Wrecked my Fd Today...Not Happy!!
I was driving my car today on a four lane road with a huge median dividing the two ways of traffic. I was minding my own business going about 70. The speed limit is 55 but you must understand that this road(Custer for you Dallas guys) is long and straight and did I mention long and straight to put it into perspective you can safely hit 165 on this road and never touch the brake and slow down to a complete stop before the light thats how awesome this road is. But back to the story.
I was being paced so to speak by what I believe was a blue dodge dakota on my right so I was in the left lane. There was a van in his lane and it was a few hundred yards ahead of the both of us. He sped up to get in front of me but when he hit the gas the van hit its break and we caught up very very quickly. So in his panic state of swerving over into my lane I had to hit my brake in order not to hit him and make things worse. Well when I hit my brake it caused the car to get real loose and it was fishtailing down this road at 70 mph and so in the state of trying to correct it the car then got to far out of control and I knew I had lost the battle.
The car jumped the curb spun two or three times in the median and then dropped off the curb on the other side of the road and spun once again. By this time I was into oncoming traffic but thanks to the grace of God no one was coming on the other side and I got out of it with only damage to my car and not myself or anyone else. Which I thank God for. Needless to say the guy in the dakota didnt turn around or even stop to see if I was ok. Thats the part that makes me the most angry.
The fact that people dont stop when they cause an accident is irritating and I dont understand it at all. After all it is just a car and I love that car but when you do what this guy did you mess with someones life. I dont understand it at all.
The only damage to the car seems to be two busted up rims which I can replace and I need to see what else seems to be wrong. Just thought I would let yall know this story so be careful and I hope it doesnt happen to anyone of you all. Its a scary feeling spinning like that and knowing that you have no control over the vehicle that you love so much its very very nerve racking.

Glad you DIDN"T wreck your car, and that you are OK. You should take a course in high performance driving. It will help you to keep the car under control in emergency situations like this one. From your description, you should have been able to keep the car under control.
Once again, I'm glad you and your car are OK

Im going to do that thanks for the tip but now I need to save up to fix the car first and really learn how to drive it all over again. Do you know of any or how to get in touch with any of them that would be helpful.

You may have suffered some suspension damage and I would certainly check out EVERYTHING underneath the car. Better safe than sorry.
Sorry to hear about your accident. I suggest you start auto-crossing in order to learn how to control your car better. I finally started auto-crossing this year and I can control the car quite a bit better now.
Good luck!

Glad to hear you made it out unscathed.... Cars can always be fix/replaced, but people are irreplaceable, right????
One thing:
I'm confused on how hitting your brakes caused you to fishtail
Our third gens were blessed with some of the best brakes of ANY production car, bar none. And add to that an effective ABS system, so.....
How is it that hitting the brakes in a straight line caused the car to get real loose?????
Please don't think I'm tring to pour salt in an open wound.... I'm glad your alive to share your experience, but..... There had to be some sort of swerving going on to cause the car to get loose.

Thank God your OK and hopefully you will be able to fix the FD.
This may sound CRAZY to all of you but I have a similar story.
While ago I was Racing an accord and at around 120 MPH in a parkway I was cut of by huge 70's cadilac, and had no other choice but to hit the brakes either hit him or the divider that splits north and south bound so I spun few times trying to avoid an accident ended up hitting the divider with the front and back of the car luckyly didn't touch anyone else and just gained control and continued back on the road.
The damage to my car was litle over 15 hundred bux, (front bumper fugged-up, front left light smashed and rear bumper scratched badly), and the most important no one got hurt or involved in my supidity.
Big leason for me to learn.

I dont think ive ever heard of an accident in which the person who's fault it is bothered to stay and take responsibility if they were able to drive away. It's about as likely as someone leaving a note on your car if they hit it in a parking lot. Thats a fairy tale

Glad you are ok man. The ****** could have at least checked to see you weren't hanging out of the car bleeding to death, probably scared that he would be fucked by insurance . When you stepped on your brakes did the ABS kick in? I know it won't save you everytime and some people don't like it so they take the fuse out but I like mine because it's saved me a couple of times already.

I have spun out a couple of times the worst was I was coming out of a turn doing about 130mph. I hit the brakes to slow down for the next one, but I hit the brakes to hard. So, the back end started bouncing. It is a scary time when the car spins out at that speed. By the way I was on a track at that time.
Glad to hear that you are ok though. And you got luck with no other traffic coming on the other side.

The SCCA (sports car club of america) has local clubs all across the nation. They put on local driving schools, autocrosses, and other competitions that are fun and will help you to learn to drive your car better. I'm sure you could find some info on-line about where they are in your area. It will definitely help, and it can be great fun at the same time.

glad to hear you are OK, but sorry to hear about your car.
Where on Custer did this happen?
I had a similar experience, and warped 2 rims, twisted a toe link, and bent the sway bar mounts. All very easy fixes, just make sure you check everything VERY carefully.
Good luck, and be careful!

Sparky glad you are ok and that it can be fix.
To echo with Busy13b, where your tires shot or you hit a puddle of water, dirt, gravel, oil.......?????
Front pads worn out??? No ABS????
I have slammed my brakes at a higher speed but have not experience that kind of behavior.

If you read all these replies of others who have spun it (just like myself) you notice that no one has rolled one. Thank God for the low center of gravity and racing suspension. I got a neat clip on my computer of a Evo VII rolling out of a turn. Dont think that would ever happen with a 7.

It is good to hear that your okay. That sucks for the driver of the Dakota to drive away in a situation like that. The fact that some people can do this disturbs me Take care and good luck.

Glad you are okay and the car is not hurt worse than it is but......
I have to echo some of the other sentiments here....I mean, squirrely braking from only 70 mph?
The car will brake from 70 to zero in about 130 feet....with no drama whatsoever.
I routinely amaze/frighten passengers with displays of braking prowess, the car's brakes are just PHENOMENAL! So I would wonder if you have a brake or tire issue.(?)
Anyway, cool that no more harm was done.

I'm just a little confused ....
Only time a car got squirly that I was in was when the driver braked heavily from 120mph in an eclipse without ABS. Bouncing off the walls and hitting another car wasn't fun either.
