Question WTF is this???

I think it is a coil, maybe an amplifier. Either way I would like to install the HKS Twin power. I have found the wires that I need to splice in but I don't know if I should leave this in or take it out. It also has two plug wires going to it. That is why I think it is a coil.

Looks like some kind of aftermarket or replacement coil. Where do the wires with the blue boots on them lead? Directly to the plugs?

Yes, although I would have to take a better look to tell you which plugs they went to.

What do the stock coils look like? And what is the device behind this? I have seen the same one on another 3rd Gen. Could that be the stock coil or amp???

They go to the leading plugs only. The trailing plugs go off to another coil/amp mounted under the brake booster.

Stock coils look like this:

When I took stuff apart to do the rats nest hose job, I saw that the trailing plug on my front rotor wasn't hooked up.

I guess the end all question is, Do I need to take this out when I hook up the HKS Twin Power or hook the twin power inline with it?

It looks like someone attempted to fix a bad ignitor by replacing it with something else (the ignitor is quite expensive, last time I checked it was more than 500 dollars).

Lowe Performance is a rotary shop in I think the SE US. Mike Lowe did some tech articles for Mazspeed a whiles back, let me see if I can find their website.

Website (www.loweperformance.com) is down, but Mazspeed lists a phone number of (941) 924-8597. Hope this helps.

Well, Ignition has always been on my "to do" list. I guess I will see what I am missing from stock parts and go back to those, then install the HKS TP. I have had high end break up with boost around a Bar for a while.

Ummmm.............If you take it out the car wouldn't run !! , you would definately need you leading coil (it IS from an FC) to run , the HKS TP is only an ignition amp. but the final spark has to come from the coil.

I understand now. I need to see if I have the stock parts around or buy an aftermarket coil. I know someone on this board will sell me the stock parts for a good price. Then hook up the HKS.

Thanks for the help

I agree with some of the other posters here...

It is an FC coil. This part is frequently used as an "upgrade" from the stock FD leading plugs coil. If it is properly connected and grounded, I see nothing wrong with keeping it.

The reason I put "upgrade" in quotes is because I am not sure how much of an upgraded it really is. There are plenty of cars making 400+ or more rwhp on the stock FD coil. I think the people that do this say that the FC coil has more windings than the FD coil. Therefore, you'd get a higher current delta when the coil fires (more spark!).

Maybe someone with more experience than me can comment on when this becomes a needed upgrade.
