Would you sell your 911 for FD RX-7
 
So here's a little background. I have always been infatuated with FD's. When I was 15 I had saved up money for a car, my dad was going to match what ever I had saved to help me get my first car. I grew up in a huge car family and there isn't really a word to describe me as far as how much of a car nut as I am. So since my dad had a good knowledge of cars he wasn't dumb when it came down to helping his soon to be 16 year old son buy a car. At the time FD's were hard to come by for cheap so when I found one close to home that was decently priced for me at the time, I jumped at the opportunity. I had done tons of research before hand which i think was necessary for any soon to be rotary/RX-7 owner. I got there and it was as beautiful as it was described in the paper, yep that's right before craigslist, etc.. So i loved it and couldn't drive it yet "legally", but the owner said just stay in the neighborhood. I wanted it so bad. it was my dream car and I had the opportunity to buy my first. So now it came down to the business. Before hand I knew that it had already been rebuilt professionally and that he had the paper work and blah blah blah. I explained everything to my dad(that the owner had owned several rx-7 before and he had rebuild paperwork)and he actually understood me for once. He was cool with it and he said as long as you willing to work on it if it breaks. So now it was ok with Pops and we were getting ready to finalize the papers. Keep in mind this was this guys third one that he had at the time. Not the third one he ever owned, I mean he had three FDs when I pulled up. Two in the garage and the one I was looking at buying. We wrote up a bill of sale and as he had stated before that he had paper work from the rebuild, my dad asked to see it. He said sure no problem. He went upstairs while we waited at his dinner table ready to sign documents and handover a check. long story short he never could produced the papers. I was crushed! that was the only one remotely close to my price range and everything else was at least 5000 grand more. now 12 years later and I still want one. I don't know what it is but I still want one so badly. I am a certified Porsche tech and I have 2 911s. Also I have a 96 S14 with an RB25 that is my track/drift car. For some reason or another I have never gotten my hands on one(FD). Call me crazy but I would sell my 99 996 that has a bored 3.6l build by yours truly, for an FD in a heartbeat. Basically want I am asking is, am I crazy for wanting my dream car even if that means getting rid of my 911

You should have paragraphed that post BTW haha. Id say your not crazy wanting a FD, their great cars and upkeep is quite cheaper than a porsche. Id only keep a porsche if it was a GT3 or a 993 or basically any air cooled 911. You being a porsche enthusiast id think you had more done to it then that. I actually love porsches and id probably buy one, but so expensive to get work done. Everytime I see my friends I love them.

If it was a turbo or even a normally aspirated 993 I would keep it. 996 Turbo has a super high performance ceiling with mods and a 993 is the best looking 911 ever made and has a great collectibility factor being the last of the air cooled.

As for the FD, it is one of he best looking cars ever made and it has the huge performance ceiling! It is also much, much more rare than a 996.

I say sell the 996 :)

My dad has had a Carrera cab since he bought it new in 1983. When I was a kid i always drooled over the thing, but he NEVER let me drive it. I'm older now and he actually let me borrow it for the 1st time this summer to do a cruise with the Porsche Club guys (it's a long story why I'm part of that club, but I WILL say the Laguna Seca days are cheap! ;)).

Here's three things I noticed about his (pristine, one owner, black on black 35k mile) 911 Carrera: My '93 Montego Blue Touring is quicker, more comfortable, and turns more heads.

The 996 is the bastard child of the 911 lineup (although I admire the x50 and gt2/3 variants). I would trade up to a 993/997.

I am going to start looking again. Its been a while since I read up on my rotary. I need to check it off on my "Dream Car list", but I cant figure out if i want to buy a really nice one or a roller and build it from the begining. I have built everything and anything but I have to figure out which one I want to do. BTW since my 911 has been bored and the Intermediate shaft has been bulked up, its a beast the only thing I have lost to was a M6 v10 some punk kid in Daddys car and I didnt lose by much I would say a car length. I impressed myself and I drive these things for a living.

A non turbo 996 is probably the only 911 I wouldn't trade my FD for.

You have multiple P-Cars, so I say yes. 911 is next on my list of cars to buy and add to my collection. Why have two 911s, when you can have an FD and a 911.

Buying a Porsche from someone such as you with your background would make me even more confident in the purchase. You should have no trouble selling it.

Definitely I would.

Prob a 993 though or a 996tt. But since those cars are worth way more than my fd, my post is senseless.

But yeah I would in a heartbeat.

Ive driven both NA and TT 996s. Sell that car with the quickness. If you are 45, single and really not into cars the NA 996s are a great car to have, otherwise not so much. Sell the NA and pick up a nice FD, I dont know the mileage on your car but Im sure with the engine work it would pull low $20s. You can get a lot of fd for low $20s or just buy a nice low mileage one to start from a great platform. If you decide against the FD, at least upgrade to a TT 996(probably my next car when the T-Rex is gone)

Some people own an FD because they love sport cars and that's what they can afford. My reason for being an FD owner is due to love. I have my dream car.

A few years back, my buddy egged me to test drive a turbo Porsche and the result was that I was unimpressed. Not that there was anything wrong with the car, it just didn't do it for me like the FD. My friend thought it was going to steer me away from FD's when in fact it solidified my love for these cars.

Now, I don’t care about brand names nor what impressed people on the road. It’s true a Porsche is still a Porsche at the end of the day, but it is only important if you care about that stuff. So in other words, I would sell a 911 in order to get an FD.

IMO before you even sell your car you should test drive an FD. Who knows maybe you won’t like them or you may find that you must have one for yourself.

Not sure what sort of power the 996 is making but a 3rd gen with just the basics is a 2750lb car that will easily make 300 rwhp.

I owned a 997 RS that dynoed around 369 and my 340 to 350 FD is 2 seconds faster on a 2 minute track.

I see the 996 as a GT car and basically that's about how the 997 drives as well. Much easier to drive than the FD but not nearly as fun.

IMO the FD is more in line with a 993 as far as raw sports cars go. For many it was too raw in stock form so if you want a true sports car IMO the FD is one of the best there is.

996T is actually quite fun. not sure about the one u own but be prepared... no matter how good mechanic you are the fd is much different. if u want to enjoy the ownership of the fd u need to find someone who knows how things are done in the fd.. how small things (i.e replacing ur exhaust from front to back can be catastrophic without the right tune)

so be prepared for headaches in other words.. something im sure u dont have with the porsche

if ur happy with ur car, dont replace it.
If u can afford the addition of the fd in ur garage go for it

and dont think that the fd can be a daily driven:)

I dont get it... why not just get another car and have the best of both worlds. If you have the funds to maintain and keep a 911. Shelling out another 15-20k for a FD should be chump change.

Over here the price of both cars are different to what they are in the US, so I cannot comment monetary side of things. But personally, I'd rather own a mildy modded FD than a 911.

For me the main problem with the FD (In comparison to a 911) is that the interior is really lacking a prestige feel ('90s cheap looking plastics). If you recover the dash/door trims etc in leather & respray the plastics properly you can resolve this issue, though :).
