Would you recommend a 93 TT RX-7?

I currently own a 94 Supra TT. I love the car, everything about it is perfection. But thats me. I have an option of buying a second Supra for my brother or a RX-7 93 TT. Would you recommend the car? Its in decent condition, some paint chips, has a hairline fracture on the spoilor, has a few mods with bcc and gauges. Interior is decent, but still not the best. It has 52k miles and its yellow. The guys asking 18k for it. I was thinking of purchasing the car but i'd like someones opinion. RX-7's seem pretty weak compared a Supra, atleast to me, and I've driven both. Changing spark plugs every 10k miles seems a pain, but the car is pretty easy to work on and i'm sure i can get my hands dirty modding it. Although it seems like the engine is just a grenade waiting to detonate. What do you guys think?

If you think changing the plugs on the car every 10K miles is a pain...don't get the car.

They need a lot of attention, and maintence.

They are not as reliable as a Supra...but can be made very, very fast. Don't kid yourself....

If it is a Yellow '93...I believe that it is an R1 if it is the stock paint..

Definately stock paint. What is an R1? and what are the different classes or versions of the 3rd Gen RX-7? I like to work cars, and I wouldnt mind getting into it if its worth it on the return. RX-7's seem like a nice quick car if you know what your doing.

R1 is the "racing" version of the RX7. It should have suede seats (for grip), dual oil coolers, more agressive suspension (shocks, springs, and sway bars), and it also should have a front lip spoiler, and rear spoiler.

I believe there were 3 classes of cars in '93. Touring (loaded up with moonroof and leather...etc), R1, and base models. Please correct me if I am wrong here guys....

As long as you are ready for the $$ and time associated with owning an RX7...they are great.

They handle like no other car, can be made lighting fast, and still get looks no matter where you go....

However, the car needs constant maintence, and it is not the kind of car you just take to the dealer every 3000 miles, and drive.

Patrick

The 93 yellow ones are called the CYM Competion Yellow Mica.
The CYMs were only imported in 93 and only 350 of them made it here.

Now in 93, we had 3 different trim levels. Mind you ALL of them came with the TT engine.

ALL of them came with power windows and door locks, and rear strut tower bar.

Base: Cloth interior, cassette radio
Touring: Leather, cruise control, rear wiper, Bose CD radio, sunroof

R1: Suade seats, cassette radio, dual oil coolers (as oppsed to 1 in the other models), front strut tower bar, stiffer suspension, front chin spoiler, rear wing.

I picked a touring simply because you can't add a sunroof to the other models, but you CAN add all the mechanicals to the touring.

The CYMs are pretty rare. Not as rare as some of the models brought out in 95, but rare because it's the only yellow FD that came to the US.

I can prolly argue that!

Any car can look good enough with enough money dumped into it.

well if you did'nt have a supra already, i'd say go for the supra, but since you do, no point in getting two same cars right?

Pretty much, i'm going to have to think about this. Theres 2 tuning shops in manassas that work on RX-7's, Peter Farrels or something. I'll prolly have the engine bay clean and new flex metal tubes run, get the apec ring redone, redo the motor, and let it be for a bit, then work on the rest. Prolly retouch the paint or redo the yellow entirely. Unfortunately i dont know too much about the RX-7 so im going to need to research that a bit. I am leaning towards a second supra though!

$18k for a 3rd gen? What's the seller smoking? I don't think CYM go for that much, even if it's low mi. It's way over priced unless the car is prestine.

IF!

For that price, get it only if it looks as good or better than this!

RX7s are worth it only if you put some money into them. They do not have the reliability of a Supra unless you do ALL of the reliability mods to them. Some things to do -

1) Take your car to KD Rotary in Nazareth (near Allentown), PA and not Peter Farrell - we've heard very many bad things about Peter Farrell - some of the guys in his shop are nice but Dave at KDR is more knowledgeable and professional than Peter.

2) stock engines (on an all stock FD) usually last around 60-80K miles and need replaced. When you replace the engine - streetport it, have oil and coolant porting done, silicone seals and o-rings in place of stock rubber seals - 2mm Hurley racing selas if you're going to run at higher boost (over 12 psi)

3) eliminate AST
4) put on dp
5) silicone hose replacement with tie-wraps
6) aftermarket radiator (FDs run very hot)
7) 180 degree thermostat
8) eccentric shaft plug mod
9) J&S knock sensor (protects against bad gas and detonation)

I might be missing a few but then your car will be as reliable as a Supra - changing your turbos over to non-sequential will save you headaches over the stock system and eliminate all of the vacuum hoses and solenoids.
My car is around as fast as a BPU+ or ++ Supra so they can be made fast and reliable - just something for you to think about.

With your mods you should be not just about as fast but FASTER than a BPU+ supra!

Ok, so how many cars are available for under $20k that have a stock top speed of about 160mph, can do 0-60 in 4.9s, can pull almost 1g and STILL look good doing it?

cym not even close

If its the car I think it is its a base with a ton of stereo mess in the back rolling on some cheap tantrum 17 x 7 or 7.5 wheels. It does
idle well and pulls 18lbs of vacuum and like flybye said its still a good bang for your buck. I got a 7 for sale (93 base in mint condition w/ about 11k in mods) pm me if interested.
