.

Ron, I would just consider getting a 2nd oil cooler. Upgrading and going with the Crooked Willow dual oil coolers might be a good option. Kind of expensive, but in this car, keeping the oil cool is never a bad thing.

To quote Mr. Stock several lines up

"The vents are for the oil coolers, not for the brakes."

This is exactly what I was going ot ask!!! Because of the fender lining, I always though the vents were show only. I would love to be able to evacuate hot engine compartment air.
