Some people own an FD because they love sport cars and that's what they can afford. My reason for being an FD owner is due to love. I have my dream car.
A few years back, my buddy egged me to test drive a turbo Porsche and the result was that I was unimpressed. Not that there was anything wrong with the car, it just didn't do it for me like the FD. My friend thought it was going to steer me away from FD's when in fact it solidified my love for these cars.
Now, I don’t care about brand names nor what impressed people on the road. It’s true a Porsche is still a Porsche at the end of the day, but it is only important if you care about that stuff. So in other words, I would sell a 911 in order to get an FD.
DougNOS,
IMO before you even sell your car you should test drive an FD. Who knows maybe you won’t like them or you may find that you must have one for yourself.

The fd is a 20 year old classic and still looks good, the 996 is just old. Unless you have a 993 or 997gt3(rs)/gt2rs I would get an fd ;-). It's a driver's car and you will love it and hate it, but every time I hit boost(on my gt35r single) I'm happier than I kid in a candystore ;-)

buy a "starter" car
Doug, since you are a mechanic, I'd recommend buying a less expensive FD and then learning about it and doing the repairs yourself, that way you'll know about what goes wrong with them and can work through whatever needs to be fixed. These are on the low end of the price range, but I know a local guys that got FD's for $3500 (automatic with horrible paint), $4500 and $5200. 2 out of the 3 were sitting in back yards for some time, but both of them started up were driven to their new homes. I do most all of my own wrenching and had a philosphy for a long time that if I liked a car I'd buy one cheap that needed work so I would get an idea of how to fix it myself, then if I liked it enough I already knew what to look for when buying a nicer one if I felt I wanted to get a nicer one if I hadn't fixed everything already.

if you've got 2 911's i say sell one and get your dream car. honestly i wouldn't care what anyone thinks. if you sell one of your 911's you'd get plenty of money to buy a nice FD and be able to build it how you want...or at least start.
i never really thought too much about the porsches until awhile back when reading on speedhunters.com. rauh-welt makes a beautiful car. i love they way they look and would love to be able to build one like that. not only for the great look but, the functionality and if you actually track the car that's even better. you'll be able to take full advantage of every mod you do and feel the difference they make.
DO IT!
